RIP Buster

Yours truly wrote this some 6 years ago commenting on 50th anniversary of the UR 1968 team win v Ohio in the Tangerine Bowl.

“…Those guys in the pic look like one rugged bunch who at the line of scrimmage would likely kick our asses today.

If you think about this collection on the team you have to be amazed at the raw recruiting abilities how Frank Jones and his coaches could assemble such talent. That season Frank ran the power I with at least Gillette and Livesay as WRs.Both of those guys were long and fast.RPO for O’Brien was not in the playbook although he did score against Ohio on a QB keeper by not pitching to one of his trailing running backs.

The basement level of Millhiser Gym was the football office. The practices were held where the Weinstein Health center and that parking lot sits as you use to walk down a gravel, bumpy road to get there. No River Road fields,no Robins stadium, no Robins Center,no flashy locker rooms. No Queally Athletic Center, only City Stadium and many away games.Frank Soden was our Bob Black.
The school never won any beauty contests back then(although it was a great looking place even then) nor did it even have 50% of the buildings it has today. There were Saturday classes. You didn’t need 1350 on your SATs to gain admittance. Our endowment was paltry, literally nothing compared to the $3.2 Billion today.
The school was in financial trouble.

The frosh dormitories were army barracks which sat where the Law School parking lot is today. The dining layout of Brunet Hall consisted of 1 single line of extremely limited dining options.Lots of green beans and jello. It was all edible but far from the multiplicity and spaciousness of the menu options experienced at D Hall today.Fraternity life was quite active and involved back then. Not so much today.

We were at very different place back then but with those many fine professors and coaches I wouldn’t trade it for anything…”
Living in barracks was an interesting part of the life. And Sunday meals (if you ever went) in the dining hall were a challenge to a man’s stomach and health.

Billy Cosh gets top job at Stony Brook

He is an excellent coach who will be deservingly heading to an FBS program as a head coach, in the not so distant future. I think he even has the potential to be a head coach for a lower power conference school one day.
if he can sustain the apparent success at Stony Brook, he might be a natural choice for JMU once the guy from Holy Cross moves on...

Go Spiders!

Tre Singleton - 2025 Offer

This pertains more to high school recruits in my opinion. I think the situation varies a little bit with transfers, particularly transfers who played at a power conference first. In that case, I think fit becomes the most important thing and other things like exposure, high level basketball, and success of program become less emphasized because they already tried at that level and would rather "step down" a conference in order to get more opportunities to play and have more of a role. Some times players get bad advise from people or want to shoot for the stars and play at the biggest brand name program they can at the expense of fit with the program. Not saying its right or wrong, but if they were to then transfer from a power conference, are likely more open to consider fit/role with team more in relation to national recognition of program. We do a great job of showcasing former players who have excelled under our system. Showing the fact that King won A10 play of year, when he was here only 1 year for us, must be a big selling point to transfers that they can have immediate success here. Between that and our NIL being very good for our level, is why I think we have seen such success with transfers in recent years.
well said - I continue to believe we should be a net winner in the era of NIL and the transfer portal

good summary, 17. fact is, we're not going to beat power conferences for recruits very often for the reasons you mention. we can win if a guy knows he's our top choice at a position and he might not like being the HM team's 2nd or 3rd choice. even then it's alongshot since the HM team can probably offer twice the NIL.

we won the A10 last season with guys who mostly had a bunch of mid major offers but didn't quite hit the high major radar. that's our usual range.

2024–25 schedule

Their women's tournament has always been way better than their men's. They had Caitlin Clark last year. They're just way down the pecking order on the men's side and have mostly focused on mid-majors, but women's MTEs were slower to gain popularity and they got in early and established themselves as a big one.

Interesting, well I hope we have made an organizational decision to not come back until they clean up their act.

2024–25 schedule

I went to check on the doomsday clock (46 days, 21 hours, 18 minutes, 47 seconds by the way) and got a look at the women's bracket which is easily far ahead of the mens side. If they could do that side right what was the hold up on the mens side 🤨

Tre Singleton - 2025 Offer

I have no inside information on our recruiting pitch, but I imagine it is a combination of the following:
  1. Balance of high academics and high level basketball
  2. Our Facilities
  3. Exposure to a national audience (games on ESPN, CBSSN) and success of former players playing professionally (especially Gilly who played many games in the NBA)
  4. NIL
  5. Fit in our program (essentially what role the player will have, playing time, etc.) I know we do this because newer players now have discussed how our staff showed them video footage of former players who were in their position before (Like showing Quinn videos of Golden) as well as talking about the accolades those former players received.
  6. Campus/Life outside basketball/location: Consistently ranked one of the most beautiful campuses, things to do in Richmond, etc.
  7. Success: This of course is relative, but talking about things like our recent A10 championship and NCAA tournament win
Another key thing that isn't a recruiting pitch, is involvement and connection with the player. Are we going to a lot of their high school games? How much are we keeping in contact with the player and/or his family? Does the recruit live close to Richmond and family can see them? Those kinds of things.

The tough part when competing against power conference schools like Northwestern, Wake Forest, Vanderbilt, Georgetown for recruits is they arguably have a better pitch compared to us for points 1, 2, 3, 4, maybe 6 (for example life in Chicago or Nashville vs. Richmond may be seen more favorably to a recruit), & maybe 7 depending on the program. Fit is a very big part of recruiting and for recruits when deciding on the program they want to be. So we really have to sell point #5 and forming the connection with the player if we want to try and beat these other schools who we are competing with for recruits.

Mens 2024 - 2025 Polls/Rankings/Awards

we are about the same at EvanMiya who has a preseason predictive metric/rankings. #150. Which ranks 10th in the A10. Torvik for reference was #146.

VCU was the top A10 team at 41 followed closely by Dayton at 44.

Evan must be a VCU alum right? 😆

not sure what goes into Torvik ... but why is ours so low?

2024–25 schedule

My thoughts are with folks in Florida awaiting the arrival of Milton .. but also wondering if this could give the Gulf Coast classic organizers a good excuse to cancel given that the storm may come ashore very close to Naples and since there appears to be no progress on the final 3 teams of the MTE.
I had this same thought. Seems like there could be a schedule reduction in the making.

Spiders Collective-Season Preview-Oct 4

I have said it before and I will say it again, Burton leaving was a win-win. As far as JOC and the disloyal outcast classification, I think that is an exaggeration no question. There are of course a few people that may have felt slighted, but there is no way the majority is going to fault a UR graduate for going with his best monetary option. What would have been extremely surprising is if Burton WASN’T welcomed back with open arms.

He seemed to drop off the radar, so glad to hear he is on the road to recovery and is spending time at his alma mater. Having former players back is always a good thing and it sounds like he is doing some good with some middle schoolers as well. Got to like it when a player gives back.

Good luck Tyler.
