Fire Mooney

OMG, lol! I don't know why I can't get this across clearer!

of course Burton is a wing. his offensive role won't change a bit whether he's the bigger or smaller forward on the floor. I'm not asking him to become Cayo just because I play him next to Crabtree or Goose and call them the 3!

I give up. fine. we play 5 guards. they're all position-less.

In Mooney system - when it works best - you have 4 interchangeable parts on the outside 1-4 and a big man (5) who is not your typical post up big man, but someone who is comfortable on the outside, making passes, knocking down shots, etc - but can go inside when needed. Geriot was the example when it worked best. He played with Anderson, Harper, Smith, and Butler - those 4 guys could switch anything on defense, and so would Geriot - but when Geriot did, they were mindful to give more help or switch back as quickly as possible and keep him near the basket and off the perimeter as much as possible.
Cayo is not really a big man, he just can't shoot so he tends to drift towards the basket as much as possible. He is only 6-6/6-7 which these days is wing all the way. 6-9/6-10 and above is where you get inside and big guys.

to me Harper was a true stretch 4. he wasn't athletic enough to be what I call a wing. nice shooter though.

yeah, played at a whole different level senior year. don't know if you'd call that development or maturity or something else. but that senior season he was a star.

I’m really sad I missed out on seeing Harper play. That was my junior year of HS and Richmond was not at all on my radar until the first month of my senior year.

Honestly though I’m kind of glad. Had I been admitted and then watched Richmond be *that* good my senior year of HS I would have had very high expectations that would not have been met. Instead I went in with low expectations that have not been met

Bad comprehension, I didn't say his offensive game will change. Just saying that him being forced to guard interior guys and bang against goons inside will impact his game. And that definitely can impact his offense. Not sure if u ever played the game but it beats the crap out of your body guarding guys 30 lbs heavier and more physical. I'd rather Mooney just recruit better and leave Burton to be a wing.

I see what your saying about the defensive end - but that is not Mooney's system and quite frankly, not the way basketball is moving right now. Most colleges now and NBA are moving towards everyone being able to play on perimeter, even your center. I think what hurts Burton is that we have no bench. So when Grant must go out, and even if you bring in Grace or Sal - he is asked to pick up the slack in terms of defense and rebounding. And I agree - it will wear on him, along with Cayo as well.
But it all depends on matchups. Like Hofstra had a good big guy down low, he gave us problems. Remember playing St. Mary's in the NCAA tourney - they had a good big guy down low - gave us problems. But how many of those exist now in the A10 and NCAA overall?

he'll cover the guy that Cayo is currently covering. does that assignment seem substantially different than the guy he's covering now? is Nathan covering a lot of 250 lb guys?

I know both of Davidson's interior starters are 6'8 and 225+, Rhody lot of big physical guys. As much as everyone says game has changed, still need to guard big guys. And our best teams the last 8 seasons, last season and this, have a "4" that scores mostly from 5 feet and in. Bad for Burton to play 4 for his pro prospects.

Burton is not a pro 4. He might not even be a pro 3 - he might be more of a shooting guard type on the next level. He is 6-6/6-7. And he shoots really well from 3 as of now at 41%. He is athletic, but his athleticism is more in the open floor, not off the dribble and driving (right now). Remember too - he has 2 more years left, so a lot he can develop in that time.

I just don't see how it would affect his pro prospects. you're either athletic enough, big enough, and talented enough or you aren't. mostly athletic enough. and he is. you agreed 4 posts above that his offensive game wouldn't change. so his pro prospects get hurt by showing he's physical enough to defensively battle against a bigger guy once in a while? is Cayo that much bigger or stronger?

is playing off guard hurting Francis? no. he gets to do a lot of the same things Gilyard does. if he's good enough to be a pro, they won't care that he wasn't the primary ball handling guard.

listen, I'm with you. I'd love us to pick up a big forward in the next few months who's so good he should start. and a 4 star center too. I'm doubtful that happens. even if we add a good big forward he probably isn't so good to move a healthy Crabtree to the bench. so the reality I'm facing is that Burton will be our bigger forward, next to Crabtree plus 2 guards and a big. if something changes and there's a bigger forward starter next to Burton, great.

Please guys, you are confusing me with these numbers. Thought positionless basketball was the name of the game now. ;)

There are a ton of athletic 6'7 guys that don't make it in the league every year. A boat load. Making him pound inside on D, and whether you believe it or not it will happen on O more than if he is playing the wing - is not good for his chances in the NBA. Yes, he is already a pro player at some level, but let's not screw up his NBA chances Mooney.

In the Spider pecking order:
Tarrant > Beilein > Mooney > Everyone else > Wainwright
Both Beilein and Mooney have listened to and learned from Coach Tarrant. Wainwright not so much.

There’s not a billboard big enough for what should be written about Mooney. Suckered once again as he collects another million dollars.

Our decision makers going to be doing everything they can to get the NCAA to cancel the tournament again. That way Mooney won’t have missed it. And can just keep paying Mooney rather than having to find a new coach.

nobody can defend Mooney anymore. Not even VT4700. we reflect our coach yet again. That was one of the more shameful performances. Played flat, constantly beaten to loose balls. the only energy we showed is bitching to the refs which was frequent by many players.

out of at large consideration already. With this team? Mooney and Hardt with that ridiculous unnecessary extension this summer should both be out. Even PQ watching on TV had to be like ‘I’m pouring $ into this?”

It was obvious. CM played the “poor us” card during the pre-game press conference. The team played that way. Totally lost anything gained last year.

I myself would like to thank Coach Mooney for saving me a bunch of money over the past 5 years in giving to this dumpster fire of an athletic department.

Yes, that is issue number one, since he was castrated after the Charlotte meltdown, the program and Mooney have gone soft. And if I was mooneys boss I would fine him for talking to the press and perpetuating excuses.

I am going to put on my sunglasses. Donate some money to this athletic program. What is your reason to donate? I don't have any.
Mooney is the best salesman. He provides such suspense every year. He finds a way to around tough questions and being held to a higher standard. We just had a two week pause. Covid we need more practice we werent ready. Covid appears again. Wipe everything down. Delete the whole roster and coaches. Now I am CLEAN.

The sh*% show is that do all of you have a high confidence level in Hardt and PQ finding another coach? I think we are looking at a 17 year lull, counting the last 7 years. Mooney canned three years from now, then two unsuccessful hires, then hopefully a new AD.

No. Hardt is kinda like Phil Fulmer. In over his head. TN is a dumpster fire but at least they realized 1 thing. We need our coach out and we don’t need our AD making the new hire. this was a retirement gig for Hardt.

the good news is this job would be in very high demand so we could make a hire really without AD involvement. I do have some level of confidence that PQ is tiring of this bullshit with Moon.

You must wear sunglasses. And believe all is well no matter what. Losing to Lasalle and Hofstra at home. The same season. Its time to wake up and smell the coffee.
