Mike Walz - Player Eval

He used it with Golden and Grace down the stretch of A10 tourney and Iowa game. Better example. I don’t know the number of minutes they played together, it probably wasn’t too much, but it was successful at least in small sample then. But I agree it would be predicated on Beagle, or even Soulis, being able to play forward.
Good memory. Grace could play both the 4 and 5 which gave us that flexibility. We will have to see if Beagle has a similar ability. Walz is strictly a 5.

The only time Mooney went with a 2 center strategy was Grace and Quinn and that didn't work well.

Mikkel Tyne - Player Eval

Strengths
Very quick, strong on ball defender.
Hit the ground running and stepped in very well as a true freshman when Hunt went down with injury.
Fearless going to the hoop and beating man off the dribble, and has shown ability to hit layups over taller defenders with a variety of one handed scoop shots.
83% FT shooter
I was very impressed with his ability to come in as a freshman and not just try to "run the offense" but rather look for opportunities to score, or drive the lane and make an opportunity for himself or teammate.
Needs Improvement
3 PT shooting - Shot 27% on the year. He had a few hot games, shot 5-7 from 3 vs Florida.
Overall FG % was 32% - half his shots were 3 pointers pulling this down. I think his shooting in general will improve with another year adjusting to college game. While he does not appear to have Kendall Anthony's shooting touch, I think he can be an upper 30's % from 3. I am very hopeful that all the experience and adjustment to the speed and size of the college game will translate into improved shooting this season.
Passing / Assists - Averaged 2 assists per 40 minutes. Needs to be better at finding open man, that is a low assist number. I do think he can create opportunities with his speed with the ball.
Outlook:
Lot of fun watching Mikkel this season. He came in and beat out Smith from Day 1, he looked like he belonged and had a few really productive games. Also had some struggles scoring and making plays on offense. Mooney brought in plenty of competition at guard this offseason, and seemingly White would impact his minutes the most, and possibly GW3. Big key is taking that next step to consistently make shots. I think he gained a bit of confidence with Mooney early and that will carry over - will have plenty of opportunity. Would love to see the summer and fall practices. As much as I like his potential to score at this level, he already is a good defender and ball handler. Would be beneficial for him to focus a bit more on his playmaking and facilitating as well. Not counting him out at all for starter type minutes, but definitely not a given with the talent in from the portal and Hunt returning.

Brickhouse hosting MLAX heavyweights in 2024

Yes - very tough not to think about the 'WHAT IF' of our opening game two OT 11-12 loss to the Terps..................Have to give Chemotti tons of credit for our schedule after learning all on him to set up the schedule. We played four of the final eight teams. Getting close .... not sure there is another college sport where there is such a difference between the top 10 and the next ten ...the "bluebloods" tend to reload...............and with UVA Connor Shellenberger went to St. Anne's - Bellfield ....whose lacrosse field is a mile or two from UVA's Klockner Stadium.............home grown talent can be huge..................

Football to Patriot League. Should basketball and rest of sports be concerned?

In FBS football there are 128 teams, with 24 playoff spots, so you have an 18% chance of making the playoffs

In Lacrosse there are 77 D1 teams, with 17 playoff spots, so you have a 22% chance of making the playoffs.

Additionally, lacrosse is very much a regional sport with a lot of small private colleges playing it, so are chance of "competing" are significantly higher because we have more resources to pour into our program than a lot of these schools do.

There are only 2 BCS leagues that play D-1 lacrosse, the Big 10 and the ACC and both only have 5 of there member schools sponsoring lacrosse. So, we really only have to compete with 10 BCS level lacrosse programs.

Lacrosse is a rapidly growing sport though, so I suspect our odds of regularly making the tournament are going to do down as more and more of the big boys add lacrosse.

We have a great lacrosse program, but there are many reasons why it is WAY EASIER to make it the lacrosse NCAA tournament than it is football, soccer and certainly basketball.
There are 24 teams in the FBS Playoffs?

