2025 Baseball Season

We do have a H2H tiebreaker over Dayton but not Fordham, so I guess those two teams are effectively both two games up on us (unless more teams get involved in that potential tie and the breakers get more complicated).

But yeah, Dayton finishing up against cellar-dweller Bona gives them the easiest path to stay ahead of us. Fordham with the tough finish against Mason.

Spiders down 3–0 to Towson in the middle of the fourth. Spiders have only managed one hit so far, though they did load the bases with two outs in the fourth thanks to a walk, their lone single, and an error, but Pacheco struck out to end the Spider threat.

Smith pitched the first three innings for the Spiders. He's only given up 4 hits so far, but two of them been homers representing all three of Towson's runs. Reinke now on.

Spiders managed to tie it up at 6 with four runs in the seventh including a 3-run shot from O’Brien, but Towson got one in the bottom of the inning and held on for the 7–6 win.

Gameday! The Spiders (29-17, 10-14 Atlantic 10) head across town to The Diamond to take on VCU (14-34, 7-17) in the penultimate A10 series of the season. This is it: sweep this series or the season is likely over. Here are the game times and probable starters; all games should be able to stream on ESPN+:

  • Friday, 6PM ET: Jackson Hinchliffe (1-1, 25 IP, 3.96 ERA, 1.76 WHIP, 17 K / 15 BB, .290 BAA)
  • Saturday, 2PM: Esteban Rodriguez (2-4, 47.2 IP, 4.91 ERA, 1.47 WHIP, 37 K / 23 BB, .257 BAA)
  • Sunday, 1PM: Joey Giordano (2-0, 11 IP, 1.64 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 8 K / 5 BB, .237 BAA)
VCU is on a five game skid at the moment, including four 1-run losses to UVA (8-9) and getting swept last weekend at St. Bonaventure (9-10, 16-17, and 10-11). They also dropped their mid-week contest to Old Dominion on Tuesday, 2-8. Despite putting up a lot of runs last weekend, the Rams have been one of the A10's most sluggish offenses this season, with a team slash line overall of .253/.367/.383, with a slightly improved A10 slash line of .269/.379/.410. The bat to watch out for in their lineup is Freshman Catcher Jacob Lee, who in conference play has an OPS over 1.000 and has smashed 9 home runs and collected 31 RBIs. On the season, his slash line is .277/.374/.576. He has also picked up some accolades, winning A10 Rookie of the Week on 4/28 and was also named to D1 Baseballs Top 50 catchers in the nation (36). He currently has scored 9 runs in the Ram's last 8 games, and has a hit in and a hit in 8 of their last 9.

Pitching-wise, VCU has three impressive arms, including Owen Tappy, who I do expect to be tonight's starter based on recent A10 series. He is a top 10 A10 arm in ERA (4.19) on the season and has only walked 10 batters all season, but in his last two starts he has allowed 12 earned runs. He can go deep into games, pitching 7+ innings in three of his last four starts, which should allow VCU's two stellar bullpen arms (Zachary Peters and Elijah Coston) to feature in the remaining two games. Peters sports a 3.24 ERA and .209 BAA on the season, in 16 appearances across 33.1 innings. His 4 saves lead the team, and he has notched up 41 strikeouts. Coston has also made 16 appearances for the Rams, and has a 3.52 ERA and .184 BAA.

Will be scoreboard watching today since we have the night game. As has mentioned prior on this forum, we need to be pulling for Saint Joseph's against GW (first game at 3PM today).

Spiders get the 8–2 win, giving up only 5 hits for the game and VCU's only runs coming on a homer in the 8th. Hinchliffe went 5 innings, Gruber went 3, and Bilka closed it out. Jaffe homered in the 1st and Pacheco homered in the 9th to book-end the scoring, with the Spiders taking advantage of four VCU errors to get some unearned runs. Tappy went 7 innings for VCU with Dressler pitching the final 2.

St. Joe's rolled over GW this afternoon, 12–4, helping our cause, while Fordham beat Dayton, 6–5.

GW, Dayton, and Fordham are now all tied at 12–13 taking up the 6th through 8th spots, with the Spiders just one game back in 9th.

So far so good today...Spiders leading VCU 6–3 heading into the 7th. E-Rod has pitched all 6 innings so far. O'Brien has a 2-run double and a 2-run homer to lead the Spiders. Lee has driven in all three of VCU's runs with a 2-run homer and a double, as VCU has managed only five hits total so far.

GW is trailing St. Joe's 8–5 in the 8th, while Fordham leads Dayton 3–2 in the 7th.

Phew, Bilka came on for the 8th and VCU loaded the bases with two outs, but Aoki stuck with him and he got a groundout to end the inning. 3 more outs to go!

GW gets a couple in the 9th but it's not enough and they fall to St. Joe's, 9–7. Meanwhile, Fordham tacks on three runs in the 8th to make it 6–2 heading to the 9th.

If that result holds, Fordham would be in sole possession of 6th at 13–13 and then UR, GW, and Dayton all tied for 7th at 12–14. (If Dayton comes back to win, just flip Dayton up to 6th and Fordham down into the 7th-place tie.)

Dayton has the easiest final series, hosting Bona, while the rest all of have tough finishes vs teams at the top of the A-10 standings. Really want the win tomorrow to sweep the Rams.

