Pending ABC approval, we will start selling beer at the Robins Center during men's basketball games this season. Never thought I'd see that happen!

This isn’t a fly by night decision, there has been a bunch of study into this by all accounts. Does it potentially change some of the audience dynamics? Possibly, but I’m guessing that the experience seen within hundreds of professional stadiums that serve beer provides an ample guide that this is a perfectly reasonable step.

I will say this, I have seen videos of fans at Lincoln Field and Yankee Stadium throwing beers at people, but I think these are staged in a studio - kind of like the moon landing. I will dump a beer on DistrictBaller if he comes to a game.

One more thought, if they can sell beer - does this discriminate against Fezz and vodka?

My question is, will the Baptists be manning the taps?

I'm waiting for FRS to say they will only be selling beer to 70 year olds who can prove birth in Virginia.

It's interesting...my wife shared this information on her Facebook page, and it garnered a lot of excitement from our peers. For a program that, frankly, hasn't had a whole lot for non-diehards to get excited about lately, this change has a lot of people talking (generally very positive with the younger fans).

This reminds me of the scene from Animal House when John Belushi (aka John Hardt) tells Flounder(aka Spider Fans) when facing adversity(aka Spider BB)"MY ADVICE TO YOU IS DRINK HEAVILY!!

I can tell you that they've done an amazing job selling tickets so far, especially considering the disappointment of last year. On pace (prior to the announcement) to match last year.
Guess that's not surprising since we have a lot of older fans who will come no matter what. wouldn't be shocked if this move actually upsets some of them though. Guess we'll see what happens. i'm not opposed to being able to buy beer, it's just suspicious that after all these years they take the plunge now, when it's clear to everyone that mooney's job is on the line and there's little chance of being very competitive again this year.

may just be related to the new AD

I was at a BC event up here in Boston with their AD (formerly assistant AD at Ohio State) and he talked about broaching that with the BC Jesuit leadership. He got it down at a catholic college. If they can do it, and nothing of note negative has happened (other than me spending more at games), then I don’t see why we can’t implement it successfully.

Happy that we’ve done it, and would assume it was the AD driving it.

It fits with the trend of moving our basketball games more to a fan-oriented experience in the last few years than just a basketball game. It has kept butts in the stands even with the performance of the team being ok.

Everyone is talking nationally about declining attendance at live sporting events, but we've been doing pretty well in the RC post-renovation. This is one thing our athletic department has been doing well.

We have done a great job with attendance for our basketball team.

In 2017, we had the 85th best attendance in the country

http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/Reports/attend/2017.pdf

We also had the third highest attendance last year in the A10

https://richmondspiders.com/news/20...all-surging-towards-attendance-milestone.aspx

VCU fans or whoever can joke about our fan support all they want, but the numbers tell me we have a very loyal and consistent fanbase. This was also with no beer and with not winning much. The attendance can only go higher now with beer sales and more importantly (hopefully) more winning.

Certainly "hope" that sales are limited to Richmond fans. Some fans from visiting schools are obnoxious enough already, particularly from one school that will remain unnamed. "They" do not need to have their obnoxiousness further fueled by alcohol.

I've already had to have security assist VCU folks out twice without beer.... I really don't want to make that worse.

Beer sales to spider club members only.....membership will explode.

We are on the same "wave length" about the sale of beer to the fans of that school you mentioned. Now, all I need from you, is a definition of "explode" in your post. Is that " the number of spider club members will increase exponentially?" or individual spider club members will consume so much beer that in order to remove the beer from one's system there will be an "explosion" of some sort. Of course I know you mean the first option but I could not resist. But by no means should beer be sold to the people you needed security to escort out.

best way to reasonably control sales isn't a fan friendly one. exorbitant pricing. $5 minimum for a draft in a plastic cup. you can enjoy one or 2 at the game if you want, but most won't blow $40 to down 8 of them.

Attending MLB games price does not appear to be a concern to many consumers............................

Am I the only one that thinks $5 is cheap? Maybe it’s livong in Boston too long, but at the Garden and Fenway, beers are a minimum of $10. For reference, at BC game, the minimum (and only, as they only offer bud and bud light) is $8.

And I don’t believe the pricing is high to discourage drinking. It’s more that they’re the only option to drink in the stadium (other than sneaking in booze), so they know they can charge that high and people will still pay. Supply and demand and all that Jazz.

They’re not starting to offer booze at Richmond games hoping that people don’t buy them because they think they’re too expensive...
