Women’s Basketball

Of course the men's closest victory was a 17 point win over UCLA! Both team are looking good!

This is great, I have a hard time imagining it, since I always see the 80s version of LA Tech…
Oh yeah, with Kim Mulkey, the current coach of LSU, who seems to be the women's hoops version of Lex Luthor.

Good Net spot for women to start. Roussell and team issue is they can't ever get a signature win, or even just really good wins by the numbers. Maybe SF knows, but what is their best NET win in the 4-5 seasons of Roussell? I would doubt if they even have 1 top 75 win, OOC or in A10, in entire Roussell tenure here. Maybe 1 idk. But its very very lacking that's for sure. They are incrementally elevating program but hard to take next step without a few of those wins on resume.

Davidson has taken that signature-win step this year, almost winning at UNC and then winning at Duke, which obviously killed us. Agree that we need to do that at some point to step up into the upper-echelon realm.

I see a win over #72 Fordham a few years ago, and a win over #76 Ball State last year, but yeah, definitely missing those top-tier wins. Spiders are certainly in their best position so far to do it, but the blowout loss to Duke was unfortunately familiar. Villanova game was right there for them, but they came up short.

Michigan State will be a huge hurdle (currently #7 NET), and then it's on to the A-10 slate where they seem poised to challenge for the crown, so hopefully they rise to the occasion.

Yes. Davidson is slightly behind us in the NET, but they are way better than us.

I like our trajectory, though. Roussell is a great coach!

There are big gaps between tiers in women's hoops. A legit top 25 team will often get blown out by a top 10 team. And a top 50 will often struggle badly against a top 25 team. So, we have a ways to go, but I like our progress!

If you read all the threads regarding the men's team, I think it's safe to say there aren't a whole lot of people getting much enjoyment from the team's overall performance. And I'm one of them since the AD seems to be OK with the status quo. And given that, I have gravitated to receiving much more enjoyment from watching the women's team.

Since Roussell has been here you can really see what coaching can do. Initially, they were absolutely reckless with the ball - major turnover issues. That has largely been fixed. This team isn't great at rebounding, but you can see much more effort toward boxing out.

Against Le Moyne he called a time out about 90 seconds into the third quarter because a player for Le Moyne had hit two consecutive 3-pointers. During the time out he lit into the Spider guarding her. And this was despite a big lead against a team that was overmatched from a talent perspective.

So, I'll continue going to all the men's games and getting what measure of enjoyment I can glean from watching, but I'm much more impressed by what Roussell and his team are doing right now.

I don't think you can be Bobby Knight these days, but this is a good example of not letting things slide. If you see egregious lack of effort or execution, you need to correct it. Despite NIL, etc, these are not pros and need this type of direction.

Lady Spiders trailing 52-43 with 4 minutes to go in 3rd. App State has made 10 three pointers.

Spiders finish quarter on 8-2 run 54-51

Spiders win in OT 80-77

What a comeback. App State finally cooled off from 3 and Spiders never really got going from distance but made foul shots late and in OT.

That was a fun game to watch. I tuned in as I saw the game listed while I was scrolling through ESPN+ looking for the St Joe’s/Princeton game (wanted to see if the announcers called Princeton, Richmond /s). After that game was over, I tuned into the game expecting to watch a few minutes, but with the comeback, adjustments, and use of timeouts I couldn’t turn it off. It is a pity that the Lady Spiders don’t get much fan support (very empty RC).

Wasn’t expecting this to be a tough game. App State has a decent record, but a weak schedule and got blown out by Davidson.

But the Mountaineers were on fire for a lot of the game and really gave us fits. Gutsy play by the Spiders to crawl back into it. Bad turnover in the waning seconds of regulation with it tied, but they pulled it out in OT anyway.

Next one against Liberty will be a challenge. Liberty doesn't have a great record but has played a lot of Top 25 teams.

Yeah, hard to get a read on them. Brutal schedule for the most part, but they did keep things reasonably close against Louisville and NC State. Q2 win in OT at SFA, and a decent win over JMU. Loss at NC A&T was bad.

They've got a creampuff game against Radford tomorrow, and I feel like that may be an advantage for them compared to us being off for exams. Spiders handily defeated the Flames in the season opener in Lynchburg last year.

Spiders absolutely rolling, up 21 midway through the third. Liberty is shooting well, but turnovers are killing them and they can't keep up with the Spiders draining threes all over the place. Ryan is 7-for-8 from deep.

Women have a huge game on Wednesday - playing in a 2 game even and they lead off vs. Michigan State. Neutral site event in NC, but a chance to get a good win vs. a P6 program on a neutral site.

I have attended the last 2 games in person for the women out of curiousity because they are doing so well and they are a very good team. We seem to have a lot of size and length compared to other teams (including games watched on TV). App State had a good gameplan that could run us into trouble it seems. Our girls like to rely on the 3 ball and they generally make a good amount of them - it is def a strength of this team. Shooting 39% as a team from deep with 3 of our main playings above 40%. They shoot it well and when they get hot, they get hot. But App State ran our girls off the 3 point line and made them drive and shoot 2's or kick out and look for another 3 and it made offense difficult. Not to mention App State had one girl who basically couldn't miss for a whole quarter.

But this team is looking good and if they continue to shoot at this pace and get open looks - they can probably make a run in the A10.

I liked the doubleheader with the men's games, but wish they would bring them closer together. Make it a true doubleheader. Girls game was over at 4 and then you had 3 hours to waste before Men's game. I know logistics is tough, but they play in these 2 game events all the time with back to back games - why not do the same for men and women 1 time a year. Women play at 430 - Mens game immediatley following. 1 ticket gets you into both games.

Michigan St. would be a big scalp for the women...#16 in the NET and got a vote in this week's AP poll. Certainly shouldn't have an expectation of a win and could easily be a 20-point loss, but this is our best shot in years to be competitive against a team like this. Time to see whether the season-opening disappointment against a similar quality Duke team was in line with where we are or an aberration.

Games in Cherokee NC, I saw Cherokee Casino and Resort was offering good room rates at one time, but not taking new reservations now due to event starting shortly. Hope if any are going and are inclined to participate in such things the Casino has Sports Book and offers one of the largest square footage casinos in the world, according to what one of the employees told me.
I have no idea if the games are at the resort but have attended several concerts at the resort theater and they have a huge events room that could hold a pretty large crowd as well I would think if they brought in seating (for all I know it has it).
Actually, wish it had been earlier in month, I might have planned a trip, but to close to Xmas.
I saw if you booked early the rooms were $99 per night, that was a deal, they get multiple $100s of dollars per night for those rooms at different times.

I was actually there when Spiders won their first-round game two years ago and had told my wife I was going to take Spiders and points on one bet and Spiders heads up on another but have never made a Sports bet and just never did it. Oops on my part, but not as much as the people I heard whining about their brackets being blown due to the Spiders.

Good luck to the Spiders, would be something if they get a couple of wins down there.

Michigan State 24 Spiders 14 end of 1st.

Update

Michigan State 42 Spiders 34 Half

Spiders have 10 turnovers shooting 38% total 31% from 3. Tough night for Addie Budnik from deep so far 0-5, if she gets on track could turn things quickly.

Michigan State 7 turnovers shooting 52% total 46% from 3.
