Some D-1 institutions have such low admission standards they can get anyone into their schools. Athletes, of good character, that can make a difference at a high level are limited in number and those that have both the abilities on the field/court/diamond, etc are at high demand. We are unlikely to beat out many Power 5 schools wanting these kids. We can occasionally find kids that "fell through the cracks" or we can try to "coach em up". Most schools, including UR, make some exceptions for athletes. The debate is often the number and level of the exception. I believe we have coaches that have proven they not only understand, but approve of, our academic goals and standards. For that reason, I believe admissions should give them a reasonable level of discretion. I'm not convinced admissions,or the Administration, gives the level of flexibility they should. Coaches have had the opportunity to meet the kids, their families, talked to their coaches, and others, they know these kids very well. I suspect they know when a kid is willing and able to make the grade in the classroom. More concerning is I am lead to believe the coaching staffs are not getting the support from the athletic staff they have proven they deserve.
