Fire Mooney

But seriously, most recently reported salary for McKay was 640k, but think he’s signed an extension since then, so has to be more.

I think his comment shows WHY we consistently underachieve. His comment was an honest reflection of how he sees the game.

We were in fact, very good on offense in the 2 nd half. And this is the only lens he can see anyone or anything through. He literally can only see how well people do running the offense (and not even what results a player gets). To him, all players and all games and all aspects of the game are judged solely by how his blessed offense looks. And in his mind, if you looked good on offense, you must have been good on defense because being good is only based on offense. Who plays, how much they play etc. is all about one's ability to run the offense correctly etc.

And this is why it will never change under him. He is simply incapable of seeing the whole product. We have seen plenty of examples of it. Grant has been terrible on defense for years (and this has nothing to do with his finger) but Mooney has in no way pushed him to be better or taken time from him etc. because he is vital to the offense. He did apparently tell Grant to make sure he doesn't foul too much because we need him on offense. He didn't however, coach him up, teach him how to play tough and not foul while doing it, he simply let him play less tough to protect his foul situation and that accomplished all he cared about. Deon Tayler is another example. He did everything right on offense. Never mind that he actually made no plays. the offense ran smoothly (albeit without actually, you know . . . scoring). Sal K. is the opposite example. He looks awkward and not a good fit with the offense, so don't play him . . . ever really. Don't develop him etc. Bench him as soon as he makes a mistake (which is always on offense). Go look at film and then note how much more tenacious and tough Sal is than Grant or Grace (despite his frame). But Moon man will never see this because he just looks at Sal getting lost in the offense sometimes. Offense shortcomings are not tolerated. Defensive shortcomings are not even noticed! And its worse than imagined even because its not even offensive results that matter. Just how pretty you look doing it. Also explains offensive rebounding disdain. It will never be pretty and guys who do it well aren't going to look pretty running our "pace and space" offense. Also explains why you can shoot 1-11 and nothing happens. Because Moon didn't even notice how terrible you were shooting because he was busy admiring how good the offense looked getting you 11 shots!

The man just doesn't see anything but the "rhythm and fluidity" of his offense. And you get results like last night where your offense was a thing of beauty in the 2nd half and you still lost because you couldn't stop anyone from scoring and he not only failed to notice his defense was putrid, he apparently thought we were good! Explains why we never change anything in our game. The offense generally IS good and his doesn't see anything else so he doesn't see anything that needs changing. And the oft repeated comments about needing to play the bench guys more - - - doesn't even realize his substitution pattern during the game (as he has often admitted after the game with his I need to get them more time comments) because all he can see is his offense running smoothly withe 5 guys and being so unable to deal with anything less that he just can't even think about subs who he knows won't look as pretty.

This is who he is and its not going to change. I am just still amazed that their are so many (on this board and within the school) who either can't see it for what it is OR think what it is is good enough!

I’m not sold on McKay…he has a long history of mediocrity before Liberty. Did he suddenly become a great coach, or is it more that he’s at a school that’s so much better resourced than its conference mates that they can’t help but succeed?

Or working for 6 years for Bennett made him a better coach before going back to Liberty?

Of course there will be some in the administration that take the simple approach.

“What is the men’s basketball team record since 5/2019?”

36-13

“Ok, good enough, moving on...”

Never looking at the losses to see that some were ones that we couldn’t afford to lose to bad teams, some were wins we critically needed over good teams...

Can you imagine going to your job every day for 16 years, looking at the numbers and seeing that your chief competitor was kicking your ass almost every year? And that the new product you thought was going to be dynamite actually turned out to give people cancer instead? And then giving a contract extension to your general manager or chief product developer and thinking things would get better next year?

I think for Mooney it is not hard to do, collect check, get free suits or complimentary cars, gift cards to BWW or wherever. Have to go in once in 16 years to have a semi UNCOMFORTABLE meeting with Hardt, though it probably was not at all. Yep, can see how he does it. Don't like it, but I am feeling his vibe. Again, that discussion I had - probably like 7 years back with the former UVA assistant and head D1 coach: "Mooney has the best job in the land, big contract, no pressure from the admin." Didn't really believe him at the time, but every year that went by I thought back to that convo and said hmmm, maybe this guy that was just in the industry knows what he is talking about. Here we are 7 or 8 years later, and Mooney is not budging. He would probably love to get some guys or girls to put a billboard now so he can play the woe is me card, and the players could have his back by losing three out of four.

