The Richmond Spiders land Noah Holmes
by Andy Hilton, recruit757

Last July, Noah Holmes (2019 LB/RB 6-2 210) landed an offer from assistant coach Marc Bacote and the University of Richmond.

Holmes had a huge senior season where the Lions advanced to the second round of the playoffs and finished with the most wins in school history. In the first week of the season, Holmes proved himself on the defensive side of the ball, logging eight sacks and a number of additional tackles for a loss in his team’s win over Heritage HS (NN).

On the season, Holmes led the Warhill defense with 126 tackles, 24 QB hurries, four pass break-ups and three blocked punts. As a running back and wildcat QB, Holmes scored eight touchdowns and piled up 864 rushing yards.

He exhibited leadership throughout the season and took his time with his recruitment. Noah played through an injury when his team needed him most.

During the playoffs, he indicated that he was certain of where he wanted to go to college. Late last week, Warhill coach Thad Wheeler shared the news of Noah’s commitment:

“Richmond had been recruiting him since last spring. During that time he had developed a good relationship with the coaches. Following his official visit last weekend with the new facilities, and what Richmond has to offer that is when he finally decided to make his commitment. Richmond is getting a heck of a football player. He is an explosive player who loves contact and has a natural instinct for the ball and rushing the QB. What a lot of people don’t realize is that he had to play his senior year with issues in both hips. He still stood out on the field even not being close to 100%. What he played through says a lot about him. He has had surgery to fix the issues and once back to full speed Richmond is getting a heck of an explosive linebacker.”

With his commitment, Holmes becomes the first player from the 757 in the recruiting class of 2019 to commit to the Spiders. His other offers included Towson, Charlotte, Elon, Campbell, Fordham, Hampton and Southern Illinois.

HERO Sports will take you conference-by-conference with FCS recruiting, and let you know who has the class to be coveted.

Today (Jan. 25), we rank the Colonial Athletic Association -- taking into account the early signing period along with the commitments who have poured in since mid December.

Today's ranking (below) takes into account only high school recruits who have committed to FCS schools as of the night of Jan. 24 (NOTE: JUCOs and other transfers will be evaluated later this spring). Further updates will continue through national signing day. How do we rank? We pay more attention to the scholarship offers an athlete received than any kind of star rating from a recruiting service. If an FCS recruit holds 17 offers and 6 are of the FBS variety? That will rank him above a recruit who holds three -- we let the colleges do the evaluations of film, they're the ones who get paid well to do that. Full final rankings will be released for teams and prospects on Monday, Feb. 11 at 12 p.m. ET

LIVE: The FCS Commitment Tracker - Hour By Hour Until Signing Day

RECRUITING SCHEDULE: Conf. by Conf., Pos. by Pos. - And The Grand Finale

BMAC'S CAA TAKE:
Fans outside of James Madison are going to get sick of this, but even with Mike Houston moving on to East Carolina -- if the Dukes can hold on to even half of the original recruits who say they're still considering (and NOT decommitted from JMU) the Dukes will win this conference from a recruiting standpoint. I will say though, Delaware, Richmond and Villanova are right on the cusp of upsetting the apple cart. And all three programs are within a stone's throw of the JMU juggernaut, recruiting wise. New Hampshire also benefited greatly from the coaching change at UMass, landing several former Minutemen pledges, so the Wildcats are somebody to watch. So fasten your seat belts folks -- this could get interesting.

THE LEADER?: JMU is winning, so far, but if those big-time unsigned talents opt elsewhere on national signing day (see list below)? It would change the order of things a bit.

THE UPSTARTS?: Elon, having made the playoffs the past two seasons, is hardly an "afterthought" within the CAA, but the Phoenix had a coaching change and are not a traditional FCS power -- and this class is impressive. Kudos to former head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff for putting this program at the forefront, and kudos to recruiting stud and new head coach Tony Trisciani (from his days at Villanova AND Elon) when it comes to holding an impressive class (six recruits hold FBS offers) together even through a coaching transition. Elon is a program heading places, and the recruiting class proves it.

Check back on Feb. 11 for the final rankings.

Not good that jmu is getting that many top guys. Not sure if it's always been that way or not but it's easy to see why they are dominating the CAA and will be for the foreseeable future.

Not buying it. 2 of the top 3 gets in the entire CAA play the same position at the same HS? Plus, none of their top 3 are signed.

have always thought that umwcah had the best talent year in and year out but did not have the best coach which allowed the rest to compete. when you have the two together, as we have just seen, hard to beat.

Are Rolfe and Smith preferred walk-ons? Are they getting scholarships? I don't see them on the signing day lists.

Spiders pick up a quarterback, Air Force transfer Beau English, from DeMatha High in Maryland
JOHN O'CONNOR·3 hours ago

The University of Richmond may have acquired its starting quarterback.

Beau English will transfer to UR from Air Force, where he spent two years. English, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining, recently signed a grant-in-aid with the Spiders, according to a Richmond spokesperson, and is expected to enroll at UR over the summer.

English, a running threat as well as a passer, did not play in a game during two years at Air Force.

English, a 6-foot 200-pounder from Stevenson, Md., set the school passing record (4,558 yards) at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md. He threw for 45 career touchdowns and ran for 23. From a military family, English considered Air Force, Army and Navy out of DeMatha.

English last season was third-team QB for the Falcons, who finished 5-7 and third among FBS teams in rushing offense (283.5 ypg).

In UR's 15 spring sessions, redshirt juniors Joe Mancuso and Reid Chenault (Goochland) received most of the work at quarterback. Chenault came to UR as a walk-on and started the Spiders' 2018 season finale, a 10-6 win at William & Mary. He played in three other games last year. Mancuso made four starts last season for the Spiders, who went 4-7 (2-6 CAA). Richmond is bringing in freshman quarterback Jackson Walker.

As a dual-threat quarterback, English fits what the Spiders want to do. UR coach Russ Huesman said he would like his quarterback to run about 10 times a game.

Spiders QBs last season (4-7, 2-6 CAA) threw 18 interceptions. In the 124-member FCS, only VMI threw more (19).
