Right. Who guards a 6'5" scorer on the other team? Shoot, who guards Erik Reynolds? We couldn't check him in Brooklyn with big or small guards.

I think last year Tyne filled in well for Hunt because King was a scoring guard so Tyne could be PG. So depending on how he and Hunt shoot, may see some toggling of those two to avoid overlap of skill sets. Maybe one with a shooter next to them in the backcourt.

I do worry about our D if we have 4 small guards playing a lot. Last year we did have 3 w King, Hunt & Tyne tho Hunt missed some time. And I don't think played together, maybe briefly. Now I do think Hunt and Tyne r pretty good small defenders, no idea on GW3 and B Artis. but what we had last year was some length to supplement them with Dji Bigs & Harris. This year we may not have that length or athleticism on defensive end if the 4 guards eat more minutes, or others don't step up. Dusan will be in there but as 23 has said we don't know what drop off to expect there on D either. Glou and Tanner strike me as O guys but idk. We need O too and we could have more depth on O. Robinson would certainly play the part but he's a freshman. It's 1 reason I think possible we see a little more of the 5s playing together at same time than in the past. It's possible they may be needed for D. Guards playing strong D in backcourt is great but I don't think they are normally a shut down guy. Think Goose. Dji last year. They had size. could guard different type of players. who will that guy be?

Will be interesting to see what develops but it always is.

Oops

Sheesh...Robins Hall also had a flood a couple of weeks ago after a toilet malfunction, and now Lora Robins Court was evacuated yesterday due to a gas leak. Eventful semester in residential life so far!

Yes, I am coming to the conclusion that GW3 will be a big part of what we do. Besides different posters on here providing eyewitness "shoot the lights out" type of reports, Mooney has said the same, and now reports of 3 3's in a row in scrimmage. Good, solid sized guard I think will bring a lot of versatility on the floor.

I'm on board with Walz at the 5. we've heard too much about how he's improved. smoke = fire.
Dusan will start at a forward spot.
Hunt will start at a guard spot.

after that ... I still have no clue.
I see one spot going to a guard between Tyne, GW3, and B Artis. I lean Tyne.

but the other spot could go like 7 different ways. has to a scrimmage soon, right? hopefully we get some intel.

X Factors

are you hearing more about GW3 than's been public?
No. It's just that everytime we hear anything about him, he is shooting the lights out of the ball. Add in the fact that he was the high school player of the year in Ohio, has the "wow" look from highlights, and just dominated at times makes me feel we need him out there.

X Factors

Yes...I do see Dusan as a bigger forward. I am positionless in that there is no need for a 1,2,3,4, and 5 on the court. You can have 3 guards, 4 guards, you can play small without a big, etc.

I do like having a "stretch 4" like Dusan, who is a tall forward who can shoot the 3, but when I hear things like "who will play the 4", that's when I say numbers don't really matter because I could see several guys coming in for Dusan at that spot for a few minutes. I could also see Dusan still being on the floor if we have both Beagle and Walz out there. With the talented guards we have, not likely, but I would not rule out Dusan just because he might be a "4".

Same with the 3. I get that we might want the perfect 6'7ish Scotty Pippen type at the 3, but so many teams are going 3 guards now, I just don't worry about it. We could start a "3 type" and then sub a small guard or even a big for him.

No doubt the 1 and the 5 are big positions for us. Some teams don't really worry about a 5, but ours has the ball a lot. I like having positionless guards like we have this year. I could see any of the top 4 guards playing point or playing off the ball.

So, I get some of the 1 thru 5 talk and understand there are times when you have plays and defenses based on "1 thru 5", but my main thing is you don't need to have old school 1 thru 5s out there with definite positions. You can sub a small guard for a big, a "2" for a "4", etc.

In regards to Bryson, not ruling him out. My thought with Jaylen, is that he is one of the guys on the roster that can provide what we lost a little bit in regards to rebounding and interior toughness. Honestly think Beagle too a bit, but my current thinking is that he and Walz share time at 5 (and probably not a ton of minutes side by side but who knows). I see Dusan as a very polished offensive player, and 3pt shooter, but not sure of his level of physicality, defense, and ability to rebound outside his area.

4700 - I know you are a positionless basketball guy, but are you seeing Dusan more as the big forward?

X Factors

Nice write up, 23. Looking at your 8 knowns, we have 4 guards (Hunt, GW3, White, Tyne) who will definitely get time, so I don't see any time for Graham. Also, with our 2 bigs, I don't see Soulis getting time unless he plays with Walz or Beagle. He could also get some time if one of them gets injured or both get in foul trouble.

The room for minutes could be at the non big forward spot. Dusan should get good minutes, and a healthy Roche will get time. So, maybe Tanner fits in there to be the next guy ready for minutes......or even start? AP is so unknown, but he has a chance too, especially if his 3s are as good as advertised. I know you mentioned Jaylen because of defense, but if you mention him you should probably mention Bryson too. If all the other guys are unproven guys, and he shows us something, it seems he would have as good a chance to find minutes as they do.

