Gilly sets the All-Time steals record

Adding on to this, I would consider Kendall Anthony, Cedrick Lindsay, TJ, ShawnDre, Grant, Gilly, and soon Tyler as all time Spider greats and not a single NCAA tournament appearance between the bunch. So am I wrong and they actually all suck or is there some other factor at play?
Agree with the sentiment, but Lindsay went his freshman year. You can swap out him for Terry Allen.

No Spider has embarrassed themselves?

What else do you call blowing a 17 point lead on your home court to Miami in the NIT?

What else do you call not getting a rebound for 10 minutes?

Losing by 25 against Ohio? Blowing a lead in the A10 tourney against Charlotte because the coach and a player lost their minds in the waning seconds? Losing to Radford by 15? Losing to Hofstra?

Maybe those aren’t embarrassing enough?

How about losing 6 straight games to VCU? How about losing 6 straight games to VCU for a second time? How about going 6-21 against VCU during a coach’s tenure?

Embarrassing is the only word.
On the opposite end, name the big wins in the past decade for our program that have gotten us national press. A few off the top of my head. Wisconsin, a couple years ago. We beat a ranked Cal team back in 2015, I think that was pretty good but was largely cancelled out by that senior led team playing .500 ball the rest of the year. Maybe a win or two over VCU when they were ranked (but again Mooney's overall record vs. VCU is also there to more than cancel out those few big wins).

Our only truly great season of the past decade was 2019, which was of course the cancelled season, and even in that season, we were a bubble team and our fate was going to be decided in the A-10 tourney and we all know Mooney's record there.

We were solidly in the tourny that year per a member of the committee

Right you are! Typing too fast I guess but thanks for that addition. I mention it though because think of the "all time greats" of any other university, any of them, and how many will you find that never made an NCAA tourney or at least won a conference championship. Mind-boggling.

I agree they're greats. and despite no dancing, I've never once felt they embarrassed themselves. I'm proud they were Spiders.

as for Gilly, I agree that the way he plays defense doesn't make him an all-time great on-the-ball defender. but he's is absolutely an all-time great defender! his quickness, his hands, and mostly his instincts will make him the all-time steals leader. that's amazing. and those live-ball turnovers lead to very high percentage baskets which leads to wins.

he's an all-time great defender, an all-time great Spider, and by all accounts a great guy we can be proud of. get the steals record and then focus on the one thing that's missing. it'll be a shame if he and Grant don't get to dance, like it was for Kendall and TJ.

Gilly's steals have given the Spiders a lot more points than his cheating on defense has cost us.

His steal record is something all Spiders should celebrate just as Bob McCurdy leading the nation in scoring in the 1975-76 season. Rarified heights for our little liberal arts school.

Happy for him. Well deserved. A credit to the Spider Nation.

no Spider has embarrassed themselves. we've had 2 losing seasons in the decade. no, we haven't had glory. we all want the glory. but you're acting like you take that personally.
Going to disagree respectfully. 16-15 squad with TA/DT/TJC really underperformed and crapped the bed to close out that season. And last years team could arguably be out in that same category with its three Covid pauses and failure to make the tournament.

Would I call them “embarrassments”? Probably not, but I would call the output/performance embarrassing. And I don’t consider myself to be particularly bombastic.

How do you manage to finish 16-15 with TA, SDJ, and TJC in the lineup? Seriously?

That is wasting some real talent. It reminds me of the final Bill Dooley years when he went something like 8-20 in back to back years with Oliver, Cueto, Eric Pool, and Jarod Stephenson. The next year Belein took them to second round of the NCAA tournamen as a 14 seed after winning the CAA tournament.

How do you start a bunch of 5th and 6th year seniors and the most athletic junior we have ever had, and get out rebounded 44 to 20 and shoot 59% from the free throw line? What the hell do these kids do all day? Don’t give me that go to class and study crap either. They have taken every class UR has to offer and all graduated years ago. Poorly coached, lazy, hungover, what is it?

When I said something earlier about something "odd" happening, I never anticipated that something "odd" would be the officials "stealing the steal."

Wish Gilyard could have broken it tonight. Lot more attention on a Wednesday night for college hoops. It will get lost in the shuffle on a NFL Sunday. Even the RTD sent JOC to this game. No way he goes to Cedar Falls.

It was great being there in person - his family all showed up right before the game and had large cut out 3 - 8 - 6 and held up and such following the steal .. as importantly that he got the record, so happy for him that the still mattered in the game and he gets to celebrate on a flight home tonight with a victorius team. Best defensive effort by the team by far today this season - Dji, Zha, and wow Tyler's block.

Yeah - now going to figure out what is open for dinner in the glorious town of Waterloo, IA on a Sun night before driving back to Des Moines in the middle of the night for a crazy early flight back to the RVA

That block is worthy sportscenter top ten💯🕷

Only a four and half hour drive from KC. No wonder he only had one steal against Wofford and saved it up for the UNI game. ;)
I was wondering toward the end of the game about whether he was waiting to set the record back on the home court. He definitely wasn’t hunting for steals these last two games.

Congrats to Jacob and one big box left to check.

Congrats to Gilly, well deserved, a special player.

Same thought crossed my mind

There are tens of millions of college basketball fans. Very, very few can say they saw an all time NCAA record holder, in any stat, play for their team.

A special moment in Spider history that will be spoken of on this board for decades to come. A special moment for a special Spider player.

Most of us are unhappy with the state of Spider athletics, but we can all celebrate with Gilly on his special accomplishment...and their are many more steals to come in a young season.

Gilly also moved past TJ for 9th place on the all-time UR scoring list. (Of course, TJ did it in many fewer games.)
