Forecast for VCU

We would love to leave the A10, but it is not going to happen.

That's surprising to hear, VCU would get smashed in any higher conference just like they do in the first round of the NCAA tournament ever year.

At one time the A10 was a higher conference after the jump from the CAA. Not so much anymore. Onward and upward.

1. Good game experience in spite of loss
2. Tip of the cap to ticket office, they made the most of a bad setup and limited vcu attendance to an extent Ive not seen before. Still too many Ramfans
3. Vcu plan was to foul Grant every time he got within shooting distance. Very good plan, he couldn’t finish anything and had a dreadful night st the line
4. Unable to win when shooting 50% from 3 suggests that there is serious soul searching to do about our game-plan
5. Noah is at least a decent grad transfer unlike prior experiments
6. Jacob is the man
Nice summary T. I especially agree with point #2. The Ram fans in attendance seemed less boisterous than last year also, which is surprising because they won this year and lost last year. Maybe they didn't want to kick the Spiders while they are down (and help the save CM effort).

I think the Rams had a bit of a letdown game. They figured the Spiders were a pushover after beating them by 21 at home. Could have been ugly, but Noah saved the first half. The Spider D was "better" (relative term) although the layup line by VCU at the end of the first half was a killer. This of course was aided by the no call on the Vann "how many steps do I get" dunk, to which added pain was inflicted via the Mooney T. I don't blame him though, I would have been T'd up too. I really do not understand how the officiating at the RC always favors the visiting team. Whatever the coach and players say must be especially effective.

Embarrassing
Not really the team played hard. We had 11 steals to their 10. Some of the calls were bazaar, (the worse non walk call I've ever seen plus got to be world record on walk calls generally.)
It happens but Grant was horrible turn overs, free throws, layups, etc just the worse game imaginable.
I do not understand how team after team, year after year, we can't shoot free throws... we would have won the game if we could have shot 70% of our free throws.

They just don’t practice free throws.

Blaming the refs is always a lazy excuse. Just a pet peeve.
The best refs are ones that don't become part of the game. They always are part of UR games. I am not using the officials as any sort of excuse and did not say that was the reason the Spiders lost or have lost. The officiating in the RC is truly baffling to me.

How can you question our game plan? We went 8-19 at the line and lost by 3 to a 22-6 coming in team.

Anyone else sick of listening to this broken record?

I heard this on postgame radio while waiting for the cops to allow us to leave the parking lot that will cost us $180 next year.
Back to the quote......if I'm The coach I would have been so pissed off (and said so) I probably would have gotten a T from Bob Black. Better yet suspended from the next game for my foul mouth rant. Geez, we f'ing lost our rival game and we are proud.....puke.

Year after year? What's the common denominator?

We played very well at both ends of the court. Mooney did a great job coaching and preparing the team for the rematch (the Mooney haters are going to love that). Gilyard and Cayo played like they should be on the all A10 team. Andre and Yates also had very good games. This is a team that may crack the top 25 by seasons end and if it weren't for bad foul shooting and a number of bad calls in the 1st half, we would have won handily. I thought our play in the 2nd half was one of our best all year.

WE LOST! That’s all that matters. I am so sick of CM and truthers acting like just “competing” is enough. Listen to CM’s post game interview. If you didn’t know the score, you would have thought we won by listening to him. Losing can’t be accepted if you want to receive atlarge bids. Losing is accepted by CM and some of our fans. We were just swept by our arch rival again. The results continue to be unacceptable. 6-18 against your arch rival gets you fired at any other A10 school. Our best half of the year resulted in another home loss. We can do so much better than this.

Looking at the box score, Golden went 3-10 from the foul line. Cayo also missed 3. VCU could not stop Golden, so they fouled him. The strategy worked. If he made 2 and Cayo made 1, that would have been the ball game. It was a great game. Our ball movement was strong, the defense was good.

I’d trade all the potential “all A-10” accolades for a freaking complete team capable of winning the conference. We’ve had plenty of all conference guys over the last 8 years (Jones, Anthony, Cline, Allen). All great players who represented UR well but we continually lack depth and a killer instinct to do all the “little things” (ft shooting, rebounding, consistent defense). These shortcomings and lack of results are at the feet of the coach and his system.

We lost. You know that, right?

