2025 Baseball Season

Where is the pitching that was doing well in the first half of the season. Sometimes I feel
like we are throwing batting practice. Last few series I have not been confident with any of
our pitchers.

Spiders drop game two, 6–1. Such a disappointing performance in A-10 play after the guys got off to a great start.

Best overall winning percentage A-10 but not even in position to make the conference tournament right now.

Gameday! Spiders (25-13, 7-11 Atlantic 10) take on Longwood (10-30, 4-11 Big South) today at 6PM in Farmville. Spiders beat the Lancers last month 12-2, behind a Jack Arcamone grand slam and an Elko 3-run homer.

Spiders starting pitcher will be Glenn Smith, and this will be his first start of the year. On the year he has a 9.00 ERA, 2.08 WHIP on 13 innings pitched.

One thing to note about the Lancers: three players have 16+ stolen bases. Mac Tufts (16 SB on 18 attempts), Myles Webb (18 for 21), and Tre Keels (27 for 29). Keels is also their home run leader, with 8 HRs on the season.

Spiders get the 7–1 win, with Longwood’s only run coming via error. Spiders also benefited with three unearned runs in the 2nd thanks to a pair of errors, plus two other runs coming from walks and another from a HBP forcing guys home.

Four Spider pitchers combined for the win.

Gameday! The Spiders (26-13, 7-11 Atlantic 10) will host St. Louis (23-17, 11-7 A10) this weekend as they look to get right in Atlantic 10 play after suffering a sweep @ GW last weekend. Here are the game times and probable starters:

  • Friday, 2PM ET: Jackson Hinchliffe (18 IP, 1-1, 5.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 13:11 K:BB, .307 BAA)
  • Saturday, 1PM: Esteban Rodriguez (37 IP, 2-2, 4.38 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 31:19 K:BB, .262 BAA)
  • Sunday, 11 AM: Joey Giodarno (3.2 IP, 1-0, 2.45 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, 3:4 K:BB, .333 BA)
St. Louis has had a really successful A10 campaign so far, winning five of their six series (with their only series loss being a sweep at George Mason). They have found success behind their pitching, and the staff ranks second in the A10 in Conference ERA (4.72), issuing the second fewest number of walks, and limiting the long ball (14 allowed in 18 games). Their workhorse out of the bullpen is Charlie Weber, a Junior transfer from Wofford. He holds a 3.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in conference play, and in his 4/12 appearance against Davidson he struck out 10 batters in 7 innings. Sophomore Josh Cunningham has been their most effective starter in A10 play. While some of his starts he has not gone deep into games, his most impressive start came last weekend vs VCU, where he went 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs.

The most potent bat in the Bilikins' lineup is number 2 hitter and Sophomore transfer from Indiana State, Riley Iffrig. All season he has been a consistent hitter, going through multiple stretches of 5+ game hit streaks (currently on a 4 game hit streak and 6 game on base streak). He is slashing .364/.481/.580 on the season, and leads the team in hits, doubles (14), RBI (39), and HBP (13). In conference play his slash line is .389/.476/.569. Also worth noting Freshman Hank Gomric, who recently won A10 player of the week (4/14), after going 5-12 in the Davidson series, with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.

With four A10 series left and 3 games out of a Conference Tournament spot, this is a now or never moment for the Spiders. Win the series, and you can feel okay with series against Dayton and VCU next. Lose the series, and we probably have to start thinking about next season. For all you scoreboard watchers, it's okay to root for VCU this weekend against Fordham, and would be great if UMass could take 2 of 3 from GW.

The Spiders manufactured a run in the bottom of the first with a Whitley single, WP advance, Bernstein ground out, and Jaffe sac fly, and that's where things stand heading to the bottom of the fourth.

Hinchliffe pitched the first three for the Spiders, and it was a little messy with three hits, a couple of walks, and a HBP, but SLU wasn't able to get anybody across. Gruber came on for the fourth and gave up only a four-pitch walk.

Gruber hits the leadoff batter in the sixth, Rigot comes on and gives up a ground-rule double and a sac fly to allow SLU to tie the game. Bilka now on the mound with a runner at third and one out.

Edit: And Bilka gives up an RBI single to make it 2–1 SLU.

Spiders now trail 4–1 in the bottom of the seventh after Bilka gives up a couple more runs in the top of the inning.

Spiders get a couple runs back in the seventh with an Arcamone walk, O'Brien double, and Elko single.

But SLU just made it 5–3 off a single, ground out, single.

Last chance for the Spiders...6–3 SLU heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Edit: Spiders go down quietly in order to end the game.

The Spiders once again struck first, with a Jaffe solo homer and back-to-back doubles by Arcamone and O'Brien in the bottom of the first to jump out to a 2–0 lead, but SLU got a solo homer of their own in the third and a two-run shot in the fourth and now lead 3–2. Heading to the sixth.

E-Rod has gone all five so far for the Spiders and given up five hits but also a walk and a couple of HBP. Does have four strikeouts.

O’Brien with solo homers in the 7th and 9th, but it wasn’t enough as SLU takes the 6–4 win.

Spiders get a 3-run homer from Arcamone in the third, while Giordano has only given up a single hit and a walk through four innings of work. Spiders batting in the bottom of the fourth.

What has happened to this team? How can we go from beating NC State, Boston College, and Virginia while having a 19-2 non conference record, to missing the A10 tournament? Very disappointing.

17 to best of my knowledge, no major injuries and yet pitching went to heck in a hand basket. There are such things as slumps but has been one major slide. Last year it drove me crazy with all the walks given by our staff. This year the A10 teams have hit our pitching pretty hard.

Idk but from that ooc start to likely missing a10 tourney is hard to imagine. Plus we were tied for 1st in preseason poll. Granted with VCU who the pollsters missed badly on too. But after ooc we had to be clear favorite. student17 u might have to regrade your guy Hardt on the hire.
