2025 Portal Tracker

Yeah Johnston averaged 3 assists per game last season which isn't nothing but I view him as a gunner coming in here.
good shooter and maybe we'll want him to be a gunner, but he only averaged 9.5 shots per game the last 2 years. that's no where near the volume of someone like Jordan King. more in line with Delonnie, Dusan or Tyne.

And I think to your point, Richardson is mostly referred to as a PG or CG, so yet another guy we have who can run point if needed.

Originally I was pretty high on Richardson bc it was reported he was a PG, and I envisioned a big backcourt finally and a point forward type. But yeah I think he's more combo guard. and in reality for us that means a 3, more in Dji mold slasher, some ball handling, non shooter, hopefully D. because he's a 26% 3 pt shooter, and just a 60% FT shooter over 2 full hs seasons. Better for us if he's that point forward distributor. the shooting is a little alarming for high school. Mooney will tell us he's a great shooter just like last year was supposed to be. I guess we look good in practice against each other. Then came ECU scrimmage (credit 23).

This guy from Penn just entered the portal. More of a traditional forward type, so maybe not a fit, but nice numbers and he scored double digits at vcu and against St. Joe's this year. Grad transfer.

looks like just 1 of the hundreds of players with no eligibility who entered portal in hopes of something happening with courts, settlement, or just the fact that there is no governing body for rules or eligibility and a school will likely just take & play them.

btw isn't today technically the last day to get in portal? lol. if someone wanted to transfer in August who is going to say no.

Schieffelin said the same thing...out of eligibility and aiming to be done and go pro, but was advised to enter the portal just in case.

And yeah, today is the last day of regular portal entry...but we'll see how many exceptions there end up being. Women's portal closes tomorrow.

Another guy with a Spider history who should be done...Daeshon Shepherd has entered the portal despite having played four countable seasons at La Salle. We recruited him out of high school and then again last year when he portaled before opting to return to La Salle.

Not very good shooting at HS level for a guard for Richardson. Certainly not going to get easier looks at A10 level, especially with our offense. Great to see that sources have us at bottom of A10 though!! Moon will like that as it gives him easy runway to overachieve.

G Johnston
G Thomas (as of now).
G/wing ? Someone with size who can shoot
F Daughtry
Big Walz

To be really good, I just think we still need to add a guard or wing who can shoot. That spot should be wide open. The freshmen, Tyne, Tanner, AP, or a portal guy? Who wants it? And, it could be 2 spots open because Thomas might not start.
Unless Mooney changes his offense we will still smell with Big Walz in there.
I will go to my grave believing we'd have been better to let Neskovich facilitate the offense last year for the foul line. And sight unseen I believe we'll be better next year with Daughtry there rather than Walz.

Your incessant posting of a negative and the fact that other posters find it amusing.
It seems to me we see fewer and fewer new members on this site. Not everyone
wants to see a negative.
We just finished a 8-22 season. What else is there besides negatives to incessantly post about? The men’s basketball team made the University I love look like a joke all season. Knowing that nobody in the administration or coaching staff feels any pressure as a result of that really pisses me off.

Seriously, it wasn't the laugher of a season with 8 wins or the totally pathetic record against our crosstown rival that keeps new posters and fan interest away it's ME apparently. Didn't realize I was so powerful.

Well, if you had been paying attention, he has had that avatar long before the past season even started.

Back to topic, the more I think about it, the more I'd lean towards using the last spot for a developmental big man. I understand and respect the opinions that we should get best player available regardless of position, but I simply do not think we are one player away.

I would take my medicine this coming year and (1) leave opportunity for one of the freshman to step forward -- best guy plays the most; and (2) plan a little for the future with a big man. We'll lose two after this year, and if we think it is hard bringing in one big man in the portal, I think math says it is twice as hard to bring in two. I think finding another seasoned vet that will block the freshman just prolongs the mediocrity, and prevents us from truly seeing if our young guys can play.

For those that say that you bring someone in and let the freshmen beat them out, I would normally probably agree with you, except that (1) I truly don't know the impact that NIL $$ has in attracting players, and if player agents are paying attention to what coaches say are going to play a guy who transfers in and then doesn't, potentially impacting relationships moving forward (think, GWIII); and (2) I don't really trust Mooney to do play a young guy over a more experienced guy anyway, regardless of whether they deserve it. Last year was an example, but I don't think the only one. The main one I could think of was Shawn'Dre Jones, who looked very capable in tiny bits and pieces but couldn't get any run at all until Ced got hurt, and turns out he was very capable and could have been spelling Ced and KA the whole time.

My two cents.

What good, developmental or not, big hasn't signed with someone already? And what big still out there wants to come here with 2 other bigs to compete with? Next year, when our big spot is wide open, we should be a very attractive spot for an experienced big.

I'd agree with you if this were five years ago. But since guys are moving around every year, we have to put together the best team possible for this year. If we are in a situation where we have to "take our medicine" two years in a row in the NIL era, that's an indictment on the coaching staff and tells me they are not capable of competing in this new format.

Eli DeLaurier. it hasn't worked out in 2 years at Providence. 2 years left ... or who knows these days?
6'10" 220 from Shipman VA (Miller School)
sales pitch is we have 2 centers ... just like every school you'll talk to. they're ok. there's no set hierachy. if you beat out both, you're the starter. if you beat out one you're playing 15 mpg. if you beat out none, you're on the bench like you should be ... but they both graduate so you're in great shape the following year.
we could do a lot worse. so could he.

How about Soulis? He went into the portal, but maybe the grass isn’t greener.

I thought Beagle would be the one to leave and still surprised he didn’t. I also can’t see an experienced big coming and fitting into Mooney’s scheme in year one. I agree with @kneepadmckinney on this one.

As far as whether this staff can adapt to the new NIL world, I don’t need any further data. Answer is no. The path to success is going to be the same “traditional” path with under the radar types and development. Problem is that the success rate has been very low. Seems like UR should be able to get better high school recruits since the majority of the teams are building from the portal, but so far that hasn’t proved to be the case.

Again like kneepad said, got to get something out of the freshmen and hope you can hold onto them if they are A10 level talent.

Agree that we should be able to make some inroads in HS recruiting, since the big schools are pretty much getting out of that business. Problem is that we weren't great at it before, so I don't know how good we will be now. Plus, we also should be able to grab proven college players in the portal ourselves. Feels like we ought to be able to land at least one HS recruit each year who can play and contribute immediately. He may transfer after that, but it's the game we need to play.

yeah, I agree. we should certainly be checking in with him on the interest he's receiving. let him know the door's still open ... but won't be for long if someone commits.
"Hey Ryan, looks like you have very little interest in the portal, and u aren't good enough to beat out Walz and Beagle.....but we'll take u back"??? Why?

Is he any good though? I said what "good" big. Hopefully, we llearned our lesson with GW3. And, Kwesi.
