Just caught the end of the discussion about Alonzo on Spider Sportsline, and it sounds like he will have surgery for a broken bone around his eye tomorrow and likely will be out until late February or early March. Sounds like he will miss at least 5-6 games, maybe more.

Get well big fella. I guess we already put ourselves out of contention losing the last two, this is just icing on the proverbial cake. The only problem is the cake is made of something I'd rather not eat.

Will be a tough road ahead without Alonzo, feel bad for him, as he was starting to come on strong. So instead of losing all our games by less than 6, let's see what happens. We are going to attacked even more on the boards and any match ups with bigger teams will be problematic. Our rebounding will probably get worse, if that's possible. How many D1 teams are there?

I wonder if all the local TV stations will do special reports about his injury and how heartbreaking it is? No, I guess that's reserved for the other team in town.

Get well, Zo!

Five or six games pretty much does it for this year for ANO. I would rather they keep him out instead of risk coming back too soon for a couple of probably meaningless games.

We will need him in Brooklyn.

Great young man. Great player. Work hard. Study hard. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Tough news considering how well Zo had been playing lately. Get well Zo

Considering all the other fouls called Sunday, it really is pretty remarkable that no foul was called on Alonzo's injury.

The refs even went to video to review it. I've seen many a games where a guy gets a technical and doesn't even make contact with the head. Alonzo got a concussion and an orbital eye fracture that requires surgery and no technical.

On another note, this stinks. ANO has been playing really well.

VCU fan here. A lot of you guys showed love and respect when we lost Bri, so just want to let you all know how much respect I have for ANO. I've thought that guy was a major force since seeing him early on in his career (judging by this forum at times sometimes I wondered if I liked him more than some Spider fans).

Anyway, I just see losses like ours with Bri (not to mention Treveon's injury), Jack Gibbs for Davidson, Justin Anderson at UVA and you guys losing ANO and it just reminds me how much luck is involved in this stuff.

Luckily Alonzo has another year to come back strong and I certainly think he has a big senior year ahead of him. I wish him the best of luck.

Natty, thanks for the love, we are missing Fore also (a very promising FR)

As for the Richmond television stations coverage of the possible season ending injury to our player expect crickets chirping. Don't we realize as far as the local media is concerned UR basketball does not exist.

A concussion and an orbital bone fracture! There was not so much as a foul called! The Rhode Island player should have been hit with a foul and he should have been tossed!

^^Most all sports media guys mentioned the injury to Alonzo tonight.

Your act is really tired.

JOC has written about it, Big Al talked about it haven't heard others so cannot say if they talked about it.

It was all over Twitter last night from local and national guys.

Although I missed the hit, saw him go down. My first thought was his nose on the floor.

But am I right that there were 58 fouls, but a skull fracture ain't one?

as it was, the game was almost unwatchable the way the refs called everything. I actually agreed with no call there. not like the URI guy through the elbow with intent. sometimes stuff happens in basketball. it's a tough game.
awful luck for ANO. he's been great, and will have a big senior year. his shooting has improved so much this year on top of his defensive efforts. he'll be greatly missed.

Huge loss, I hope he can make it back for Brooklyn, I reckon we shall see. Personally, I'm more worried about the concussion than the fractured orbital, you never know how head injuries are going to go.

Assuming that he will recover 100%, he should be primed for an A10 DPOY nod next year, and has a really good shot at breaking the all-time UR career blocks record.

Also appreciate the props Zo is getting from the VCU fans on here, although it was frustrating to watch NBC12 sports the night before last and listen to the talking head totally butcher the pronunciation of Zo's name, while the local media seem to have no problems with the pronunciation of some of the more "exotic" names of the VCU players. I don't get it...

If I was the SID I would immediately send a pronunciation break down to all media contacts. But come on, they got it right when he was getting press for being in a fight!

It's pronounced exactly the way you would think it should be pronounced. The fact that any sports reporters whose job it is to cover local teams can't pronounce it is embarrassing.

How can we expect the media to get things right when we spell his first name "Alzonzo" in our pronunciation guides in game notes all season?

heck, one of our own posters calls him Adoda ... and no, the A and O aren't next to each other on the keyboard. maybe he's using voice recognition.

Really unfortunate. He was averaging 11 points and 6 rebounds over his last 5 games. Our defense and rebounding are much worse without him, and we will miss his offensive production as well. He was starting to get aggressive on offense. I hope he can play in Brooklyn, but if not I hope he starts next year where he left off this year.

Pray for a quick and complete recovery. Head injuries are tough to deal with. Zo is one of my favorite players. We will miss him on the court. His defense has been very good and he was coming into his own on offense.

The orbital bones are very very thin and if he were my son I 'd have him sit out . I haven't read if it was an orbital floor fracture or not , but regardless, Id have him sit.

Coaches show last night say the fracture was very small for what that is worth and CM made it sound like he would be back this season, again for what that is worth.

We will see.

I got an alert on it on my phone from my TheScore App. The only times (other than scores) that I hear anything about UR from that app is when Ced got injured, and now this.

ZO might be ready physically but I worry that he won't be there mentally. He's not the most aggressive player anyway and the recent injury might even reduce his desire to get in there and bang for space or rebounds. Hope I'm wrong.

No reason to rush him back before the A10 tourney.

Realistically - we have very little shot at a meaningful post-season, so why risk the extra injury.

I say keep him out until the UMASS or SLU game so that he can get some minutes before the tourney, but until then - just let him heal.

If we had a chance at some NCAA bid, it would be totally different. I would say give him a mask, and play him limited minutes ASAP. But since that is not the case, we really have nothing to gain and everything to lose by playing him too early.

Trap, I agree with you. Just let him heal and get his rest until the last home game with SLU. I would say don't play him at all the rest of the year, but the A-10 is so weak this year that anyone can win the tournament. I saw Dayton and SLU play last night and neither team is good. If UR gets in top 8 they have a chance of winning the A-10.

The league really is not impressive. There are a lot of teams at about the same level. I guess our odds on a neutral court depend upon which is greater -- the drop off we experience playing somewhere other than the Robins Center, or the benefit we get from not having to play teams on their home courts.

A-10 Tournament crowds are sparse after the first day anyway. When it was in Atlantic City most of the crowd was from Philly, especially Temple. I can't imagine a big crowd there for any one team this year. With Dayton, VCU and Davidson as favorites, it won't be very well attended by the northeast folks. The 2 or 3 hundred people in Rhode Island may show. All in all it should be a fairly neutral environment. We should fly the guys there once a week for shooting practice.:)

As far as calling a foul, I don't think there was much option, the refs quite simply missed it. I think reviewing the video only results in a call if it's a flagrant or technical, but not a PF, and from the replay i saw, it didn't look intentional.

still, it sucks for ANO. He has been playing the role I think everyone expected of him recently, and having him out will demonstrate how little depth we actually have at 4/5.

i'd like to see him return for the A10 tournament, I still think we can play with anyone in the league, so maybe we get lucky and pull a fast one.

I'm hoping that his surgery went as expected and successfully. Has anyone heard how he is doing? I know the trainer mentioned on the radio show that he would be recovering for a few days before getting up and around again. Hopefully the recovery process will go well for Alonzo.
