Like many of his teammates, Ben Castellano eagerly anticipated his senior football season at Woodgrove. Describing the 2018 Wolverines as the best team we've had, Castellano said back in the summer that "we could go to states, easily."
On Saturday afternoon at Christiansburg High School, Castellano produced a clutch touchdown reception in overtime to help lift Woodgrove to a thrilling 26-23 win against previously undefeated Blacksburg in the Virginia Class 4 state semifinals.
After Blacksburg converted a field goal on the first possession of overtime, Castellano hauled in a 5-yard touchdown pass from senior Graham Walker on third and goal to advance the Wolverines to the state final for the first time in program history.
Coach Mike Skinner will guide Woodgrove (10-2) into the Virginia Class 4 state championship game Dec. 8 against Lake Taylor (13-1), a 35-31 winner versus Eastern View in Saturday's other semifinal game. The title game is set to kick off at 4:30 p.m. at Liberty University in Lynchburg.
Winners of nine consecutive games, the Region 4C champion Wolverines once again started strong in their semifinal victory.
A pair of run-dominated 80-yard touchdown drives on their only two possessions of the first half gave Woodgrove a 14-6 lead at halftime. Walker connected with freshman Price Williams for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter and junior KJ Lewis scored on an 8-yard run in the second quarter.
With the Wolverine offensive line paving the way, Lewis, Walker and Williams combined for more than 230 rushing yards on 50-plus carries.
After Blacksburg pulled within 14-12, Walker and Castellano connected for their first of two touchdowns on Woodgrove's first series of the fourth quarter. Castellano's 12-yard scoring catch put the Wolverines ahead 20-12 with 8:44 left in regulation.
Blacksburg (13-1) responded with a touchdown and two-point conversion less than two minutes later to pull even at 20-20. With the Region 4D champion Bruins having the better opportunities to take the lead in the closing minutes of regulation, the Wolverine defense stood strong to force overtime.
Woodgrove's defense followed by limiting Blacksburg to five yards on three plays in overtime, leading to Chas Selor's 22-yard field goal - his third of the game - to give the Bruins a 23-20 lead.
Following a pair of runs that gained five yards to start Woodgrove's overtime possession, Walker dropped back to pass on third and goal from the Bruins' 5-yard line. Walker rolled to the right before finding Castellano along the right side of the end zone for game-winning touchdown completion.