Not sure about McKay either, though 2k makes a good point about working for Bennett.

I do think you have to look at coaches that were able to out resource and have decided recruiting advantages over the peers.

Look at Shaka - he was bringing in top 100 guys all day long - and to his credit winning with them at VCU.

But now at Texas, he has been average going against other big boys. Again, if there is not a coaching comittee with GK, EL and 97 involved, and we leave this to Hardt or that one god awful search committte, we could be looking at 2027 before the next stiff after Mooney is gone, and hopefully Hardt forgets to come into work.

TX is #14 so while its taken shaka some time, he seems to be righting the ship.

Ok this is the forum you use to vent all your frustrations when...fill in any of your gripes and end with COACH SUCKS. Then you begin the spiral of veiled threats to stop your significant donations and hamstring the University fundraising efforts. The behavior is pretty similar to the 4 year old who doesn’t get his way and decides to hold his breath. It’s great theater to read the posts of grown men who are also basketball experts when we don’t win or do win but not the way they want to win. Sprint to the internet and bury the coaches and team. What a bunch of geniuses.

Just to be clear 44, you think Mooney is the best UR can do and we should be happy with the state of the program?

Nobody on this board buried the team. They managed to do that themselves. It doesn't take a genius to see that the Mooney thing isn't working. But thanks for stopping by and wagging your finger at us.

You don't have anything to say yourself, Genius, except criticizing posters who have been long time fans and DONATERS.

You don't have to be a genius to know bad when you see it, Genius. You make about two posts a year, Genius, so go ahead and make another one, and then crawl back into your Mensa hole.

You do realize that teams that regularly win championships and compete for the big prize consistently don't have nearly as many frustrations to vent, right? Maybe there are good reasons so many are frustrated with this program?

By the way, didn't you sprint to the internet and use this forum to vent your frustrations? Looks like you filled in your gripes. Are you a grown man, because your behavior [in this message] is pretty similar to the 4-year-old who doesn't get his way and decides to hold his breath. Your writing did offer some great theater (theatre), but it does not lead one to believe that you are a genius.

Asking for a friend. :D :D

so would you be satisfied with another ten years of the same results? do you even go to games? are you a season ticket holder?

U guys should email Hardt & express the need for change. I certainly cannot say it will make any difference but I don’t think it can hurt.

Queally is a loser. A rich loser, but a loser nonetheless. If he cared as much about our athletic department winning as he does about keeping his friends employed, we'd be in great shape. Sadly, he signed off on this mediocrity and he needs to own it.

Just compete get some donations. Continue to promote the Richmond brand. Make sure to avoid any drama or costly drama that could get you fired. Win a few games be on the bubble for the tournament. Find excuses to not making the tournament. Covid, injuries, its not our year yet. Go to the Tavern and Glory Days avoid any tough questions from naysayers only strong supporters. When you have a tough meeting find your faithful supporters and buy some shades!!

Mooney thought the defense played well in the second half per his post game comments. Lol. We must lead the league in uncontested layups and dunks. He's in total denial.
That is just plain ridiculous. Question... did we get even one dunk or easy basket the whole half? They got dunks or layups on more than half their baskets. Our D is an embarrassment

I don't know what it'll take, but it would seem performance isn't a criteria. That has long passed us by. We hear rumblings here or there of the xyz's of what he must do or that expectations are now understood, but me thinks Mooney is coach for life. It's his team until he decides differently.

I have posted this or something like it a few times, figured why not bring it here (again?) to just to set proper expectations 😣

"I already accepted that Moonpie isn't going anywhere this offseason no matter what and that all shortcomings for next season, of which there will be MANY, will just be blamed on losing the "greatest class ever" and covid fallout so the next honest shot at losing the guy will not be until March 2023 at the absolute soonest in my estimation"

Divorce is such a difficult option. There are a lot of emotions wrapped up in your comment. It will take many years to unpack the issues. With cases like this, experts recommend counseling. For some, that may be the best option.

This Coach has had over a decade to make the doubters eat crow. You did just nicely sum up the attitude of our athletic department “shut up, keep donating, and let the experts handle this”.

I highly doubt anything is going to happen. Basically the big doners have full control. They believe in being mediocre and not winning championships. I only supporters being close to Mooney or staff members at RIchmond. People supporting the college no matter what happens. Showing positive vibes in the community and not doing anything but sometimes win. However, winning at the highest level doesn't seem to be important at all.

That’s why building a new practice facility is such a “head scratcher.”
