BEAT IOWA!

There’s a clear difference between Gilyard when he feels he’s been wronged vs “regular” Gilly. He created his own adversity in the A10 tourney, now he doesn’t have to. He and the team are being disrespected by every pundit there is. He’s a top 3 player in the A-10 when he has motivation. Without it he’s not in the top 10. Show him everything.

I guarantee you the constant disrespect from the media is going to do a lot more to fire Gilly and the team up than them just all being aware of the fact the program hasn’t made it in a decade.
Great post.

Gonna repost from one of my posts way earlier in this thread. I’m putting my marbles on Gilly’s Field Of Dreams Team.

Really cool perspective by TJ on this Iowa podcast. Give it a listen, he breaks down the game if you don’t have Spotify it’s called locked on. TJ interview

Bottom line. Iowa respects your team and its experienced players but you will not contain Iowa or score more points. The BIG 10 has very good defensive teams, lightening quick guards, AND dominant Bigs. With all due respect, Richmond is NOT Purdue, Illinois, Michigan, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Indiana, and Michigan St level. We’ve beaten better teams by double digits the last 10 weeks and that trend will continue tomorrow. No disrespect intended but I’d be surprised it’s within 10 points. Of course that’s just my own opinion as a Hawkeye and fan of college basketball. Hope it’s an exciting and tremendous game with no injuries.

Jay Bilas from ESPN wrote an article picking every game in the tourney. This was what he wrote for our matchup:

Iowa can really score, and the Hawkeyes' defense has greatly improved over the past month, as evidenced by the Big Ten tournament title win against Purdue. Iowa rarely turns the ball over and has a superstar in Keegan Murray, who averages 23.6 points and is one of the most versatile players in the nation. Jordan Bohannon has made close to 80 3s on 38% shooting and is the Big Ten's all-time leader in 3-point shooting.

Richmond has Grant Golden inside and Jacob Gilyard, one of the best defenders and steals guys in the country. Still, Iowa is better and has Murray, a lottery pick.

Winner: Iowa

He gave us one sentence. ONE SENTENCE. Our “paragraph” being a fifth of the size is one thing, but then using the second sentence of our two sentence “paragraph” to say Iowa is better. Does that piss anybody else off? Pin it on the ****ing bulletin board Mooney
From experts, there is so much bulletin board material ii would cover thegreen monster at Fenway. They may be right but this type of thing happens almost every year. The trendy, best bet pick loses and busts many brackets.

I dont think the key to the game for the Spiders is Gilyard scoring a lot. He will handle the ball amazing, run the offense, never turn it over, and score when the opportinity presents. I think our key is Golden (or Grace or Cayo) getting the ball down low on offense. They arent massive down low, and GG is as skilled a big as they have had this year imo. If they double him, he can pass to cutting Burton or Cayo, or out for a 3. if they dont double, I think he scores often. From the games I saw their low post D was average. I also think we can be aggressive on glass after a low post shot without the threat of them getting fb opportunity.

GG needs a game like he had against Dayton.

On D, Key is Goose not getting into foul trouble. He has the best chance of containing Keegan M. They do not have a true center and hardly look to get the ball low, living on the perimeter, so constant pressure on the ball. Crabtree gave some great minutes against DC on the defensive end. He may be needed.

Chicago, tend to agree that this is a mismatch. I saw Purdue play in person twice in November, and they had 6th and 7th men that would be great talents in the A10. Definitely a distinct difference in overall athleticism and talent generally.

I do give us a chance though. The NCAA is such a unique setting, you fly in, play at 3:00. Iowa team knows they will be the number one story in the US on ESPN tomorrow evening ---- only if the LOSE. Weird sight lines at an arena both teams have likely never played in. hell Keegan may get food poisoning. I definitely would not order room service pizza. Richmond will be playing with house money. A couple of early 3's, the neutral crowd takes interest. A few more threes for RIchmond, crowd really perks up. Gilly picks your pocket at mid court and feeds Burton for a monster jam. The neutral crowd and Spider faithful are going crazy. McCaffery calls a timeout, hyperventilates for a moment, trys to compose himself - but the team sees that he is about to have an accident in his pants and it rubs off. One thing leads to another and BAM - your team is now the TOP sports story in the US, and all the talking heads are pissed off b/c their bracket is busted. But no pressure, you are right, probably will be a mismatch.

Much much crazier things have happened :)

Good post. Iowa gets in trouble when they are roughed up on defense (this has improved), forced to take covered looks, don't force turnovers, and forced to cover quick ball movement on defense after penetration (breakdown, kick and reverse to an open shooter). I'm really curious to see how the game will be called because if it is called close, I think it actually favors us.

I see us going to zone defense more if man defense isn't going well. Then it becomes a matter of identifying shooters and getting rebounds. The Spiders have to control the clock and pace of the game. If you see Iowa comfortable in their offensive sets and not feeling sped up by the defense, it's going to be a long day for Richmond.

Safe travels to those heading to Buffalo and hope we see a great performance by both teams with no injuries.

Bottom line is you're taking great joy at showing up on a significant underdogs board throwing out some bullshit comments about no disrespect BUT...... Don't patronize us, just come out and say you're gonna whip our ass and move on. I'd personally have more respect for you and others like you. In all likelihood you will win but we damn sure aren't backing down.

these previews read just like the previews of all of our previous tournament games. the big conference teams are too good, too big, too fast, etc. we've heard it all before.

and they've been right about half of the time. yet we've already beaten a 5 seed.
and a 4 seed. and a 3 seed. and a 2 seed.

let's play.

