Is it time to extend Mooney?

Is it time to extend Mooney?

No

We need to at least see what recruits he gets for the next two seasons.

There are two signing periods, one that’s usually mid-November and another in mid-April. Of course you can get a “commitment” earlier than the signing periods.

most recruits seem to wait for the dust to settle after the last live period in July. they commit August to October and sign in November. a smaller number bet on themselves their senior year and wait.

I was hoping we could fill Verbinskis slot by the end of May, then get 2 commits for the five man class by the middle of September.

if we fill Verbinskis with a 2020, he could commit any time and sign in April, joining Wilson.
I agree we can and likely will land at least 2 in the 2021 class by mid September.

If we beat VCU tomorrow, attitudes will temporarily shift to the positive. If we lose, then the focus will be that Mooney beating VCU is an anomaly and the pressure will amp up once again.

No excuses to not beating VCU tomorrow.

It would be ludicrous not to fill the Verbinskis slot this Spring with a recruit for next year. We can't have a 6 man class the following year. I would hope Verbinskis slot would go to a high school big who would be the heir apparent to Golden. Also would take a transfer big that could sit next year and then immediately plug into Golden slot the following year.

Exactly. No doubt that is a void that we have.

I assume that's why we're recruiting Weir.

I was wondering if we were looking at anyone who had a good freshman year, that wanted to transfer and learn for a year. That could take until late May to finalize.

I was certainly not suggesting a 6 man freshman class...

have to wait for those guys to enter the portal. then of course we'll look. but rare that a big has a good freshman year and looks to transfer, and if he does that he doesn't attract really high interest.

Beat VCU on Saturday - extension by Monday morning.
Lose to VCU on Saturday - fire him before the post-game interview with Bob Black.

Ha well neither is happening but the 2nd one should be a LOT closer to reality. There is lot of pressure here and as I've said I just don't think we do a good job of accepting that, VCU on other hand u can feel their urgency and probably one reason they continue to bully us every year.

Just saw Mooney's presser by the way. It was a whole 4 minutes. Ho hum. O'connor asked if they talk about VCU being their best remaining chance at a high NET game and Mooney is like nope we don't do it. I really don't get it. Sure there is plenty left to go but this game has massive ncaa implications riding on it but its not even a consideration. Realistically lose this and we need to win Brooklyn. Urgency where are you.

Also Lane said something about VCU having our number more often than not the last FEW years...uh Lane try 15 years Mooney entire tenure. lol. Chance for Mooney to take some ownership there but I mean why do that it's working so well.

But it was 4 minutes. Blink and you missed it.

Go Spiders. Beat VCU. NCAA or bust.

I'm surprised Lane didn't ask something like "Coach, you've beaten VCU SIX TIMES. What is it about you that makes your teams have so much more success against them than others?"

You keep mentioning negative news about the Spiders. Tarrant also had a bad record against VCU and the VCU teams over the past 12 years have been much better than the teams from the 80s. With that said, all that matters is the preset and future and this is a terrific team.

It is obviously your objective to to turnoff other fans and make the coach and everyone associated with the program look as bad as possible. You keep repeating the same stuff over and over again.

I hope we win this game, but if we win or loss this is still a great team and they deserve better fans than you.

You keep repeating the same stuff over and over again and often make untrue claims. For example you said the fan base has given up on the Spiders, despite 3 sellouts in a row. You comment that the reason the game is sold out is because 40% of the people going are VCU fans, which is complete bs.

what a load of u know what. I've never said anything of the sort. Both of those are made up. I mean it should be easy to find except u won't find anything like that on board because I've never said it. Go find it and quote it or link it, I'll be waiting. Really says a lot about u to lie. I'm not pleased with Mooney so what. his numbers are what they are. My beef is consistently w performance of a 15 year coach making ~1.3 mil. U are the negative one on the players with your 10% chance to beat UD and not picking them to make NCAAs. U cant even see the difference. & trying to run off long term passionate fans who don't accept 9 straight years of no ncaa and 6-19 records vs. VCU. Got it.

There you go again! We are 18-6 with no seniors and all you do is post negative comments and complain about the program. You also like to dish it out, but you can't take criticism.

