Developmental guys are either ones who redshirt or maybe 10th or 11th guy on the bench. If someone is not redshirting or even getting garbage minutes at the end of games, then I don’t see things changing much in the future. That’s already happening right now with guys 12-13 on our bench. Adding a 14-15 scholarship player will only make that situation worse. I’d rather spend the time, money, and energy getting fewer players but are more confident they can make an 8 or 9 man rotation vs. more scholarship players who are less talented, hoping we find a diamond in the rough.Generally true but you also need developmental guys somewhere. CMs system is more dependent on guys who have been in the system for a year or more to be closer to their max productivity.
Realistically by conference play, only 8 or 9 guys are getting minutes a game. I’d rather concentrate our efforts and finances on getting fewer but more impact players than spreading it out to more scholarships and likely diluting the talent anyway. We don’t have a roster of impact players now. If our 12th or 13th guy aren’t playing, I can’t imagine it’ll be any better with the 14th or 15th guy anyway. So with 1 less walk on are people still for using that spot for a new 2nd walk on versus a 14th scholarship player? I’ve proposed in past using more bullets because Moon shoots so many blanks. Increase our luck quotient. So try for a good player on ship for the open spot. Also because UR views as true operational cost vs. pay to play.
One moreHow many open spots do we have at this moment?
I think AP will be better coming off the bench for either the 3 or 4 and not as starting. If we don’t get a top PG then my next hope is a lengthy guard who is tough defensively that can play the 3.We need someone in place of AP. I think he can play a role and contribute in year 2. But next to that back court, defense will be atrocious again if AP is playing with two potential defensive liabilities. . We really need a an athletic big guard or wing to throw in the mix.
Was thinking Johnston fills more of a 3 role similar to Roche when he first got here. He will probably play the 2 and Tyne the 1. When was the last time we had a taller guard be our primary ball handler? Always been 6’ or shorter as far as I can remember. It was more wishful thinking on my end that we’re still going after a top PG. We need an elite PG who is quick, create their own shot, good shooter, and good distributor of the ball. I don’t think neither Tyne nor Johnston check all those boxes.Johnston at 3? He’s a PG. I think he’s given the chance to run the show here. Maybe it’s a shared backcourt with the combo 2 PG thing or we need Johnston more at shooting guard if Tyne is starter. Expecting a Johnston Tyne backcourt. Still small but at least Johnston has more size.
Daughtry yeah I hope he plays 4. Maybe he gets some time here at 5 but I’d rather play him with a 5. We could rebound. Would take philosophy change by Moon. He sees himself as stretch 4 but actually played C at Indiana State. How Moon views it will be interesting. Very efficient player maybe stamina prevented more mins.
Or that he couldn't get in because of academics. 🤮Of course the Ram faithful will say they backed off.
Of course the Ram faithful will say they backed off.Great pick-up. I know he was interested in VCU as well, so either the Spiders out recruited them for him, or the Rams backed off.
Agree. He looks like he has good size/length and his shooting stroke looks pretty decent, even though has not put up big numbers. But I think adding him with Daughtry would give us a nice upgrade at forward.Go after guy at Norfolk State in the portal.
agree Carolina and believe the desire to avoid this chaos led UR to the Patriot League for football.... its restrictions put us much closer to the former almost amateur model which we seem to prefer for football!
Go Spiders!
I just became a hugh Vols fan!!
I agree with prior comments shared here that while I agree with that notion, there are very few quality big men as transfers and likely won’t be able to land a top tier one. Plus we have Walz and Beagle so no one is going to come here to be the 3rd guy. We’ll need to get 1-2 big men after next season. I think Walz/Beagle will be okay enough at the 5 spot for us. Jaden fits the need at the 4. I think Johnson is a starter at the 3 for us. I like Tyne but not as main PG. Not sure if it’s too late, but we need to find our Jordan King this year.
