X Factors

Anachnid, the CM factor does worry me. Last season chemistry was good, but there were a lot of guys that kind of knew their role, not a ton of battles for PT. Noyes got the starting nod at forward, but that went south and it was clear Dji was the better option. So the roles and pecking order were set pretty early.

This year - without seeing how things are playing out in practice - it seems like a lot of potential for guys to be unhappy with their role, as well as difficulty determining who is the best option and what pieces fit the best.

For example, Beagle could have gone a ton of places - if Walz plays great and gets 30 minutes a game - and Mooney does not think Beagle fits at forward, that is one potential area. If Roche is 100% healthy, will Mooney play him ~20 minutes a game like he was in past when healthy - despite his defensive shortcomings ( I know sman, you think he is good defender :))?
4700 seems to discount Soulis, but if healthy - he appears to me to be an impact player - who turned down offers from St. Johns and St. Mary's to play here.

I think having more talent is much better problem than not enough, but will have to see how long it takes CM to figure out the roster. I guess with the OOC so weak this year, again probably doesn't matter. We don't have the opportunity (like last year) to build a resume in the OOC - other than win every game , including Auburn.

Mooney.
Every preseason there is so much conjecture as to starters, playing time and possible break out players. The above shows a lot of basketball knowledge. But for CM that’s thinking way outside the box. Using three guards ha!
So the real X factor is CM and who he will force into his predetermined positions and the talent that will be left on the bench or in the CM doghouse.

The Rudy Project

This smells of anticompetitive violations of US anti-trust laws. They are pushing out competiton using their market power. It's illegal as crap.

From the article above:

Project Rudy is built on two somewhat simple concepts to increase revenue from television networks and corporate sponsors.

(1) Arrange more games between power conference programs by eliminating all games against Group of Five and FCS opponents; expanding the playoffs; and pitting blue-blood powers more often against one another.

(2) Consolidate the media rights of the 70 schools under one agreement, instead of the current structure of five different packages (one for each power league and Notre Dame).

Probably not that many 6'5 to 6'7 A 10 stud scorers who are their teams 3rd biggest guy on the floor anyway. If so, my question would be could they guard GW3 at the other end?

can u explain what not being 3rd biggest on floor has to do with it? Someone still has to guard them and it won't be our 5s if those guys r athletic big guards or wings. Looks like the all a10 teams r littered with the 6'5 to 6'7 scorers. Need to identify our defender for that type player. smaller guards or bigs we're ok. if they were 2nd biggest out there same issue imo. I might be misinterpreting what u r saying.

The Rudy Project

couldn't remember if this proposal for the Power 4 conferences has been posted here or not...according to this story the Rudy Project is being presented to the AD's of the SEC and Big Ten this week

it's a good read if you not familiar with the movements to reform the Power 4 conferences into a league of their own...apparently there is another similar proposal out there as well

as for its impacts on the Spiders one would be no more games scheduled against Power 4 opponents...

sorry to see college football as we've known it go this way, but it seems inevitable...one of the only constants in life and business is change...the NCAA got left behind

Go Spiders!

Right. Who guards a 6'5" scorer on the other team? Shoot, who guards Erik Reynolds? We couldn't check him in Brooklyn with big or small guards.

I think last year Tyne filled in well for Hunt because King was a scoring guard so Tyne could be PG. So depending on how he and Hunt shoot, may see some toggling of those two to avoid overlap of skill sets. Maybe one with a shooter next to them in the backcourt.

I do worry about our D if we have 4 small guards playing a lot. Last year we did have 3 w King, Hunt & Tyne tho Hunt missed some time. And I don't think played together, maybe briefly. Now I do think Hunt and Tyne r pretty good small defenders, no idea on GW3 and B Artis. but what we had last year was some length to supplement them with Dji Bigs & Harris. This year we may not have that length or athleticism on defensive end if the 4 guards eat more minutes, or others don't step up. Dusan will be in there but as 23 has said we don't know what drop off to expect there on D either. Glou and Tanner strike me as O guys but idk. We need O too and we could have more depth on O. Robinson would certainly play the part but he's a freshman. It's 1 reason I think possible we see a little more of the 5s playing together at same time than in the past. It's possible they may be needed for D. Guards playing strong D in backcourt is great but I don't think they are normally a shut down guy. Think Goose. Dji last year. They had size. could guard different type of players. who will that guy be?

Will be interesting to see what develops but it always is.

Oops

Sheesh...Robins Hall also had a flood a couple of weeks ago after a toilet malfunction, and now Lora Robins Court was evacuated yesterday due to a gas leak. Eventful semester in residential life so far!

Yes, I am coming to the conclusion that GW3 will be a big part of what we do. Besides different posters on here providing eyewitness "shoot the lights out" type of reports, Mooney has said the same, and now reports of 3 3's in a row in scrimmage. Good, solid sized guard I think will bring a lot of versatility on the floor.
