Jaden Daughtry - Portal Commit

Excellent pick up! Welcome to Spider Nation Jaden! Let’s go get a stud PG and we might be back in business.
I said the same thing last year... and saying it again. Unless CM is going to change his offense (which he thought about last year but didn't per newspaper article) we need a quality big man as Walz and Beagle are not the answer.

I agree with prior comments shared here that while I agree with that notion, there are very few quality big men as transfers and likely won’t be able to land a top tier one. Plus we have Walz and Beagle so no one is going to come here to be the 3rd guy. We’ll need to get 1-2 big men after next season. I think Walz/Beagle will be okay enough at the 5 spot for us. Jaden fits the need at the 4. I think Johnson is a starter at the 3 for us. I like Tyne but not as main PG. Not sure if it’s too late, but we need to find our Jordan King this year.

This kid looks like he could be a really good player in our system. Last year he was an incredible 6th man for the Sycamores. 2nd in points despite being 6th in minutes. 61% from inside the arc and 40% from deep (only 30 attempts all season). He’s a 64% free throw shooter so not sure I trust the 40% from 3, but if he can knock one or two down in a game that would really help our offense.

He led the team in blocks and was second in steals. Sounds like a guy who works hard on both sides of the ball. Remind anybody else of Isaiah Bigelow?

Johnston at 3? He’s a PG. I think he’s given the chance to run the show here. Maybe it’s a shared backcourt with the combo 2 PG thing or we need Johnston more at shooting guard if Tyne is starter. Expecting a Johnston Tyne backcourt. Still small but at least Johnston has more size.

Daughtry yeah I hope he plays 4. Maybe he gets some time here at 5 but I’d rather play him with a 5. We could rebound. Would take philosophy change by Moon. He sees himself as stretch 4 but actually played C at Indiana State. How Moon views it will be interesting. Very efficient player maybe stamina prevented more mins.

Definitely seems like a big forward to me. Highlights look a bit different than Bigelow. I think Bigs had more foot speed , could defend quicker wings. Daughtry appears more of a bruiser but with some craftines around the hoop. Will be interesting to see how the 3 point shooting does with more attempts. As noted the low FT percent seems to indicate possibly an anomaly. Or possibly the FT percentage was an outlier and will shoot much better. In any case he looks to be a guy that can help.

Was thinking Johnston fills more of a 3 role similar to Roche when he first got here. He will probably play the 2 and Tyne the 1. When was the last time we had a taller guard be our primary ball handler? Always been 6’ or shorter as far as I can remember. It was more wishful thinking on my end that we’re still going after a top PG. We need an elite PG who is quick, create their own shot, good shooter, and good distributor of the ball. I don’t think neither Tyne nor Johnston check all those boxes.

Daughtry will be great at the 4. Of all our transfers so far, I’m most excited for him. Will do well offensively and defensively for us. Don’t think he has the size to play the 5.

Here’s my anticipated starting line-up with Tyne at the 1.

1 - Tyne
2 - Johnston
3 - AP
4 - Daughtry
5 - Walz

If we aren’t going for a PG then let’s get a 6’5” or 6’6” wing to play the 3. AP can play the 3 or 4 spot.

We need someone in place of AP. I think he can play a role and contribute in year 2. But next to that back court, defense will be atrocious again if AP is playing with two potential defensive liabilities. . We really need a an athletic big guard or wing to throw in the mix.
I think AP will be better coming off the bench for either the 3 or 4 and not as starting. If we don’t get a top PG then my next hope is a lengthy guard who is tough defensively that can play the 3.

Saw a Collective email today, said we have 2 slots, they cannot be counting walk-ons.

Yeah walk ons do count to the roster limit. And I don’t see Kirby Mooney moving on anywhere right now. But if we have 2 means someone is transferring that isn’t yet announced. Or Collective made a mistake which is possible.

He seem to put up good numbers, but for some reason was coming off the bench and only getting 20 minutes a game for a below .500 Indiana State team - any concern there? Why was that the case? If he was so efficient - why not get the start? Why not get up to 30 minutes?

I like him on paper right now, but as with all transfers - its a wait and see.

Could be because of foul trouble. He had the 2nd most fouls on the team, and a good amount of 3, 4, and even 5 foul games.

after how hyped we were on some of the transfers in recent years I will try to keep it within reason (especially when I personally was criticized by a Mooneyite for being overly excited in the offseason for players that turned out to not be good somehow) but this is as close to a home run as we are going to get. Hopefully we know how to use him, won't know until November or December.

He said he was 30 lbs overweight going into season. I assume stamina reasons & working himself into shape. Once past that his performance justified more time…but maybe his coach decided to keep in same role that was working, esp if prone to fouls. Hopefully he’s past the weight issues.

As you can see from this post, lot of positive about Daughtry, but of course defensive concern.

"He had better hope he doesn't go to a spot with a coach that prioritizes defense."

so he will fit right in here then 😂

Really like this pick-up. Daughtry fills a huge need and will immediately be our starter at the 4. Walz and Daughtry are both more low post players, so wondering with these two if Mooney finally changes up the offense to better fit his personnel. Frankly, with the exception of the kid from Loyola, we do not project as a good shooting team. We are a team should seek to pound it inside and use dribble drive to get to our scoring opportunities.

I still like this pick up, just not seeing anything that points to a higher functioning defensive unit as of yet. I still think he can be an upgrade over what we rolled out last year for sure. Seems like fan base was high on his offensive ability and impact mid major player. So that is good. But really have to hope that David Thomas is a good defensive guard, and that one of the wings - be it Jrob or Bryson , or next portal pick up can be a plus defender at wing.

Re-show him the tape of Golden / Cayo. They were very good from 15 feet in. Which did open up some wide open looks for Sherod and Francis. Hope Walz and Daughtry can emulat that with Thomas and Johnston and Bryson knocking down open looks.

really nice pickup. like others, I expect Daughtry will win the starting big forward spot (which AP should have locked down but didn't). think I lean AP at the 3 but he has to shoot better. that's a decent rebounding pair of forwards. not excited defensively though. Tanner will battle AP and will be in the rotation, plus one of the redshirted freshmen.

I expect Johnston and Tyne will start at guards. despite the size, I'll call Johnston my point. while he's a shooter, he does create. Tyne plays more like a 2. hope he starts hitting shots like a 2. Thomas will have a big role too, if not starting.

Walz and Beagle at the 5. think if Daughtry maintains his weight he'll be the "break glass in case of emergency" 3rd center over AP despite being a little short since he played that spot at Indiana State.

definitely needed to add some scoring and think we did that with Daughtry and Johnston. do think we'll still complain about our defense ... and it isn't all scheme.

It is much easier to see how players will fit offensively versus defensively. It isn't all scheme, you do have to be able to stay in front of our man and we had far to many players last year that couldn't do that. But the weak side guy cheating too much is scheme and we need to throw that part of our defense in the crapper ASAP.