With the exception of Gilyard, our team lacks toughness. It's no surprise that this has been our biggest issue in the Mooney era. Buck and TJ were tough gamers too, but typically we have one or two guess like that instead of a team of them. The team reflects the personality of the coach. It's not that hard to see.

Because our game plan seems to be to try to outscore our opponents by hoping we shoot an unsustainable three point percentage. We have lost this way to worse teams while shooting better overall, it’s not just this game.

You're regurgitating the same tired lines post after post. We get it: you have a crush on Mooney and think he should be anointed coach for life. The drop in attendance, and the fans taking the time to put up a billboard, and the results on the court clearly point out a picture that he's not a good coach at the D1 level. Maybe at D3, but not here.

My thoughts. I have been at every VCU game this year but for two (UVA- snow, URI- Hate driving up there for a Wed. game).

1. Yes it was. It was an exciting game. UR played hard. We get that a lot. We are some team's Superbowl. Sorry, but it is true. We have a target on our back every time we play, especially on the road.

2. The UR ticket office did all they could to keep VCU fans out. I called several times and requested more tickets. I offered to buy up to 50 more on top of the 10 I had already purchased. While I am a season ticket holder, they also know I am a VCU supporter. They were very nice in telling me that I had bought all the tickets allowed. But be warned, there are a lot of VCU fans who know what a few of us did this year and I expect that there will be more people buying season tickets and selling the extras. There are a lot of VCU fans who own businesses in the area and they can just write off the tickets as promotional items. For every season ticket holder, that will mean 12 VCU fans at next years game.

3. I think the plan was to limit Grant. We had a choice. Stop the inside game or stop the outside. We let the outside game fly and tried to stop the inside. It almost killed us, but it worked. (man, those late threes!) I don't think the plan was to foul Grant, but, if you are trying to be "the man" on any team, you need to make free-throws.

4. We are in the top of the nation in 3 point defense. You shot 50%. That is pretty good. But as I said above, I think Mike just tried to limit the inside game. It worked.

5. Noah is pretty good. You will need to find one or two like him for next year. Status quo won't work next year. The league will be better. You will have to be BETTER.

6. Yes, Jacob is the man. Guy can flat out fly and has a great handle. I just hope he does not decide to pull the Fore and take his talent elsewhere. He will be in a tough spot, waiting on the decision on Mooney.

Overall, thanks for the great game. Rival games are great. I think it most likely brought our guys back down to earth. They know they could have lost that game. And hopefully we will be better because of it.

See you in Brooklyn.

Really? You must be a college basketball savant.

2011- 6 games in the NCAA (Second year coach)
2012- 2 games in the NCAA
2013- 2 games in the NCAA
2014- 1 game in the NCAA
2015- 1 game in the NCAA
2016- 2 games in the NCAA (New Coach)
2017- 1 game in the NCAA

(Sorry guys, can not resist when someone throws me a softball)

You forgot to switch your user account to “Gallipoli”.
I think he meant the opponent...

They are in others receiving votes. I doubt anyone thinks we will be voted Top 25 in the next two games.

@fmrick I appreciate you stopping by the board and giving your thoughts/impressions from the VCU side. Some UR fans will cover their ears when it comes to opinions from “outside the bubble” but it’s important to hear from folks who aren’t emotionally invested in the spiders. Do you sense any less less animosity or intensity towards us (UR) from the VCU fan base since we have not been a top team in the league the past 8 years? I know we swept the series last year and we will always be heated rivals but I’ve almost gotten a feeling of pity from the VCU fans I have talked to this year. That’s really a first and a telling state of affairs unfortunately.

I know you didn't ask me directly, but I'll give you my impression: with ODU now in C-USA and only playing them once per year now, the animosity and intensity towards UR has increased in my opinion. Now we potentially can play you guys three times in a season.

If both programs can get to the point of having great seasons at the same time and playing games with NCAA implications for both teams, the rivalry will quickly escalate beyond what we had with ODU. VCU/ODU was like looking in the mirror at each other. VCU/UR are so different in so many ways, not to mention we're in the same city, the rivalry could easily surpass the ODU rivalry, which everyone knows at one point used to take over the city.

BTW, Gilyard's great performance against one of the top defenses in the country has propelled him to 1st in the A10 in scoring. Superstar!
