Danny Rocco "took Richmond Football as far as he could"

That video definitely provided some insight into why he left. He wants the band, big crowd, and atmosphere that Delaware provides. Definitely different than what Richmond provides and that's fine. I have no problem with him fixing Delaware, so long as we kick their ass en route to a CAA championship every year.

Suggested it a day or two ago in another thread, but now it really does seem like Rocco wanted, in part, a bigger atmosphere than we have, with all the bells and whistles. That's fine. We don't need it in order to win a national championship, but if that's what floats his boat, it's his prerogative. We'll just worry about winning games.

You know what they say sometimes you don't know what you have until you lose it

He's just saying what he thinks they want to hear at Delaware. For his sake, I hope he works them better than he tried to work us. Otherwise, he would likely still be here.
Time will tell. It may work for him this time with all his experience and mistakes made in attempting to get what he wants.

One of the things Danny did that always struck me as wrong was his claim you needed 8 wins. My thought was, "do you think our goal is to make the playoffs, or to win it all?" Well I guess for him that's where it was -- he took us as far as HE could.

have to admit, really liked what and how DR brought our program back. think he is in a better spot for him and we are in a better spot for us. am excited to now have a spread offense and a guy who will demand a great defense and wants to be here more than anywhere else. winning a national championship is not easy, there are some excellent programs out there but i like our chances a lot better now.

So many mixed feelings about this. I said before this season and truly believed that we would win a national title in the next five years with Rocco. Not sure if I feel the same way now. Going to be tough and I expect Delaware to get to our level and pass us and the rest of the CAA very soon. Unless we change some things like facilities we aren't going to move ahead with teams like jmu and UD. I think Huesman is a good coach but I don't think he's better than Rocco, he is better with defense at least. Also what kind of offense will we run and can Lauletta (if he stays) continue his success in it?

But isn't that the goal of the vast majority of college coaches? I can't fault the man for wanting a bigger stage. What I am miffed about is his sudden case of mouth diarrhea

He could and would've won a national title if he stayed. I hope Huesman ends up being an upgrade but in my opinion Rocco is the better coach. Rocco just seemed like he could get the most out of anyone and the players would run through a wall for him and vice versa.

remember my suggestion about lines in the sand -- we've got a great coach let's see what he can do. Danny's goal was to win 8 games and see what happens, Russ is saying his goal is to win a national championship. I like where we are
It will be interesting to see who has the better program in the next five years. Good god I hope this works out for us. Rocco provided a since of consistency since he was the first coach we've had in a while that has stayed for 5 years and it's just weird that now we have someone new and don't know what's going to happen.

VT, welcome to college football! 5 year shelf life for a coach is about average.

First with 11 starters and 18 players out with injuries, a masterful job by Rocco this year and
without the injuries, we were a championship caliber team. But what Huesman did at UTC with the
demise of the SoCon may be amazing also. Before App State left Chatty was giving them fits. RH now
moves into a conference with a higher caliber of teams, attracting better recruits. I know when
London left, we as fans were hoping Huesman would come back, but he was already making an impact at UTC. The key to all of this initially is who he brings on staff and how our players and recruits respond. I remember wondering same thing about Rocco coming from the Big South as to what he really offered.

We will be find and maybe what happened with Rocco woke up our admin and put some fire into our fan base to provide better support for our program.

What is needed is a plan and concerted efforts , which will take time ,to attract and additional 3,000-5,000 fan base. This is helped considerably while you have a winning program
We will not get more than 500 more students attending the games regularly in addtion to its existence base 200-500 and you need to change fraternity rules which makes it hard for them to make the games an event
So we need to find 2500-4500 more people to make the stadium filled every week even when school is out
It's called community outreach its working with youth football its strong communication to alumni. It's creating fun atmosphere and promotions but it's developing a specific plan for different demographics
Here's the good news. We need an additional Five thousand regular fans not fifty thousand
A strong AD dept with a plan gets that done over next three years with progress in each year. Not rocket science just a good plan and a team to implement

If it works out we can get up to ten thousand with temp seating to a lot of the games
Just my thoughts on this.

The brotherhood of fraternities and the sisterhood of sororities can add a lot to school spirit and to the atmosphere at athletic events if the administration gives them encouragement and some latitude.

We have to change from being a football game to a can't miss event. Frats and sororities need to play a big part. We need to promote a better tailgating atmosphere. I get tired of seeing the traffic roll in five minutes before kickoff. We need more cheerleaders roaming the parking lots getting people excited. Love to see the Spider Walk come through the parking lot with a band playing, cheerleaders jumping. Ever been to an Ol' Miss game and seen the walk come through The Grove? Exciting. Have better advertising during the week promoting the game as a can't miss event. The only football in town. Have better promotions, pro athletes signing autographs, high school battle of the bands, fireworks, whatever. Have to make it an event you don't want to miss.

the CAA has had a few long term coaches, Laycock, Talley, McDonnel, .... so there's hope we can break that 5 year trend (and a lot of that turn over is coaches who don't meet expectations)

Exactly. Use things like battle of Resturant's at tailgates get groups with followings involved your right make it the place to come. I have lots of ideas but I don't work in the AD office.

I am all in with Huesman too. HIs vision is a national championship and as fan1 stated, Rocco is 8 games and the rest is gravy!!!

We still have a problem. Lets not forget that. Lets hope some changes are on the horizon. If not , Rocco spoke the truth. We have made a great hire but changes need to be made or else we are will suffer. Rocco's last words " the climate is changing quickly". Lets hope its now in a positive direction.

after all is said ; attendance ,facilities, or marching band; at Delaware he can recruit the C student who is the A athlete

Oh no not "Climate Change".

I hear you but look what Stanford, cal and northwestern just to make a few. All more diifcult that richmond to get into. Each school has bands and each has a limited number of exemptions. I'll match our talent to any school in 1-AA and most in lower tier of fbs. I think the issue was for walkons more that the scholarship players. That was DR issue.

we have exemptions just not so far as some of you wish to go. a smart coach knows our limitations and recruits within them, see Dave Clawson, or he can fight them, see wainwright, rocco.

Tom, my statement was about building attendance. Yes, Delaware is a bigger school and they will have recruiting advantages but we have been competitive with them in the past and we are competitive with JMU now. We are a small private school with high academic standards and that will not change. I do believe our new coach will use that as a recruiting tool. Can we make some adjustments in our admissions process to expand our recruiting pool? I think we can without sacrificing our standards.
