Women’s Basketball

Spiders not exactly lighting things up, down 29–27 to Dayton at the half. 2-for-11 from deep and getting beat up on the boards. Scoreless in almost the last four minutes of the half.

Few really bad turnovers too, especially at the end of the first quarter, although Dayton has more in that column overall.

Spiders up 60–54 with under 3 to go. Finish it off and earn a date with Fordham!

Townsend is so quick, good grief.

But Dayton's now hitting threes.

Wow, Ullstrom with back to back threes! Spiders up 8 with 57 seconds to go.

Definitely a revenge game for the Spiders. They were up 7 after three in the regular season meeting, but collapsed under Fordham's press and gave up 30 points in the 4th to fall, 68–59.

Well this is a disaster so far. Spiders start out well up 5–1 but then give up an 18–0 run. Fordham up 19–6 after one.

Spiders are 2-for-16 shooting with 5 turnovers.

Fantastic job battling back...33–28 Fordham at the break.

Missed opportunity though as Spiders had the ball for the last shot of the half but a lazy pass by Townsend turned it over. At least she got back to break up the fast break layup attempt at the buzzer and was fortunate to not get called for a foul.

Good grief, Fordham let Townsend go coast to coast for a layup at the buzzer. All tied at 51 heading to the 4th.

Spiders up 5 and headed to the line with under 4 to play. Let's finish this.

Couple of missed layups by Townsend were unfortunate as they could have more or less sealed it. Spiders are having some trouble handling the press here at the end and just had a lost defensive assignment on a Fordham inbounds, but still hanging in there. Up 5 with 45 seconds to go.

Spiders hang on to win 70–65 and advance to face #1 UMass in the semis bright and early tomorrow at 11! Doogan with 20, Budnik with 18 and 8, Hill with 12 boards, Townsend with 6 assists.

UMass is very solid, but took a while to get going against Mason this morning and the Spiders hung right with them in Amherst during the regular season, so the opportunity is there.

The Men should be required to watch their tape. Hustle, determination, going for rebounds. It's called wanting it!

WTG, Spiders! So pleased to support this program.

Should have an NIT bid for sure. Probably no chance for an at-large NCAA bid.

Tough year for them operating under an interim coach after Gaitley got the boot last summer. They were an experienced team with all of their starters being grad students or seniors. Some of them may have an extra year, but they honored eight players on senior day and don't know if any may return.

Another rough start for the Spiders. Got the first bucket of the game but UMass now on a 9–0 run. Three early turnovers for the Spiders including a couple of travels. UMass is quick and they're chasing down the boards.

Addie and Maggie were asked during the postgame press conference yesterday how the Spiders can get off to better starts and they didn't seem to have great answers. Plenty of time left obviously, but need to get this figured out.

Too many missed 3s....get it inside!

17–9 after one. Poor final possession didn't even get a shot off.

Spiders need threes to fall for this to be a game. Just a fraction of a percent behind URI for the top spot in shooting from deep in the conference.

Goes without saying, but can't win if you shoot poorly, turn the ball over, and lose the battle of the boards. UMass has been really good all year, so it's not going to be easy or expected to pull this out, but it's doable.

Excellent recovery by the Spiders again. Had some missed/blocked layups down the stretch, but hard to complain about a 2-point deficit at the break after the way it started.