Sorry for those that read this, but it is time we stood up for our player, basketball program and coach.

Why does the last few posts seem like a better discussion for Sunday Morning?

We've already been over this. Yes, Tarrant had a bad record against VCU: 9-15. That is much better than 6-19. If Mooney can win 6 of the next 7 against the Rams (and I hope he does), he will pull even.
Tarrant went 2-9 against Barnett when he first took over the program. The recent vintage VCU teams have not been "much better" than those Barnett VCU teams of the early 80s. They went to the NCAA every year save one, and advanced every time they went. They were even a 2 seed the last year - I don't think VCU has been a 2 seed in the past 15 seasons.
Tarrant went 7-6 against Pollio and Sonny. Not great, but not a loser. I'm pretty sure Mooney has a losing record against Capel, Grant, Smart, Wade, and Rhoades.

But like you said, what matters is the present, and it's perfectly fine to be happy with this season without dragging DT into it. As pointed out elsewhere, it's not a great look to tell fans we're better off without them. More die-hard fans than I think you realize ascribe this attitude to our program, which only fuels their displeasure.

I'm rooting for the players to succeed and make NCAA as much as anyone, always have. U won't find negative comments by me on the players. U r welcome to any opinion of me - and even resort to personal attacks too - but don't do it by making stuff up. The below is 100% made up. Please show me where I said anything of the sort...

"For example you said the fan base has given up on the Spiders, despite 3 sellouts in a row. You comment that the reason the game is sold out is because 40% of the people going are VCU fans, which is complete bs."

I believe the team should make and deserves to make the NCAA, heck I've had that positive take longer than anyone. They have to do it with the ncaa and vcu baggage of Mooney, but that's high level sports.

Agree with your post - especially the below quoted line. I'm afraid it will take more years of no NCAA's and and even a worse long term record versus VCU for the Mooney lovers to jump off the train. The big question is how bad do the numbers need to get? I'm not sure there's a bottom.

Sorry for my rant.
VCU has been has been one of the "estimated" top 40 teams in the country since 2006 and won approximately 73% of their games. From 1985 thru 2002 they were very mediocre winning around 53%
VCU Years Coach Seasons Overall Record Conference Record
2017–present Mike Rhoades 1 43-23 (0.652) A-10: 25-11 (.694)
2015–2017 Will Wade 2 51–20 (.718) A-10: 28–8 (.778)
2009–2015 Shaka Smart 6 163–56 (.744) CAA/A-10: 74–30 (.712)
2006–2009 Anthony Grant 3 76–25 (.752) CAA: 45–9 (.833)
2002–2006 Jeff Capel 4 79–41 (.658) CAA: 50–22 (.694)
1998–2002 Mack McCarthy 4 66–55 (.545) CAA: 35–31 (.530)
1989–1998 Sonny Smith 9 136–127 (.517) Sun Belt/Metro/CAA: 59–65 (.476)
1985–1989 Mike Pollio 4 65–57 (.533) Sun Belt: 32–24 (.571)
1979–1985 J. D. Barnett 6 132–48 (.733) Sun Belt: 59–19 (.756)

And Tarrant had a winning record during their "very mediocre period."
They were a great team under Barnett, and we were just emerging from our dark ages.

Is your argument that CM shouldn’t be expected to win against VCU?

Another perspective, their NCAA seeds better than 11. I believe are:
81 5 seed
83 5 seed
84 6 seed
85 2 seed
13 5 seed
14 5 seed
15 7 seed
16 10 seed
17 10 seed
19 8 seed

OK so what is an acceptable record against vcu? We're at 24% now, is that OK, should it be 30%, 40%, 50%, or more?

No, it is going to be a very difficult game, but I think we win by 2 points.
Not what I’m asking. Your posts suggest that because DT didn’t have a winning record against the Rams that CM shouldn’t be expected to.

So are you saying that we shouldn’t expect CM to win at a decent rate against VCU?

I think Mooney is doing that by himself.

You shouldn't turn away fans. You should thank us that we're still here and want the best for our program, which means dumping Mooney.

Easy with the no seniors crap. GG, BF and NS are redshirt juniors. THey've been in a D-1 program the equivalent of a senior. That's experience that a regular junior doesn't have.
