if Khwan and Buck didn't leave, we wouldn't be complaining about roster composition.
we still have a nice base of talent. just some question marks that might have answers.

And it's not going to be pretty. Those guys can play ball. But they did leave.
sheet happens. that's the landscape in college ball these days. you can only prepare for it so much. and I still love our current roster. But they did leave.
I agree that stuff happens. It’s a significant issue that our roster composition is so discombobulated that we are likely to see two new starters who have no background with us. Not everything should be chalked up to bad luck.sheet happens. that's the landscape in college ball these days. you can only prepare for it so much. and I still love our current roster.

Two new starters?
Andre is our most gifted freshman.Cayo and JJ will likely be the new starters, though they do have a background with us and are much more familiar with the system than any of the freshmen. I don’t see any true freshman starting at the beginning of the season, barring any injury.
I like Wojcik. I can see him eventually starting and getting significantly more minutes as the season progresses.
We are missing a SG and a F. I don’t think anyone believes Julius is a capable enough ballhandler to be our starting SG, so I guess I’m ruling him out as a starter. Maybe Cayo starts at F but otherwise, I think we’re talking about two guys starting who weren’t on the roster last year. Two new starters?

But they did leave.
I don't think I've seen JJ bring the ball upcourt in 3 years of play here. Maybe we don't need a second ballhandler though. Seems like we would want one.our SG has typically been a combo guard in the past, but that's not always necessary and may not be the case this year. Julius is a SG. he definitely could start there. Noah is another option. even Woj or Bryce.
if we really feel we need a 2nd ball handler to help Jacob against a pressing team, then I could see it being Andre.
So if we stipulate that there a variety of reasons for why players leave, it still doesn't change that both guys are gone. One left, the other was dismissed from the team for multiple violations of athletic department rules. Big difference.
Who hacked 23's account and what have you done with him?I'm with you Spideman, Mooney has this year to show his stuff and he will. That will build momentum for next year and everyone back and add Francis. People are sleeping on Sal because of his build. Kevin Durant could not even do 1 bench press, not one, at the NBA combine when he came out. Ask Fezz how important bench press is for players. Perfect OOC schedule for us this year and we will be hitting on all cylinders come A10 schedule.
I’ve been ruminating on this today. Here are our “combo guard” secondary ball handlers the last several years:our SG has typically been a combo guard in the past, but that's not always necessary and may not be the case this year. Julius is a SG. he definitely could start there. Noah is another option. even Woj or Bryce.

I tend to be a middle of the road guy when it comes to my expectations of our basketball program but I keep watching these arguments unfold and am flummoxed that there's a contingent of fans who seem unwilling to at least acknowledge that our roster situation is messy. Why is that so hard to admit to?
off a 12 win team
Whatever, man. Bad mouth our team all you want. Heck, cheer for VCU and other A-10 teams if ypu want. Your choice. I like our team this year and think we will be very good.
This is the inability to admit the situation of which I speak. I’m happy to acknowledge that we have three very good players, it’s the other ten scholarship spots that are at issue. Consider this:Let me help. I don't think it is messy because it is not. Some people are overreacting just because a couple guys who started games for us are no longer here, but we have just as many or more minutes returning than several teams in our conference. So, are all of those rosters messy?
Lots of teams that played around 8 guys lost 3 or even 4 seniors or lost guys for other reasons, leaving them with 4 or 5 guys returning who have played decent minutes. How are we any different from teams like that?
We return guys who played over 36, 31, 30, 15, and 12 minutes, including a star PG and a star big who don't just come along every year. Not too many teams in our conference can match that, so, no, our roster is not messy at all.
Hard to believe, but I agree with this post. The only other consideration is as URFan1 said - coming off a 12-win team.Let me help. I don't think it is messy because it is not. This is the inability to admit the situation of which I speak. I’m happy to acknowledge that we have three very good players, it’s the other ten scholarship spots that are at issue. Consider this:
A) how many A10 teams feature an eligible scholarship roster of 1 senior, 2 juniors, 3 sophomores and 6 freshmen?
B) for anyone who is even in this ballpark, how many of those teams are projected as tournament teams?
If our roster was limited to just three players, I’d wholeheartedly agree that we’re in good shape. But you start five and should play eight.
Im not sure why you aren’t getting my post either, I don’t think it’s terribly complicated. I’m not debating the quality of our three returning starters. I specifically said, “I’m happy to acknowledge that we have three very good players.”I don't get this post at all. So, does experience guarantee success? 2 of our sophomores are Jacob and Grant. Are you saying you would rather have senior bench warmers than sophomores like Jacob and Grant? I am not trying to put words in your mouth, but I really don't understand why it is an issue that we only have one senior when one of our juniors and 2 of our sophomores all played over 30 mpg last year, and are as good or better than anyone in our conference.
T, you are simply wrong.Im not sure why you aren’t getting my post either, I don’t think it’s terribly complicated. I’m not debating the quality of our three returning starters. I specifically said, “I’m happy to acknowledge that we have three very good players.”
I don’t know why it’s so hard to acknowledge that after those three, we have serious question marks on this roster.

