2021-22 Roster

Re next year’s roster frankly this thread is depressing as heck and is the perfect compliment to Hardt’s announcement of support.

in the commitment article for Marcus Randolph, says he shot 38% from 3 as a junior. I can't find stats for this year.

can't find stats for Malcolm Dread, but on maxpreps you can see highlights from some of his games this year where he hits two 3's in each and shows deep range.

I did find Aidan Noyes detailed stats, including from his season high 23 point game last night. for the year he's 30-60 from 3.

what will be higher next year, our # of wins or our rebounding margin deficit?

Like your optimism Sman with these guys but you do realize that frosh Wilson and Bailey played a total of 154 minutes for the entire year. Remove the game against St Mary's (HS) and it drops to 116. So Mooney got about 9 minutes per game from the both of them. Of course the three frosh will have more of an opportunity to play but do you really expect any of these guys to shoot 38%?

Think about this also regarding the roster. Of course we all expect Burton to improve next season, but what Spider you think the opposing coaches will be priority #1 on stopping? No more Jacob, Blake, GG, or Cayo to worry about. As you stated in another thread you're okay with Grace as being the big if no other option, maybe add Wilson, Sal, Crabtree, or a couple frosh. My excitement level isn't close to yours.

I think if Jacob and Nate were to come back we could be ok. I think we could roll out a starting 5 like this:

1) Gilyard
2) Nelson
3) Burton
4) Cayo
5) Koureissi

I have pretty much said I hate Sal at 5 but I dislike Grace more. I think Matt doesn’t have the athleticism we need on D and he’s never shown any capacity to score in the paint which Sal seems at least capable of.

So preferably there’s a grad transfer big out there. We’ve had tremendous success getting those guys over the years.

So Sal it is.

yes, the entire class is shooters I believe.

You state the entire class is shooters, I take that to mean each and every member of the class is a shooter. I don't know where you put that bar. I'm curious how you define that.

My impression is that Mooney rates Matt higher than Sal. I too would prefer Sal, but unless there is a grad transfer, I foresee Matt starting at the 5.

It’s very clear that CM sees Matt as a better backup to Grant. The question is if he would be a better starter. I don’t think you can play Matt for 30mpg, he fouls at a high rate and I don’t think can hold down his part on D.

Of course that probably doesn’t mean a hill of beans if this seasons defensive focus is a barometer for next year as well.

In an alternate universe where we had a coach willing to adapt to his personnel's strengths to hide its weaknesses, we would employ a smaller starting five next year that could run and shoot well and mix in guys like Sal and Matt as needed.

Nelson's the only one I'm not confident is already known as a good shooter, and yet he may be one. I'm hoping he is but even if not he's the least of our problems.

Is it reality to think that any of these rosters would be better than what we had this year (and we finished 8th)?
Also look at the rosters of at least 5 or 6 other A10 teams next year. Plus we have the same coach. It's depressing.

it's a personal choice. you can be excited about the little we saw from young Isaiah and Dji. you can believe that Crabtree's hip, hamstring and foot issues will be cleared up and he'll be ready to be his best next year. you can believe in the potential of the freshmen.
or you can be depressed for the next 8 months.
how you handle the offseason is up to you.

I'd be worried about anyone who is depressed because it is off-season. However, by any measure, next year's results are highly likely to be butt-ugly. Simply put, there isn't enough talent, experience, or coaching in the house.

The guard brigade seems promising, but zero experience. The front court is likely to be the worst (or right at it) in the league. And then there is Mooney. It doesn't bode well.

Sal and Grace are our two front court starters next year. We could have Kevin Anderson, Ced, and Kendall Anthony as our guard rotation next year and it wouldn't matter. Instead, we are gonna roll out a bunch of unproven freshman and sophomores as our guards to go with Sal/Grace on the inside.

It ain't gonna be pretty. We finished 8th this year starting 4 seniors and one of our most promising sophomores in a long time. We're gonna be preseason double digit team in the A-10 next year.

Don't fret over me. I've been forced to go from caring to apathy. There's no being "excited" anywhere in sight. I'd like to be able to forget about it, but they keep sending me Donation requests every week in the mail to remind me. I've blocked the 804-289 number so I don't have to tell some well-meaning, enthusiastic, articulate young Spider athlete why I just can't contribute to their Spider experience.

Grace’s rebounding is a serious issue. He played 10.2 minutes and averaged 0.7 rebounds per game. Isaiah Wilson played 6.6 minutes and averaged 0.8 per game. Even Sal doubled him up with 1.4 rebounds per game in fewer minutes. Matt had more assists than rebounds this year, usually a difficult task for a big man. Unfortunately neither number is good here.

In conference play this year Matt played in 12 games, played 116 minutes, and had....TWO rebounds!!! In that same time he committed 21 fouls and had 2 blocks.

These numbers are really, really bad

The first game he gets more than 4 rebounds, he will be player of the game. Bank on it.

We desperately need to fill these last 2 scholarships with 2 bigs, preferably with at least one being a transfer. If we can land a big that can play defense, we could have a very good defensive lineup. Wilson and Dji were 2 of our better defenders this year. Gustavson and Sal are both typically solid on defense (both need to cut down on fouls though). Crabtree seemed solid defensively in limited minutes. Burton, when he's locked in, is a great shot blocker and draws charges.

I'm not sure that next year will be worse than this past year. At least next year the expectations will be that of a rebuilding team. This year was absolutely soul crushing because the expectations were so high and the results were so low. I could see next years team exceeding expectations if we can land a big man.

You new around here. Lol. This is Mooney we are talking about. There is no way we are filling both slots with 2 bigs for next year. If we get a big for next year, it will someone in the Lance Thomas category.

Someone who the sycophants can talk up all offseason, the MBB will show a couple clips of him making some really good moves, you will be like, yeah, he will be good enough to give Grace a breather.

I agree it's a longshot we will get 2 bigs. But, as soon as TJ graduated, we got Grant. That turned out pretty well. I think Mooney was hoping Weir would fall under that same model, but clearly that didn't work out. Mooney has a lot of playing time to offer now, in a system where the big man touches the ball every possession, which should help sell the recruiting pitch

Great post but no adapting to player skills / strengths.

16 years tells us there is a system and everyone must fit the system. If the square peg doesn't fit the round hole, then force the square peg in regardless. No flexibility & no adaptation.

I believe we will need three outside shooters average close to 40% to open up and give some room inside for the front line to work. They need the help.

It’ll be fascinating to see what CM drums up with just Grace and Sal. I actually think Sal may have something to give, he showed flashes this year. I suspect CM thinks he can roll with those guys but the bigger concern is the season after if they don’t take the extra scholarship year.
