Fire Mooney

Agreed. Watching their body language (with the exception of Cayo) all season, I don't see much fire. Also wonder if Mooney's message has finally grown stale and worn on our seniors.
I’m not sure I want them back....frankly they’ve quit ( except Cayo). They play so flat it’s simply not worth support a great bunch of guys, talented but underachieving

I am waiting for the next coaches meeting at Glory Days. Order my wings with ranch dressing. First tough question. "We competed so well i am so proud of our guys". Next question.
Who prefers Ranch instead of Blue Cheese with wings?!?!

If I’m not going to be able to see Richmond in the tourney, I want at least these sort of important questions answered!

If Mooney is not fired after this horrendous season and terrible coaching job, thisprogram is not worth following. The administration would show that they care nothing about success or their fanbase. Damn, firing Mooney now would not seem like they are the Yankees in the 1970’s... he has been here for 16 years and been given reprieve after reprieve.
I even think the media has to start expecting a firing after the billboard and now this very disappointing season of all seniors.

The winningest coach in Richmond history has everything go wrong this season, with two top players unable to play, Sherod and Crabtree,
and numerous other injuries to top players, including Golden, Goose, Francis and topping all of that off with Covid-19.
No, he’s not going anywhere.

Can you imagine going to your job every day for 16 years, looking at the numbers and seeing that your chief competitor was kicking your ass almost every year? And that the new product you thought was going to be dynamite actually turned out to give people cancer instead? And then giving a contract extension to your general manager or chief product developer and thinking things would get better next year?

we aren’t Coke and Pepsi here. We are Coke and RC.

Every team has injuries. How many years does Mooney get to use that as an excuse?

& injuries got us to here in the first place. Golden and Sherod had medical redshirts or they would already be out of eligibility. I love that excuse. The injuries arguably are what saved his job last time and allowed him to proclaim the "best class ever"

looks like some No votes came in from Vcu fans. I would like to manually add my Yes vote if possible bc I’m not eligible without having the Tweeter.

It's hard to know which Chris Mooney they're talking about. For example, I would vote no to firing the one who writes about the environment for the Washington Post, but yes to firing the one who doesn't know how to coach defense.

Are you saying WaPo one does know how to coach defense?

Hmmmm, today’s column from Jeff Borzello mentions not 1, not 2, but 3 A10 coaches as potential candidates for BC. Schmidt, Mooney, and Anthony Grant. Interesting...

Like they said - Mooney is on the second tier. And unless UR wins the A10 tourney and gets into the dance and makes a run to the sweet 16, that is where he will stay. His name will pop up, but only if choices 1-2-3 turn down the job.

What will be interesting is - will the Spiders make the NIT now that is cut down to 16 teams. I would think we might be on the bubble for that now with limited field. If UR loses first or second game in A10 tourney - I don't know if we make that - and that will not look good.

But if UR is able to salvage an NIT bid and win a game or two there - Mooney gets extension at UR and it will be labeled as NCAA team last year and NIT Team this year as UR battled COVID precautions and pauses and injuries to make the NIT and have a successful year.

And as I have said before - Chris Mooney is a fine person. He is the epitome of what this school wants in terms of character, recruiting good kids, doing well in the community and being a good spokesperson. Those are all good things - but at some point you got to win games and make the NCAA. As fans - we prioritize winning above all. But I think the school has shown us time and time again that it doesn't think that way. For that reason - I think Mooney gets extended after this season and this thread will need to wait another 2-3 years before we can discuss again.

I don’t see any chance, unless there are transfer miracles or all the seniors stay, how we don’t just have single digit wins next year. Possibly 5 or less depending on the OOC.

Trap, you are very predictable in always find saying you for want Mooney to go away but then find some inane justifications for keeping him.

We might keep him because well we have dsyfunctional leadership, but no one is gonna sell us in saving him by saying "ooh look, we got an NIT bid" And we certainly aren't "extending him" off an NIT bid.

As for Mooney being a good spokesperson. If you define, good spokesperson as someone who doesn't fly off the handle and curse during than yeah, I suppose he is. But Mooney is not a good public speaker, he is boring and does exude any confidence at all. If you want to look at good spokesperson, see Tony Bennett or Shaka Smart. These guys are articulate, engaging, and insightful. Mooney is none of those.