I sure hope so! Good BB is great for RVA. I do think there is going to be an issue with turnovers that will need to be addressed. The A10 will figure it out and press all day long. It is a good schedule to work on this issue and others. There is good talent on the roster if CM can find a way to get them all on the same page (he hasn't shown that he can do this). Could be a surprise on the upside in the A10, but not holding my breath.Yes, I tend to agree that Fan1 is pretty level headed, and mostly on the positive - so no need to attack.
That said, I agree with VT. I think our roster is in pretty good shape, as he notes a Grant Golden is not found walking down the street every day. I love Gilly's work ethic, skill level and game - though I think he could be limited by his size BUT, if he can take the next step and become a Kevin Anderson type of impact, we could be really really good the next two years. Sherod is the key. Can he be a dynamic, all conference type player. Or will he be a guy that can score 14 points a game without impacting the defensive end or creating offense for his less skilled teammates? Let's do it Nick!
Mooney seems to have been resting the last 4-5 years and now has a Tornado Hardt warning on his permanent radar. I think we see a pre prozac Mooney and a surprise A10 team.

You’re right, it’s perfectly normal to have a roster with six freshman and one senior.Sorry, I don't get this post either. Don't most teams have some question marks after their top 3 guys? As I said earlier, we return guys who played over 36, 31, 30, 15, and 12 minutes. I wouldn't call Cayo and JJ question marks, but even if you call them that, using minutes played, Davidson's 4th and 5th returning guys averaged 10 and 6 minutes. Rhode Island's 3rd, 4th, and 5th returning guys averaged 8, 5, and 2 minutes a game. St. Bona. 4th and 5th guys averaged 14 and 11.
How deep do you expect teams to go as far as returning minutes are concerned? If teams play about 8, which is common, and lose about 3, which is common, wouldn't that mean only about 5 guys return who had decent minutes?
Shouldn't be that hard to see the point. Historically in college basketball (though not exclusively - Ky, Duke, etc) teams with talented juniors (and particularly) seniors experience more success. It is as simple as that.I don't get this post at all.
Agreed. After Golden, Gilyard and Sherod, there's a bunch of unknowns and not all-conference talent. Golden has the potential to be first team all-A10. Gilyard and Sherod are in the conversation for one of the all-conference teams (1st, 2nd, 3rd). Julius and Cayo are "just guys". The Grad Transfer looks like "just a guy" as well. Everyone else on the roster are big time unknowns at the college level, and anything said otherwise is crazy talk.
Bottom line, it all depends on how this team gels whether or not we break .500.
You’re right, it’s perfectly normal to have a roster with six freshman and one senior.
Well, since my team also has Jacob nick and grant in addition to several fictitious upperclassmen who are capable of aptly rounding out the roster, I’m certain my team would beat your team.Who cares how many freshman we have if a few can help us? Would you rather not have Sal or Wojcik play this year because they are freshman? Why the big deal about having only one senior? Fine, you take your roster and trade Jacob, Nick, and Grant for seniors. I will keep them and take my chances against your team.
