Andre Wesson - 2016 Offer

Glad to hear we are still actively recruiting. We need someone who can play the 4 or 5 for the last spot in this class.

There are some interesting players that have recently entered the transfer market. Don't we still have an open scholie?

A transfer is unlikely. The Spiders are still recruiting a big to fill the remaining schollie. OSC

If it is a graduate transfer then I could see it. We haven't done that before though. Junior transfers aren't great because you only get 1 year of play for 2 years of scholarship. Sophomore transfer would mean joining our current freshmen class, which would make it a 6 person class. That is far from ideal. A freshmen transfer would join our 2016 class, so it could work. I am not sure what freshmen are available though, I would rather fill our spots before the summer transfer season begins.

Check out mixtape of Andre; apparently Wisconsin is also interested in him. Read that Andre is the best unsigned player in Ohio. OSC

Another video featuring Andre; really would like to see him be a Spider. OSC

We have 2 open slots to fill yet. We had 1 remaining and of course with Josh no longer on the team, his slot is open. And that is of course assuming we don't lose any of our own through transfer. We have been good on the transfer market recently with Wood and TJ, would like to see us go there again and grab an established player who would fit our system.

I like what I see from this Andre kid, but we really need to home in on another quality big man, someone who is at least 6'8" and a formidable inside presence both offensively and defensively. We will be losing our 3 best defenders next year (DT, TD, and TA) and need to re-load on the front line. I don't really care if he is a HS player or a transfer. I'm secretly hoping some Big Aussie on his way to St. Mary's gets on the wrong plane and ends up in RVA.

We weren't in his top 3 because we hadn't offered at that point...we just offered Tuesday night.

Also just noticed Andre's brother Kaleb is a 2017 well-regarded big man who's committed to Ohio State. Their dad played there.

things can change, but it's going to be tough if he's "definitely going to commit either during or the end of break". so in the next 3 weeks. we're late to the party here.

Sure, but at least he saw fit to mention us as showing interest last month. Maybe we're the bigger offer he's been holding out for, as long as Wisconsin doesn't extend one.

We have needs at every position except the 2 guard positions right now. The 4 and 5 positions are obviously the greatest need areas. Will not be devastated if we don't land this guy, sounds like he could be a player at the 3 though.

Does anyone know if the early-signing period is over yet (What are the dates)? Do we now need to wait until the Spring to sign a guy like this, or is there still time?
If we can land a 6-6 guy who can play great defense, and can block shots and rebound, I am not that concerned about waiting for a guy who is over 6-8. Dayton proved last season that 6-6 guys, who can play, are also big enough to win in the A-10.

Early signing period ended almost a month ago...it only lasts a week. Have to wait until mid-April to sign anybody now.

Highlights - Andre is #5. His brother Kaleb is the center making some nice outside shots. OSC

+1 Spider23! Agree that getting #32 (Kaleb the Center) and #5 (Andre Wesson) could be a great recruiting move by our coaching staff. Our staff has to be impressed by Kaleb's 3-point shooting too, a quality that we love in our "bigs." These two sets of brothers would provide an excellent inside "presence," for a few years. I hope we can get it started, by adding Andre, in the spring. Ulla1, thanks for posting the great video of Andre and Kaleb, doing their thing.

For the third time in this thread, Kaleb is already committed to Ohio State. Stop dreaming. ;)

How many of this type of player have we seen in the past. Very athletic, in a highlight film playing against high school players. Trey and Deon come to mind. It's as important to get a kid who is a gym rat, wants and is willing to work at his skills. Some of these guys can 'star' in high school without a lot of effort but at the college level they are very average. When I was still sneaking into the gym to play at UR players like Bob McCurdy, Johnny Newman, John Schweitz were there alone all the time, working, working, working. I don't know how you recruit that but it probably matters at least as much as natural talent.

The best thing I have heard said about AW is that he "dominated" on the defensive end (see above). We should not lose sight of the fact that we will likely be losing our top 3 DEFENSIVE players, who are all seniors. Could it be important to add at least one more strong defender to this class, given that our three recruits, so far, are known more for their excellent offense than defense? I will gladly trade great offense for some defense, but it would be very helpful to have guys we can use in "offensive/defensive" sub patterns (near the end of games), and it is really helpful to a team to have one or two "defensive stoppers." Who are likely to be our "defensive stoppers" in 2017? Who would you nominate as our next best non-senior defenders on this squad? I might nominate Khwan, DeMonte, and Grant, (and maybe Marshall?), but I don't believe we yet have a proven "world-class" defender beyond our three seniors...If AW is truly a shut-down defender, that skill would likely add significant value.

I would not put MW in with defensive discussion. Kwan is probably best non senior defender.

Might add that Jesse is going to be a very good defender. He is quite mobile on defense and is always looking to make a steal or grab a rebound. Also, don't give up on Marshall Wood. He is extremely talented, athletic, quick feet, long arms and smart. IMHO, he will be an outstanding defender. In fact, Coach Mooney has said as much. OSC
