Getting back to the main point, I am excited for him, the team, and the school, to hopefully break the record. I wish it was going to happen at home in front of our fans, but short of something unfortunate, that is unlikely.
I hope it gets him a mention on Sports Center and in the national media. Regardless of the circumstances, it will be a tremendous accomplishment.

Wow. You would think a moderator would be the last one to post something like this. No wonder all the constant attacking of posters by name is allowed on here, or should I say attacking of me is allowed. But, when I reply and call some people clueless, and not even by name, I get the reply from urfan1, while we hear nothing when I get attacked. LOL, fan1. Sorry, but I have plenty of Spider friends who are not like the 10 or so on this board. Even if you count 19-20 as a tournament year (very debatable), that's once in a decade. Is that the standard? Should we be celebrating that? And if not, why should anyone realistically expect anything to change in the next decade? Honest questions.

I'm not asking anyone to celebrate that. But, many on here are asking those of us who are more positive about the program to "come join the hate". Yeah, he leads the nation in steals every year, so that automatically get him on those teams. You think an NCAA committee who makes those selections is watching game tapes of every player and really analyzing there total defensive game. Heck no, they look at stats and highlight reals. And Gilly makes a heck of highlight real with his incredible steals.
If the NCAA committee looked at a complete defensive players, Tony Dobbins would have been on that list every year. That dude was a lock down defender, but he didn't have any gaudy defensive stats (which mainly are steals and blocks) so he got little national press for his abilities.
If you don't see some of Gilly's defensive flaws, I would say, you aren't watching our games very closely. And guess what, other A-10 coaches aren't either but what they remember when it comes to vote is Gilly making them silly with his steals at times during games.
Fan 1 is respected on this board. Everyone on this board that Fan1 is a great mod whose allegiance it to UR and our success in sports. He was here before you and will be here after you.

it's understandable that you feel that way, B. you and others certainly have the right to express that. some will post similar thoughts every day including the offseason, I assume hoping their voice combined with others will effect change. you're in the majority on this board. you'll get "likes" and others will echo the criticism. it's hard to even argue against. we all know the facts. most coaching losses. 10+ years without a bid. rebounding deficits. you believe a coaching change is the answer and you shouldn't get harrassed for saying what you believe.

it's not rocket science, when a sports team is not meeting any of the primary expectations of a winning program (NCAA bids, conference titles, beating your rival) you make a change. You don't roll out the same losing formula again and again and again and again and one more time for good measure. No other D1 schools that take athletics seriously would do this so why would the Mooney truthers think that they know better. Literal definition of insanity.
Well said. Sorry I get defensive of the mods. But they do a thankless job, they both are really good at it and I'm sure they have lots of opinions that they would share but because they are mods, they don't. When they do add something to the message board though, it should hold value by all because of there role as mods.
I've gotten a couple side eyes and messages from the mods before when they thought I stepped over the line (I did), but I listened and respected the authority we place in them as members of this board.
Bottom line, if they something to you, publicly or privately, listen up. It isn't personal, it is instructive, perhaps it should cause you to self reflect a bit. I don't think some people are capable of that though.

Regarding the comments in this thread, it seems obvious that both sides of the comments about Gilyard are 100% true.
Gilyard is fantastic at stealing the ball! Best all-time since the collection of stats. His steals and deflections are fun to watch, and he often makes good things happen with that part of his defensive effort. He deserves all accolades in this area in my opinion because he is the best at it. Seems all would be happy to have a Spider as an all-time great anything!
It is also true that Gilyard is frequently a defensive liability to his team. He is often out of position (because he is hunting the theft), and he is not a real good on-ball defender. Even his size (height) is regularly a defensive liability, most would say more often than an asset at the major college level.
So, is Gilyard great at generating steals and deflections, absolutely! Is he a great overall defensive player, purist would say no. Should he make all defensive teams, probably yes (and we know he will) because he is the greatest at one very public aspect of defense.

Adding on to this, I would consider Kendall Anthony, Cedrick Lindsay, TJ, ShawnDre, Grant, Gilly, and soon Tyler as all time Spider greats and not a single NCAA tournament appearance between the bunch. So am I wrong and they actually all suck or is there some other factor at play?
