I'm happy we won. well ... more relieved. but watching it, there wasn't very much to be excited about or to think we've turned a corner yet.
we beat Maine by 4 at home. Roche made shots. that's the one positive I take from the game. I wouldn't say anyone else exceeded expectations.
I’m relieved we won as well. Hopefully this was a get right game to get the monkey off our back. It looks like team chemistry is still pretty low, and I think that plays a big part in why the offense has been so discombobulated and our defense has been so porous. I just wonder what’s going to happen when some of these guys start to gain some confidence and feel comfortable with each other.

As I said, I thought perhaps some would simply be happy we won. Obviously, that wasn't the case.

Every Econ teacher I had at Richmond said never assume. When you assume you make an ASS of U and ME.

“Our opponent shot a miserable 6-for-30 from 3, that's 20% Someone must have been doing something right.”

For all you know our opponents were blind kids in wheelchairs, you didn’t watch so you don’t know what happened!!!
Was Maine blind kids in wheelchairs? No. If they were I expect I'd have heard about it someplace.

I didn't go to the SBA. I went to RC, where my professors taught me the value of critical thinking. Drawing a conclusion with plenty of supporting evidence is not assuming; it's using numerous facts to reach a reasonable conclusion.

I do know what happened. We won the game. Maine shot 20% from 3, and only 36% overall. It had far more possessions, given it had only six turnovers and we had only four steals, yet was unable to take advantage of the added opportunities. It had only seven assists. We had 15 turnovers, but Maine turned them into a mere seven points. We protected our own backboard, with 33 defensive rebounds to Maine's seven ORs. Poor shooting numbers, low assist totals, outrebounded by 10 indicates we did something right defensively.

As I said, I thought perhaps some would simply be happy we won. Obviously, that wasn't the case.

As far as the idiotic "Mooney cheerleader" comment, I'm a fan of the Spiders. When they win, I'm happy. As long as he's the coach, I want him to win as many games as possible. When he is no longer the coach, I'll do the same for the next guy. I don't want him to lose, unlike some here.

Commemorating the CAA Years of the Richmond v. William and Mary Rivalry!

Walking down memory lane back to the years when we played the William and Mary Indians on Thanksgiving Day when that was the only day of Thanksgiving week, other than Sunday, that we didn't have classes with mandatory attendance. Always been a terrific rivalry in the true sense of the word as the teams have been evenly matched over the years as evidenced by the closeness of the won-lost record although both teams have enjoyed long winning streaks in the rivalry with William and Mary winning 15 in a row from 1939 to 1954. Spiders have won ten of the last thirteen to now hold a one game edge overall. Kind of sad the game will no longer be the last game of the season starting next year with the teams being in different conferences. Have a great deal of respect for William and Mary which was aided in one of my first years out of college when the game was in Williamsburg and a fan wearing green and gold walked up to me while I was standing in the ticket line and handed me two tickets free and said enjoy the game.
I too vaguely remember the games on Thanksgiving day...my father was a UR grad...I was a little boy...we lived in rural Virginia, but somehow my father talked my mother into allowing us to go to the game...that would be unheard of now in many families including mine!...my most vivid memory is my father telling me not to pull for the team in green!...I do not remember who won!

Go Spiders!

Who are u talking about? The board is about 97% anti Mooney. The tiny few of us who do not relentlessly attack him during and after every game have continued to post.
Definitely not your 4700, you are here through thick and thin. Thinking of 80s and some others. In fact a few of them that I recall have not popped in. Oh well. They know they can wait it out and eventually we will be back in the tournament and they will be slam dunking on us. Meanwhile over at VCU they keep keeping on.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - William and Mary

after another dramatic win at Hampton any doubts I had that this Spiders team is special have disappeared...I was dismal after the Wofford loss...puzzled after the indifferent play at Delaware State and incredulous when we played A&T a one score game...but those days are gone...I busting out and full of Spiders mojo now!

the team has turned into CAA Champions and earned an FCS Playoff bid for the third year in a row...the only thing standing in the way of an undefeated, outright Championship exit from the CAA is our historic rival the William and Mary Tribe...Hollywood couldn't have written a better script...so many times during our CAA years this game versus the Indians has had Championship and Playoff implications for one, or both teams...the Spiders have done well often...

a veteran Spiders player described the games versus the Tribe as always "chippy'...I think that's a synonym for intense?...I hope this one is no different...our team is used to it and has seemed to play its best in the most challenging situations...that's how we got here...big plays at the most important times...finding different ways to win each week

radio analyst Chris Anderson commented in a Times-Dispatch story earlier in the week that his 1998 Richmond Championship team's trademark was its demeanor “There’s a coolness, there’s a calmness that somebody’s going to make a play.”...this describes this year's Spiders...someone has always stepped up to make plays at the most important time...that may be the difference again on Saturday...

it's already been a great season with hopefully much more to enjoy straight ahead...be thankful that we've had a chance to enjoy it and the great 17 year ride in the CAA!...an FCS National Championship, several CAA Championships and multiple FCS Playoff bids...that's pretty damn good!

don't look now, but I think I heard the late Tom Petty doing a sound check!

enjoy the special Prologue episode and remember the always popular and loud Spider Gang Senior Day Shout Out will take place in parking lot 61 at about 10:45AM Saturday...if you need to warm up your leather lungs, refill your Spider mojo or just have some fun come on by to thank those Richmond players who will be playing their last regular season game!

Go Spiders!

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - William and Mary

Barty was the rare athlete. During one Greek Week, expanded to allow non-Greeks to participate, he set a school record in the shot put, besting everyone who had ever participated for Richmond's Olympic sports teams. Although he hadn't thrown the shot in a couple of years, in fairness, he had thrown the shot in high school. Came to my HS once to play baseball (excelled there too) and in between innings would run over to thrown the shot....which he won. An all round sports rarity in his era. One of the all time great Spiders.
