2025 Baseball Season

Can be lucky or good (or both), but at 18-2, regardless of level of competition, impressive. Much more earned than lucky with this team. Keep driving!

So refreshing to see Spider baseball revived after a too long sleep.

Definitely need to make hay while we can. We’ve got all bottom-half teams in the preseason poll first, and then the back half of the schedule is loaded.

The Spiders moved up to 36 in the RPI after this morning's win and are now up to 32.
We’ve now fallen back to 39…one spot ahead of the 7–11 Bona team we just beat the snot out of. 🤷

We’re clearly helping the 50% of their rating that comes from opponents’ winning percentage.

Only 25% of our RPI is from our record, and there were a ton of other games today affecting the other 75% of our rating.

(We've slipped another 2 spots to 41 in the past half hour.)

Congrats to Elko on winning A10 player of the week! He's had a real breakout season so far.

Whitley, Bernstein, Jaffe, Arcamone, O'Brien, Elko....hell of a top 6. Opposing A10 pitchers beware!!

The Spiders have 5 points in this week's Coaches Poll! That puts us at 40th in the nation according to this poll, which directionally checks out with some of the computer metrics and other polls like the Mid-Major poll shared earlier. I don't think many people actually use this poll as far as national recognition goes, but still cool to see. I should also note that Mik Aoki is a voter this year, but I have no idea what his individual poll looks like.

In case anyone was curious, did some digging and turns out Bernstein was injured during the March 9th Lafayette game on a head-first slide into second. The play happens at the 107:30 in the below video. Nothing terrible-looking in real time, but you can see him kinda holding his left arm right before it cuts to commercial. He gets taken out right away, and hasn't played since.

Assuming it's a hand/wrist/arm injury based on the play. Hopefuly something he can come back from soon.

Gameday! Spiders (18-2, 3-0) take on the #22/23 Virginia Cavaliers (12-6, 3-3) at 4PM ET in Charlottesville. UVA started the season in the Top 5 and were the consensus pick to win the ACC. However, after starting the season 9-5, including a home ACC series loss against BC, they began to slip in the rankings. They had a 3-1 record last week, including a neutral site win v Maryland and a series win in Berkeley, CA.

We actually have probable starters for both teams today: it will be Gerry Peacock (1-0, 6.23 ERA, 8.2 IP, 5 BB, 6 SO) for the Spiders vs Bradley Hodges (0-0, 4.50 ERA, 2.0 IP, 2 BB, 2 SO) for the Cavaliers. Hodges had an impressive Freshman year, and was 110 on D1Baseball’s Top 200 Starting Pitchers in 2024, before an injury derailed his season. He made his only start of 2025 last week against Maryland.

At the plate, UVA has a ton of returning names from last year, but Henry Ford is definitely the name to circle. On the season, the Sophomore is slashing .370/.413/.521, with 2 home runs and 12 RBIs, and is tied for the team lead in runs scored (15).

Wild stat from the UVA game notes: they have won 31-straight home midweek contests at Disharoon Park dating back to the 2022 season. Streaks are meant to be broken!

Diamond Spiders off to a solid start so far. Already made UVA go to their 3rd pitcher of the day in the 2nd inning. Left some guys stranded or could of really blown open a 4-0 lead. Heres hoping can keep it up.

Through 3 innings in Charlottesville. Spiders now up 5-0, after Pacheco reached on an error, Larson double, and Palmeri ground out.

Peacock has pitched 3 strong innings on 34 pitches, has allowed 1 hit and no walks. Spiders as a team are batting 5-14 (.357) with 3 XBHs.

Peacock looks like he has some pretty good stuff.... decent curveball and either a splitter? or just straight change, can't tell. Boys are playing well and in control through 4.

Pacheco solo bomb!! 6-0 lead.

This is pretty unbelievable to watch. We are dominating UVA on the road through 5 innings. Just playing insanely confident right now.

Peacock's pitch count is fairly low, but I assume he doesn't go much longer? At least, I haven't seen the tendency to let our guys go very deep so far this year, unless Aoki's treating this game differently. So hopefully, we get a good inning or two out of Bilka? and we can nail this one down as it likely tightens up (now 6-1 after a solo shot).

Reinke is the first guy out of the bullpen and gets out of the inning after issuing two walks. Will be very interested to see if Aoki goes to Bilka at all this game.

I'm assuming a couple things.... that this game isn't nearly as important as the conference games coming up this weekend, but that at this point for morale, recruiting and national profile.... you probably don't wanna let this one slip if possible. No idea if any of these things play into his decision making at all. Either way, let's finish this.

I didn’t realize college baseball doesn’t have the 3-batter minimum. UVA brought in a lefty to face Arcamone, walked him, and then pulled the lefty right away.

I think Aoki got a little too cute…Smith got two outs, and then he went to Heaney to face a lefty. Heaney has pitched 3 innings all year…and the hitter reached on a bunt single. Was really well placed to be fair.

Bases loaded, two outs, four run lead. True freshman Angel Santiago Cruz now in to try to end this. He’s pitched one inning all year. Woo boy.