You might be surprised the amount of cream puffs he would try to schedule in the non-conference slate to inflate the win totals next season but yeah, in conference it will be a bloodbath. There will be a good eight teams that we will have no hope of beating at all, 3 teams we might possibly steal one from if the stars align, and two more basement dwellers that we can wrestle around in the mud with for the leftover scraps of the conference.

I'm not as ready as some of you to write off next season as a disaster. yes, it would be surprising if we're exceptional. our current seniors play almost all of the minutes and score almost all of the points. but you know what will happen when they graduate? others will fill those roles! that's college basketball.

I don't know for sure where the points will come from, but they'll come.
I like what we're seeing from the young guys, and a couple of next year's freshmen will get a shot. still on spot on the roster to fill, too.

Yep, I am going to try to talk myself into having some optimism next year, with Mooney back I am about 80% sure he has to be.

To have a good season next year - top 4-5 in A10:

Starting backcourt will need to be 2 of these 3 guys: Wison, Dji and Nelson. I'm a Goose fan, but he does not shoot it good enough from 3, and feel he is well suited to be a solid big minutes guy off the bench. If he is starting scoring will be an issue I believe. Would love to see a fully healthy Nelson and Wilson battle it out for point guard, with Dji winning the 2 guard spot over Goose. Sorry Spiderdad, but Mooney does not like to seem to start big guards, so my gut is he doesn't hand the job to Goose, he will go with small ball backcourt, but pulling for DJI to win the job by merit.

Burton continue same progression, which would put him as a 1st team all A10.

Cayo come back.

Sal progress and take the next step.

Find a transfer big man that can step on the court from day one and impact winning. Anyway you can, like your job depends on it.

1 or 2 of our wing recurits (Randolph, Dread, Noise) is capable of being in the rotation, and one is even a break out freshman.

Lot has to happen, but it is possible. It is getting harder and harder to believe Mooney can do it though. Win the A10 tourney and you may be able to get some mojo back.

Yeah, we might become the next St J or LaSalle. Oh I forgot that they both beat us this year.

23, I'm starting Grace at the 5 unless someone better walks through the door ... which I doubt. Wilson's my point. and our two best are Burton and a healthy Crabtree. that's 4.
pick the 5th from Sal, Goose, and Dji.

I'd like the 5th to be Sal but that makes Crab a really big 2 which would not be typical Mooney. in the little we've seen him, Dji seems like a Goose clone: good handle, good defense, slasher. if Dji is a consistent outside shooter, he has the advantage. but if it's a tie, advantage to the Mooney senior.

we've seen two Burton's this year. we need the really good one every night. and a healthy Crabtree. give me those and I feel pretty good.

If this was the NBA it really feels like Mooney would have been fired yesterday morning. I haven’t even been able to bring myself to come to this board since the loss. Too embarrassed to type anything, and it has been 48 hours and I’m more heated now. How is there no outcry outside this board? Do we really only have 50 fans of this program?

I don’t know how we are going to make it through 3 more years of watching this coach. I will be in my mid-30’s before I ever get to see my alma mater in the NCAA tournament. That is just not right

How many D3 programs can we schedule next year? I’m sure we can find a dozen wins out there next year.

Imagine-next year’s group could have some chances BUT only if Mooney changes his system to promote offensive rebounding and a defense that will not allow layups and dunks at will. Otherwise, same old game.

How is there no outcry outside this board?
Complacency & acceptance of mediocrity come to mind. A willingness to be the bridesmaid and never the bride. Hardt & Mooney should apply for copyright on "competing".

If we were at the poker table I'd say, "I'll see you & raise you 16 years on that one." ;)

Sman, completely forgot about Crabtree, feel bad for him but he is the definition of injury prone. Not counting on him. Grace, I get why you may like him, but man he cannot compete athletically. We need an infusion of talent, at least two bigs if Cayo doesn't come back.

I think you misunderstood my post. I am in the camp that based on the results this year - he should be let go. We should fire him.

What I was saying is get ready for the athletic department to spin it as such that we were an NCAA team last year, but COVID stopped the tourney. Our team and coach battled COVID this year along with 3 separate pauses to make the NIT and win a game or two. And above all - Chris is a fine person and as such will be rewarded with a 2-3 year extension after this season.

I am not saying I agree with that logic - I am just saying get ready for the article by JOC and letter from Hardt that outlines all this the day after he inks the extension.

Hardt is going to get sore arms from moving the goalposts every year if he does that.
