Spiders pick up a quarterback, Air Force transfer Beau English, from DeMatha High in Maryland
JOHN O'CONNOR·3 hours ago

The University of Richmond may have acquired its starting quarterback.

Beau English will transfer to UR from Air Force, where he spent two years. English, who has three seasons of eligibility remaining, recently signed a grant-in-aid with the Spiders, according to a Richmond spokesperson, and is expected to enroll at UR over the summer.

English, a running threat as well as a passer, did not play in a game during two years at Air Force.

English, a 6-foot 200-pounder from Stevenson, Md., set the school passing record (4,558 yards) at DeMatha High School in Hyattsville, Md. He threw for 45 career touchdowns and ran for 23. From a military family, English considered Air Force, Army and Navy out of DeMatha.

English last season was third-team QB for the Falcons, who finished 5-7 and third among FBS teams in rushing offense (283.5 ypg).

In UR's 15 spring sessions, redshirt juniors Joe Mancuso and Reid Chenault (Goochland) received most of the work at quarterback. Chenault came to UR as a walk-on and started the Spiders' 2018 season finale, a 10-6 win at William & Mary. He played in three other games last year. Mancuso made four starts last season for the Spiders, who went 4-7 (2-6 CAA). Richmond is bringing in freshman quarterback Jackson Walker.

As a dual-threat quarterback, English fits what the Spiders want to do. UR coach Russ Huesman said he would like his quarterback to run about 10 times a game.

Spiders QBs last season (4-7, 2-6 CAA) threw 18 interceptions. In the 124-member FCS, only VMI threw more (19).

What's a little unusual is that while Beau has apparently signed an LOI with UR,it appears that his Twitter account has not acknowledged the intended transition nor has he acknowledged the transition on the college football transfer portal.

The kid has previously been fickle on staying-going from the AFA.Case in point was his intention to transfer to UVa which he later rescinded.

geez - did we get intercepted signing a transfer QB? Way too familiar a feeling over the past 12 months...

I talked to folks with direct knowledge this morning. English is enrolled at Richmond, off the portal and trying to finish the semester at Air Force under the radar. I'm told that he didn't go to UVA because he didn't want to sit out and he never got out of the dog house with the Air Force coaching staff for the UVA flip flop so he never got on the field. He arrives on campus in June. This is solid.

JOC article can and has likely been read anywhere now including Colorado Springs. No
need for using stealth aircraft not picked up by radar.

this makes perfect sense to me. with a month left in class,I would want to be under the radar. he knows he's not playing at air force, and why sit out a 3rd year at an FBS school. surely our coaches have told him of our needs, and how he fits the offense. he has not had this since he left high school. Its time for this talented kid to think in terms of pleasing himself and not dad's background. he gets a first class education and a short drive for mom and dad!!!

For some reason no one on this board gives Jackson Walker a chance. Very little is said about him and everyone is looking for a QB out of the transfer portal. I get that based on what happened on the field last year and it would be great if we did get someone who has actually played at the FBS/FCS level. Then I would understand handing him the starting position going into camp. I hope Russ didn't promise this guy the starting position, has an open competition at camp, and let's the best man win. If it is Beau that's great because he earned it. Remember he has to compete against 3 experienced QB's (as far as they actually took snaps last year), and even though they didn't perform that well still have played D1 football, plus an incoming 3 Star, All-State QB with high school stats that are just as good as Beau's were.
Same could be said about Braxton Hughes. He made a good impression on April 6 but is never mentioned in any article about the QB situation.
Also, I think only 2 of our current QBs took snaps last season.

On the other side of the coin, he may have foreseen that he was going to be backing up Bryce Perkins at UVa, and that's why he changed his mind. He wants to at least have the opportunity to start in 2019.

The irony of the "Air" Force throwing the ball less than pretty much any other team in college football isn't lost on him, either.

I would not be surprised if one of these athletic quick QBs is moved to a WR like the kid who came out of Yorktown HS several years ago as a QB and ended up one of our top receivers and ran the wildcat quite a bit.

Russ and Durden would like to use the Chatty playbook with English just as they had with Jacob at UTC.Jacob passed for 20 times a game and ran for 15 times a game at Chatty.

English is familiar with the size and speed of the game(likely on AFA scout teams) during the past 2 seasons.DeMatha’s recent high school football teams could likely give the lower 1/2 FCS teams a good game given their OOC and the WCAC.
Young QB Walker being thrown to the opposing wolves prematurely wouldn’t be pretty for either him or UR.

I’m curious too as the younger Trau was just used to promote the Day of Giving for Athletics.. hmm, give money to support my team.

I was intrigued by what I saw of Hughes net the spring game. Had never heard his name before but he may have some potential. Walker sounds like a good one at QB too but Huesman has said his goal is to redshirt every freshman every year if he can. Walker may have had a shot at playing if we were desperate, but with English we are no longer desperate.

If he can just give us touch backs and deep kickoffs, this will be a great signing. So tired of letting opponents start at 40 yard line or worse. Make 'em work every time from the 25. If he can make field goals, icing on the cake!

Between now and 8/29 he’s got to find at least an extra 5 yards for college kickoffs to reach at least the goal line(40 yd line vs 35 yd line kickoff spot).High Schools call automatic touchbacks with ball crossing goal line either on the fly or on the ground.
