Matt Becht - Southern NH Transfer - Visit ~4/13

as well as our offense works, it doesn't allow Roche the freedom to work for open shots like I remember from his Citadel highlights. maybe it would work more with inside/out sets. we may or may not do more of that with Walz/Beagle. I'm not betting on it though.

as for being a "liability", I've never felt that. I think he plays pretty good defense with high effort.
Definitely not a liability. And, 2 years ago, he was 3.6-9.4 from 3 per 40 minutes for us, and the year before at The Citadel he was 3.9-9.9 from 3 per 40 minutes. So, this talk about he got way more shots and looks when in there at The Citadel than here is just not accurate.

I agree in one regard and disagree in another.

Agree that he needs to utilize the dribble more effectively.
Disagree on dribble-drive.

I think he needs to be able to use the dribble to get more open on 3s. Pump-fake, one dribble to the side, drill a 3. Curl around a screen, fake a 3 and dribble into space for his 3PA. That kind of thing.

The guy from Oakland is my model for optimal use of Roche. That guy never took any 2s and shot an extremely high volume of 3s, from a variety of looks. It was immensely effective because he got a wide variety of looks and they knew what he wanted to do and still had issues stopping it. And it really widens the court when you have a guy who has that kind of gravity to draw his own and help defenders to him at the 3 point line and beyond.

Any 2s Roche takes should be layups off back cuts. I want zero part of any 12-18 foot jumpers, except in emergency situations.
A fair clarification and I agree.

and yet of the 20 targets we have left, 3 took 15 or fewer 3's and 6 others had 3 point shooting percentages in the 20's.
I'm pretty confident we have contacted more guys than you think, and does your post above mean 11 of the 20 were good from 3? And, don't forget Harris became a key piece last year and Bigs was in the 20s 2 years ago.

Harris was a perfect role player last year, bought into whatever was asked of him, which was defense, rebounding and corner 3s. Hopefully there are guys like that each year, but who knows what kind of role any kid is looking for as a transfer. I'm fairly confident that our staff is laying out that kind of situation for transfers who aren't expected to be starters, like Harris. You obviously can't promise 5 returnees and multiple transfers that they'll all start and be 25-30 mpg guys but can promise them a shot at proving they belong in the rotation of a team expecting to win in the A10.

I expect most of the role player guys are guys like Harris, one year transfers looking to move up for a final year. Finding the glue guy who can easily translate his lower level stats - even if modest numbers - is an interesting aspect of the portal.

Also, i agree it's not Roche's shooting numbers that worry me at all, it's his opportunity. If he's healthy this coming year, they just have to let him shoot away, we need scoring badly.

I'm going off MD's google sheet, which is all we have.
currently 66 guys we know we reached out to. I'm sure there are a few others.
of the 66, we landed Beagle. 45 committed elsewhere. 20 remain uncommitted.

11 of those 20 we're fine from 3.
Becht was by far the best at 44.8% ... with the caveat that it was in D2.
the other 10 range from 32.3% to 37.4%.

I know for a fact that we are in touch with players and have had more visits than the google sheet would suggest.

good to hear. crazy to me that we reached out to this many as it is. but I guess that's you have to do it in the portal.

if u subscribe to the theory all portal visits have offers then he turned us down

Right, was thinking that. That seemed to be the assumption - that in this portal speed dating model a player only visits if there is an offer. Not sure if that is accurate, but seems like it would be. Who knows what goes on, but could be he was looking for more guaranteed playing time - based on his landing spot.

says we offered.

"One of the top players in D-II last season for Southern New Hampshire, Becht had offers from Oakland, Richmond, Tennessee Chattanooga, and Oral Roberts, among others.

In the portal, he had high-majors showing interest. Maryland, UCLA, Virginia Tech, DePaul, and Temple were all talking to him."

tough pill to swallow, losing out to Merrimack. guessing he felt more comfortable with his role there.
I'm biased, but I can't imagine being offered and visiting UR and not falling in love with it. but you have to figure out where you fit in. time isn't guaranteed. might not want to risk being a role player in your final year.

There’s zero chance we were offering him anything close to the same PT Merrimack is, or else he’d be here. That says to me that we didn’t really miss out.

my understanding is that coaches rarely if ever offer guaranteed playing time.

right now, we have one guard (Hunt) who's a pretty sure starter. Tyne is promising but he didn't do enough to lock anything up. and Roche is hurt. this should be a very attractive spot for a transfer guard.

there's no reason we wouldn't have offered Becht the opportunity to compete for a starting spot. that's standard and about the best a player can hope for. he chose Merrimack.

btw ... Merrimack has landed 2 other transfers. another D2 kid, and a D3 kid. they did win 21 games last year, but this is about as low level a D1 conference as it gets.

Continue to think the a jump from d-2 to an A-10 team is a pretty big leap. I think Becht may have felt that too. He can go to Merrimack and probably get big minutes, whereas here, he is more likely in a Roche like situation. Not surprising he went with the better fit.

Players look at rosters and know who is gone and who is coming back. He will likely be starting at Merrimack, and is probably not worried about who they might pick up after after he signs. If he chose here or a few other schools, he has fewer guarantees and those schools could still have a better chance than Merrimack of landing someone better after he signs, lowering his playing time more.

All these guys don't want the same thing. My guess is the most important thing for Becht was being a starter with lots of playing time on a D1 team that has a chance of making the dance. Maybe he looked at the guy from Oakland last year and said "that could be me".

Choosing Merrimack over Richmond is the same decision we hope many of the players we are recruiting make when they get offers from P6 schools. Choose the school that is the best fit for you and not necessarily the one that is playing at the highest level. Likely a good, mature decision by Becht.

Merrimack has done well for not being in D1 very long. Remember they won the NEC tourney a couple years ago but weren't allowed to go. FDU goes instead and knocks off Purdue and the coach gets Iona job as result.

we can follow how Becht does, always interesting to see how former recruits/players do.

but i don't really see this as a roster analysis deal for Becht, especially because we have legit opening at his spot. that would have been 1 of the draws for UR. we're trying to get someone at that position aren't we. plus Roche may or may not be ready, tho I expect he will be. It was probably something else on his part or ours.

and we might have the Glou coming in too!

Or maybe he really wants to play in the NCAA tourney - and saw Merrimack as the best option to make that happen. They lost in NEC finals last year. Won the year before, but couldn't go. SO maybe he sees them as a path to the tourney that he can be a big piece of.