That is a lot of Bowls participating…

Mike Walz - Player Eval

Mike is a great athlete, who hasn't been playing basketball that long. He has a lot of upside and will get a lot of minutes. With that said, I believe Beagle has the potential to make one of the all A10 conference teams. He is a very strong player and we are fortunate to get him. There is a chance they could both be on the court at the same time.
I don't know if they will be on the court at the same time. The only time Mooney went with a 2 center strategy was Grace and Quinn and that didn't work well. I haven't seen Beagle play, but I know Walz is not much of an offensive threat away from the basket, so if Beagle has similar skill set, I can't see them co-existing together. If Beagle can play the 4 though, than maybe Mooney tries this.

I do agree that Beagle has the better pedigree and if Walz is indeed his back up, than we are really good shape at the 5 this year.

I think getting Beagle actually benefits Walz because it allows him a chance to prove himself of being an A-10 starter without being thrust in the position of being a starter Day 1.

Walz has a lot of positives. He is physical, can block shots, is a good passer, and does a good job rebounding in traffic down low. He showed some inside moves last year, and will need to show more to become an impact scorer for us. I look forward to him taking it to the basket and not settling for the floaters Quinn settled for. Whether he starts or not, I see him in line for good minutes, and I see him making a positive impact when out there.

My thoughts on Lacrosse.

I think our odds are better at winning a D1 National Championship in Lacrosse than FBS Football…

But I don’t think Pro lacrosse generates more revenue than the NFL…

NIL Website

I would say if they are development professionals running the NIL, they would know that yes, you want to get big dollar donors involved, but the base of a stable fundraising pyramid, is having a large number of small dollar donors.

If you are depending upon high dollar donors to fund everything, you run the risk that a few of them decide to not renew or focus their charitable endeavors elsewhere at any given time and then you are scrambling to try and replace significant lost contributions. If you also have 500 donors giving you $250 buck a year, that is $125,000 per year, that allows you breathing room when one or two you high dollar donors don't renew.

Also, set up a monthly donation option versus just a one time donation. If you get folks to make a monthly donation via their credit card, that just runs on autopilot every month. Smaller donors are likely to say, sure I can afford $25 or $50 bucks a month.

More movement

Getting rid of LaSalle and Fordham would do so much more than adding nearly anyone. They need to find a way to force that first.
Yes, there is no way LaSalle or Fordham would be considered for A-10 now. I know kicking schools our of a league is largely unheard of but with drastically changing landscape of college basketball ongoing, it would behoove the league to have all options on the table.

CofC would not be a bad addition though.

Introducing the 2024-2025 Transfer Portal Tracker!

MD, thanks again for all your efforts this portal season. With so much more craziness and volume, it is quite a task to try to keep up. What's interesting to note is our first two commits in Beagle and Neskovic were known about from basically day 1. The last three were all either last minute, or completely unbeknownst to the internet and this board - save I guess for 80's fan.
Either way, very productive portal season.

Do you approve of the move to the Patriot League?

Spiders have not had may poached. Mustapha to Wake and on to the NFL now. Hall to Albany and now to FBS and the way he acted in the playoff game last year made me wonder even more what his leaving was all about.
Point being, the players we get are not going ot move down to lesser quality teams.

We will know more when the portal opens next year after the playoffs end for the Spiders if they make it (and lean to they will and might win a game or two) If they do win a game or two, it might be the last time Spiders make it out of first round again (Hope I am wrong), if we see a lot of transfers out.

I will give you Bryant, but Campbell is a top half PL team.
With the move down to the Patriot League, I would expect our "poached" players to increase. And not only by FBS teams, but by the higher level of FCS teams. There will be a trickle down effect of NIL to FCS, but likely only in the top level to start. So think South Dakota, North Dakota State, Montana, Villanova, etc. Teams with a history of competing for FCS title and being in that top 10. Because remember - their players will be poached, but they will be able to replenish from 2 directions - FBS players moving down, and lower tier FCS (now Richmond and Patriot League) moving up.
