Gameday! The Spiders (26-13, 7-11 Atlantic 10) will host St. Louis (23-17, 11-7 A10) this weekend as they look to get right in Atlantic 10 play after suffering a sweep @ GW last weekend. Here are the game times and probable starters:
- Friday, 2PM ET: Jackson Hinchliffe (18 IP, 1-1, 5.00 ERA, 1.89 WHIP, 13:11 K:BB, .307 BAA)
- Saturday, 1PM: Esteban Rodriguez (37 IP, 2-2, 4.38 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, 31:19 K:BB, .262 BAA)
- Sunday, 11 AM: Joey Giodarno (3.2 IP, 1-0, 2.45 ERA, 2.18 WHIP, 3:4 K:BB, .333 BA)
St. Louis has had a really successful A10 campaign so far, winning five of their six series (with their only series loss being a sweep at George Mason). They have found success behind their pitching, and the staff ranks second in the A10 in Conference ERA (4.72), issuing the second fewest number of walks, and limiting the long ball (14 allowed in 18 games). Their workhorse out of the bullpen is
Charlie Weber, a Junior transfer from Wofford. He holds a 3.20 ERA and 1.18 WHIP in conference play, and in his 4/12 appearance against Davidson he struck out 10 batters in 7 innings. Sophomore
Josh Cunningham has been their most effective starter in A10 play. While some of his starts he has not gone deep into games, his most impressive start came last weekend vs VCU, where he went 7 innings, allowing 2 earned runs.
The most potent bat in the Bilikins' lineup is number 2 hitter and Sophomore transfer from Indiana State,
Riley Iffrig. All season he has been a consistent hitter, going through multiple stretches of 5+ game hit streaks (currently on a 4 game hit streak and 6 game on base streak). He is slashing .364/.481/.580 on the season, and leads the team in hits, doubles (14), RBI (39), and HBP (13). In conference play his slash line is .389/.476/.569. Also worth noting Freshman
Hank Gomric, who recently won A10 player of the week (4/14), after going 5-12 in the Davidson series, with 2 home runs and 7 RBIs.
With four A10 series left and 3 games out of a Conference Tournament spot, this is a now or never moment for the Spiders. Win the series, and you can feel okay with series against Dayton and VCU next. Lose the series, and we probably have to start thinking about next season. For all you scoreboard watchers, it's okay to root for VCU this weekend against Fordham, and would be great if UMass could take 2 of 3 from GW.