Iowa gon whoop that A$$! 🙈🤣🤷🏻‍♂️

Our guys woke-up two-thirds of the way through the Rhode Island game. From that point forward, we all saw something different.
Yes, and not to beat an already dead horse, but this is what hawk fans have seen for 6 weeks. A team that’s figured it out. Early season scores and transitive properties aside, this should be a good competitive game throughout and I would predict the hawks coming out on top by somewhere in the neighborhood of 8-10 points, pulling away late. I don’t think predicting the spiders to win in an upset is crazy or out of the question. Regardless of the level competition, having 2 2000 point scorers and the national steals leader is not a small thing, and couple that with the level of experience your team has, there is the potential.

One thing I will say, with having played sports my whole life up to the collegiate level, the “disrespect” factor is only good until the whistle blows and the ball is tossed up. Once the game is going it won’t matter what anyone is saying now whether it be hawk fans or the national media. One group not taking this game lightly is the players and coaches. There is a 20+ year monkey on their backs and only getting to the second weekend will provide relief.

Much respect and best of luck.

I cannot wait till you eat your words herkyjerk, and you will. I would take Gilyard, Burton, and Golden over your guys any day. This particular squad can beat anyone in this country when they are hot, and the iron is heating up.

Anything can happen during March Madness, but with that said, “Molly You in Danger Gurl!” 🤣

I go back to 19-20 season and we beat Wisconsin in Madison Square Garden with practically same team we have
now minus Blake Francis. So it is not like we have not beaten a prominent Big10 team in past few years.

The last odds that I looked at gave the Spiders an 18% chance of winning this game with a final predicted score of 74-68, Iowa. So that said, we would win 18 times if we played 100 times. There's 1 chance in 5. Our best chance for that one win is in game 1 in my opinion. They have a history of crapping the bed, we have a history of hanging around. As disappointed as we have been recently, I believe we've been in the sweet 16 more recently than them. We've got a chance, I'm good with that. Go Spiders.

Love these corn growers saying “y’all suck and we gonna whip yo ass, but we respect you”. 🙄

Iowa has the best player on the court. In the ncaa Tournament that means a lot. At any rate, safe travels and no injuries. I won’t wish you luck.

Yes, making the NCAA's on a regular basis is something that is very critical to our hoops program and has been a big failure last ten years for our coach. If you have a couple hundred hours you could read post on this board about. We have a small contingent of fans that are OK with competing, which includes a billionaire friend of the coach. Then we have a bunch that actually think we should be dancing more often and understand the value on recruiting, morale, winning, and as you indicate overall visibility of the school. Thanks for making our point. Wild week here in spidernation for sure.
Richmond should strive to be Gonzaga. I would have no idea that Gonzaga University even existed if not for their basketball program. I'm 57 years old, so maybe that is why I can remember Richmond in the NCAA's because I followed college basketball much more closely 10 years ago and beyond, but not so much the past several years, other then the past couple with Iowa. I am much more a college football fan.

Interesting side note. I know of one Iowan that is a UR MBB season ticket holder. He's wearing Black and Gold tomorrow.

Probably only guy in the country with connection like that to the two programs.

Please revoke this fans message board access and take his season tickets. Thanks

The last time Iowa won the Big10 championship in 2006, they were a 3 seed and guess what happened in Round 1.
LOST TO 14 SEED NORTHWESTERN STATE.

I guess we will hear, “oh but that team wasnt that good and this team is sooo much better.”
And “but we have never had a team like this”.
As if their fans werent just as confident in their team then.

Crazy how cocky they are with history like that. They have a long history of getting upset as a high seed, and the Spiders have maybe the best history of upsetting high seeds. Spiders are 3-0 against 5 seeds for God’ sake.

Man, you would think they would be more humble just for superstition and karma.

ESPN’s Streak for the cash has this breakdown right now:

Richmond: 0.3%
iowa: 99.7%

3 in every thousand people is picking us to win.

Guys, if you’re really the best class ever, this is the time to prove it. Show us what you got

Read a lot of this thread but not all of it … lol it still took me an hour I think 😀. Great info and appreciate the limited smack talk and more basketball talk.

My take is that Richmond will need to score about 75-80 to win this thing. I think Keegan M will be in the 30s himself for Iowa. Now if he gets in foul trouble, then it could be game on (and a little bit of nervous time for Iowa). If Iowa is off on their three point shooting, it is another path for Richmond. Iowa does rely on that and Murray post ups and transition buckets, so if you limit those three aspects of Iowas offense you could turn it into a rock fight game and have a really decent shot at the win.

On the other hand if Iowa is clicking on all cylinders like they have recently they can score 80-90 and I don’t think the Spiders are built for that type of game.

Good luck but not too much 😃. If you pull the upset I hope you keep it rolling.

Not too surpised that is the case after every expert has picked them to win. The minions just follow the “experts”. What % of those people actually watched a Spider game this season, lol. And I bet they are picked in 80% of the brackets to win the next round too.

We can score. You should hope you make a lot of 3’s. That seems to be your predominant scoring option. Hot streaks always come to an end, and it most often happens when there is the most pressure. Your team is just about due to launch a dud.