Edit: Dayton plates two in the 9th, but Fordham takes the 6–4 win.

If we keep winning have to believe we will be in.

Up 8-3 end of 5. Announcer convinced Spiders got benefit of bad call allowed run to score on SAC fly, would have been 3rd out, next hitter got 3 run HR. I disagree, yes was close but appeared Bernstein just caught tip of home plate.

Have a lone UR fan behind home plate working hard to distract vcu pitchers. Check him out.

That guy is hilarious. But what's with the camera angle? Looks like it is sitting on the ground in centerfield or something.

Now 13-3, 2 out runner on 1st. If can hold vcu next at bat, game over 10 run lead.

14–3 Spiders heading to the 7th. Assuming we don’t collapse, combined with GW beating St. Joe’s and Dayton beating Fordham, it’s gonna be four teams tied at 13–14 for the final two spots heading into the final weekend.

Just get this inning over. You can't walk guys with a 15-run lead.

And then he walks another guy. JFC, need to get outs and end this game this inning.

And another walk forces in a run. Get this guy out of there before he screws everything up.

Finally, the third out, 18-6 final. We walked five guys in that inning. I don't care if we had a 15-run lead, that's inexcusable.

Spiders just walked in a run, still 18-4, vcu needs 5 more. UR changing pitchers.

Finally. struck out 3rd out, end 18-6 with bases loaded. 4 way tie for last spot, next week very interesting.

Seems like it’s probably going to require at least two wins next weekend, quite possibly a sweep. Have to figure Dayton will take at least two from Bona, and both Fordham and GW swept us in our meetings.

Agreed, SF! Somewhat in our favor, Fordham and GW also have tough final A10 series. The former is heading to George Mason, who are going to be playing for the 1 seed. GW is heading to St Louis, who have clinched a conference tournament appearance already, but are currently tangled up in the 3,4,5 seeds with two other 16-11 teams.

Unfortunately, Davidson is right up there with Mason and SLU. All we can do is play the games in front of us one at a time and see how everything else shakes out. We dug ourselves a pretty big hole in conference play but are closing strong.

Gotta win 2 from Davidson series, 3 would be ideal.

At this point - just get into the championship round, and then anything can happen.

Pitching appears to have come back around a bit here lately. Let's hope we can find three more wins somehow. And when's the last time we swept the smelly lambs at The Diamond, anyway?

Gameday! #OperationChapelHillRegional, let's win 8 of our next 9. Richmond (32-17, 13-14) hosts Davidson (23-26, 16-11) starting today; early series I guess to give teams that clinch Conference tournament more time to rest, as that starts Tuesday. Game times and probable starters (all games on ESPN+):
  • Thursday, 2PM: Jackson Hinchliffe (30 IP, 2-1, 3.30 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, 19 K / 17 BB, .270 BAA)
  • Friday, 2PM: Esteban Rodriguez (54.2 IP, 3-4, 4.77 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 40 K / 25 BB, .249 BAA)
  • Saturday, Noon: Joey Giordano (14.1 IP, 2-0, 3.14 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, 10 K / 7 BB, .235 BAA)
I'll keep it simple on the scouting: Davidson is one of the best offensive teams in the conference, and has one of the worst pitching. Team A10 slash line of .331/.450/.614, have scored 48 more runs than every other team in the conference, league-leading 66 home runs in A10 play.

Their top three hitters are all A10 POY candidates, and have all taken A-10 Player of the Week honors once. It will be interesting as on our side Brady O'Brien is a serious A10 POY candidate, so there will be four of the top six or seven candidates on the field.

Overall stats:
  • Cider Cannon (Leadoff): .388/.480/.782, 16 HR and 48 RBI, 10 SB
  • Eli Putnam (2nd): .336/.397/.617, 16 HR and 55 RBI (LIVE EDIT as I just watched him go yard off of Hinchliffe), 10 SB
  • Michael O'Shaughnessy (4th): .354/.460/.672, 15 HR, 61 RBI

M1 Update: Hinchliffe let up three straight hits, a single to Cannon (who was then picked off attempting to 2nd), solo homers to Putnam and Torreso. Got O'Shaughnessy to foul out before going Walk, Single, Single, and a strikeout looking to mercifully end the inning.

3-0 Wildcats. Spiders have work to do.

Hinchliffe gives up a leadoff single in the 2nd and Aoki has seen enough...Gruber is on.

Edit: ....and Gruber walks the first batter he faces.

Davidson gets one in the 2nd to make it 4–3, but it could have been a lot worse as they had the bases loaded with one out until Gruber got back-to-back strikeouts looking. (His other out was also a strikeout looking.)

3 up, 3 down for Gruber in the top of the inning, and Arcamone just hit a solo shot to right to give the Spiders their first lead of the game, 5–4.

Edit: And now Pacheco goes yard with Elko aboard and it's 7–4!

Sigh, it's gonna be one of those games. Davidson gets a leadoff double and then a second homer from Putnam to make it 7–6 Spiders.

Edit: Good grief, four Spider fielders all trotting toward a ball hit to shallow left center, and it drops in a bit of swirling wind for a double. And then another double scores the run to tie it up at 7. Still only one out.

Edit 2: And then a 2-run homer. Tearing my hair out over here. After a foul out for the second out of the inning, Shockley comes on for Gruber.