I would be very surprised if 4 of the starters are not Hunt, GW3, Dusan, and Walz, and the 5th spot could be taken by an unknown if he impresses enough, or if we want more size in the lineup, but I'm thinking it will be White, who has made 192 3s at a 36.4% rate in his career.

Transfers-Plenty of Ivy

One of the longest standing programs in college sports is coming to an end.

The NCAA Division I Council approved the elimination of the National Letter of Intent program on Wednesday, ending a 60-year reign over collegiate athletics as the binding agreement between student athletes and member schools.

NLI (not to be confused with Name, Image, and Likeness/NIL) served as the formal agreement between a prospective student-athlete to attend a school for one full academic year. It had very little wiggle room until last year, when the Collegiate Commissioner's Association approved changes to the program's policy that allowed athletes to withdraw for their signed NLI for any reason and without penalty.

This change helped pave the way for the new portal landscape we see throughout college athletics, but most notably in football and basketball.

But without a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and a school, what's next for the NCAA?

What is replacing NLI?

Vero Beach High School football players Demarcus Harris and Jahfari Harvey signed letters of intent to play football at the college level on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2018 during a National Signing Day ceremony at the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center. Harris signed with the University of Kentucky while Harvey elected to stay in Florida with the University of Miami.

According to a report from the Division I Council's September conference, the NLI program's core benefits and rules will transition into NCAA legislation and institutional athletic aid agreements.

While this may seem unclear, there is a prevailing sentiment amongst college coaches that this verbiage sets the stage for contracts between the school and athlete as revenue-sharing becomes the new norm in Division I.

I know, with the losses and roster turnover - we have a ton of X factors. However - I feel like we have decent amount of "knowns". Am expecting between Walz' steady improvement year to year, and Beagle's solid numbers last two years the "5" position is in really goo shape. Hunt, feel good about him. Tyne - at minimum will be a solid contributor on D and expecting improvement on offensive side. If healthy we know what Roche can do. B.Artis when healthy is proven commodity IMO. Even GW3 - I think he is going to be a good contributor shooting the ball, and hopefully other areas. Dusan is a proven commodity on offensive side.

My X factors as to whether the 7 to 8 spot or lower predictions come through, or we compete at the very top of the A10 again are like this:

Robinson / Soulis - Group these guys together because I feel like both are really high potential guys, that bring something unique to the lineup.
Soulis. As we know, was very high on Soulis last year, but he was not healthy. Slow start this pre-season due to health again, but no need to rush. I think when healthy, he brings a really intriguing blend of size (looks huge in team picture), athleticism, and skill (based on his HS tape). Would love to see him be 100% healthy and be so good that he gets big minutes - but if he can be a 5-10 minute contributor at some point, think he brings some unique attributes into the game - also think he could be an impactful shot blocker possibly.
Jaylen - Strong, super athletic. With the losses of Bigs, Dji, and Harris - we lose a lot of athleticism, toughness, rebounding and D. Jaylen looks like a guy that may be able to fill that role from day 1. Based on HS tape, he looks like a Kevin Smith, D Garrett, Burton type of athlete, and that can translate immediately on boards, defense, if not right away on O.

Glou - Probably the guy on the roster hardest to wrap my head around. Hardly any tape from him in Greece. Not much PT at Uconn so hard to say there. Have to assume if they recruited him he was a top 100 type talent. If that guy can show up and has the skillset at the 3 - think it makes us really really solid.
Tanner - If not Glou, could really use Tanner to be a 3 and D guy. Good reports out of camp it seems. I want to see toughness in that Harris/Bigs mode in addition to shot making. Just need one guy to step up and be a + contributor on the wing.
Graham - crowded back court, but if Roche is not healthy - could see Graham stepping into a zone buster role at times. Looked a step slow last season, but reports seem to indicate he has found his D1 sea legs. Great NEPSAC season as senior. 4 for two guy :):):)

Spiders Collective-Season Preview-Oct 4

Bigelow came back better, and Dji was an elite glue guy. I think that would have been a great lineup, but I was saying the year before we needed Bigs and Burton to lead and run thing through them and it did not play out. I think if Burton was back Dji becomes sixth man - BUT I do think with Dji in the lineup (as glue guy that did not NEED shots - it allowed Bigs to thrive and chemistry to be A+).

Spiders Collective-Season Preview-Oct 4

I have said it before and I will say it again, Burton leaving was a win-win. As far as JOC and the disloyal outcast classification, I think that is an exaggeration no question. There are of course a few people that may have felt slighted, but there is no way the majority is going to fault a UR graduate for going with his best monetary option. What would have been extremely surprising is if Burton WASN’T welcomed back with open arms.

He seemed to drop off the radar, so glad to hear he is on the road to recovery and is spending time at his alma mater. Having former players back is always a good thing and it sounds like he is doing some good with some middle schoolers as well. Got to like it when a player gives back.

Good luck Tyler.
Sorry i disagree. You can never have enough talent... Burton was an All a10 selection. Yes, his Sr. Year it all fell on him but he wasn't his most efficient. If he had stayed our starting line up would have been King, Hunt, NQ, Burton, and Bigelow. Yes, I know that Bailey ended up starting over Noyes, but you could have swapped out Big for Baily That being said, its time to put last year in the past and focus on this year.
