Why Starters will not transfer after next year if Mooney stays

It doesn't matter what players we could have had. Mooney still finds a way to blow games. You have a 8 or 10 point lead it goes away in three minutes. Seen it happen way too many times. Cause we can't rebound at all and can't stop the opposing team from dribble drive and scoring.

Yeah, they'll be legendary while never playing an NCAA tournament game...I'm sure that'll make them feel good.

It is ok to whine and complain, by giving your opinion about how terrible our coach is, the players, administration, B of D and everything else in the world, but please don't comment on the players views.

TJ said the current players, former players and coaching staff were like a family. They think Mooney is a great coach, are confident in the future and many expect to play pro after graduating. They also despise many of the anti-Mooney mafia. Not sure why some of you continue to follow the program if you dislike it so much and people associated with the program dislike you right back. Might be time to move on. Life is too short.

I clearly was speaking from my perspective. Not theirs. And I'm a basketball fan who does not want to see these guys not make the dance. They deserve it. They're good and could play on my team any day.

Imagine if you can a VCU fan who actually wants to see UR do well and have great games again that mean something.

I am by far not the only one here whining about Mooney and the administration. There are at least a dozen threads doing so and another created weekly...

I am far from a FMM guy but this last bit of logic is problematic. Your suggestion is that hardcore fans who don’t like the product/results they are supporting through tickets and possibly donations, should just go away. By that logic, you’d potentially dismiss a large contingent of fans. Is that really what we want?

Your premise is that people don’t like the program. That’s incorrect, people love the program. It just happens that a vocal group don’t like the coach or what the programs direction has become.

"Just shut up or go away. We'll find new fans."

Typical of the current program's attitude towards long-term hardcore fans.

You have the option of moving on as well if you don't like the criticism of a middling coach.

This makes no sense. Why would he move on? He likes and supports our team, including our players and our coach. He is not on here miserable and whining everyday, so why should he move on?

It makes about as much sense as telling disgruntled fans to move on.

Fans are fans, so be it.

My point exactly. And by the way, I'm a fan and alum of the school and the players, not the coach. I'm not miserable and don't whine and I also don't comment on each and every thread as you VT4700.

Same here @whampas: Fan and alum and I was both well before Mooney was our Coach and will be well after he is gone. I'm not sure why it's so hard for the pro Mooney folks to realize that you can be anti-Mooney but also 100% pro UR. It has been well established that Mooney is a good man but the last decade of performance has also shown that he is not the coach to lead us to the NCAA's consistently.

It's been 2+ months since the season ended and there is still palpable resentment towards Mooney and Hardt. Those who think things are going to die down have another thing coming.
Despite all of this, Mooney still has a chance to win his way out of this thing. Pretty simple equation for Mooney. Start winning more basketball games and the fans will be happy. If he can't though, we all know where this thing is headed and the path probably is going to get rockier. I'm not a betting man, but if were, I would tell you to buckle your seatbelt tightly.

Spot on 97. Everything will have to fall our way for Mooney to win. If we start slow, he will have the constipation look on his face and will not answer even the simplest questions from JOC. If things go south early, Mooney will talk about having to rebound, play x player more, etc, but will he actually be able to implement any changes with the team - doubtful. Can he do it? He has enough players and talent. Yes, could use a little more defensive and rebounding talent - but this is the roster he constructed and has 3-4 really proven scorers so he should be able to figure something out.

Can you imagine if we start slow? The pressure and questions from the media on Mooney, even the our very friendly media is going to wear on Mooney. Dude is going to have a stomach ulcer. He can't handle anything negative being directed his way. He is either going to go passive aggressive Mooney or he is going to retreat and hide from the media.

When someone jumps on every single thread, regardless of thread topic, and criticizes not only our coach, but our players, our AD, and our program, that is not being only anti Mooney. That is being anti program.

Our AD, Coach, and program all deserve criticism right now. I will be the first to toast them all IF we start winning consistently. As far as the players are concerned: It's very difficult to post constructive criticism/opinion during two straight 20 loss seasons without coming off as negative towards the players but this board is about as kind/passive/fair to individual players as any school message board out there. I get the feeling that some folks want a "if you can't say anything nice about the program then don't speak at all" moratorium on posts. We are coming off two straight 20 loss seasons under a coach who has been here 15 seasons. Fans and Alums should be ticked off and not swooning over the Emperor's new clothes.

When has the media ever put any pressure on Mooney? Not gonna happen.
He says things like "toughest OOC in the A10" and "we closed the season really strong" and nobody ever follows up.

Yes DaMan should go back to the men’s bath house in his profile pic.

It is still amazing to hear VT4700 who will be gone as fast as he showed up lecturing lifelong spiders on how to be a real fan.

Very true. They don't. But even the slightest pressure makes Mooney's panties get all bunched up.

TO me the kids are off limits. As for the coach and AD (the program is redundant in this, as it's the players, coach(es), and the AD and his subordinates), they are more than fair game. They're getting paid massive amounts of money compared to others on campus to do a job, and a very public job at that. They expect to get questioned about their jobs - they have press conferences and other interviews about the goings on. If they can't handle that, which is a part of their job, then they need to step aside and let a big boy coach or lead the athletic department.

I did not say they can't or shouldn't handle that. When a thread is about them and negative comments want to be made, that seems pretty common on a message board. But, how can fans call themselves fans and say they support our program when they take every positive thread that has no relation to our coach or AD and turn it into yet another negative post about them or our program? While at the same time, not acknowledging anything positive about our players and taking away from what might be good comments toward them? Then, after the same negative comments on every single thread, we hear the "of course I support our program 100%" garbage. Really? How is that being a fan of our program?

Yep. And Jacob will give us 2 in the top ten.

Two top 10 in league. 1 who could be Richmond all time leading scorer. Return of a guy who averaged 17+ 12th best in A10 scoring. Adding 17+ Ncaa scorer 5th best in another conference. A freshman who started 33 games 2nd most in ur history. Cayo our most improved player and 3rd leading scorer. Another rising SO. with supposedly all these bcs offers. Another who is our best defensive player better than all a10 gilyard per richmondspiders.com

How the heck r we being picked 7th & 8th etc? But if we get the breaks maybe 5 is our ceiling. Huh. does everyone out there think Mooney must literally be the worst defensive coach in the country? Something is way off. A grad transfer should be begging us to come into this situation and be a piece of a great team.

Yet even the most ardent Mooney backers on here won’t commit or expect an NCAA. Mooney certainly won’t even tho he’s said best class ever. This should be a surefire ncaa bid. Every reason to have toughest schedule in A10.

But all we get is a lot of big hat no cattle.

Who cares where we are picked? Why does that matter? Most people who pick probably rarely pick a team that went 6-12 in a conference last year to be near the top. It is probably as simple as that. But, again, I ask. Why does it matter?

Who cares???? We do, because we keep losing because Mooney can't recruit and hires Steve Thomas to replace Lewis.

I find it interesting. This is a message board. It doesn’t matter except we have a recent habit of finishing low as we’ve been picked. Coaches pick too. Other media follow A10. They r not throwing darts on random teams. Just look at what we have back and u have to think nobody respects Mooney coaching. I think the picks r way off personally. We r an NCAA team and if we get off to a slow start we should buy Mooney a bus ticket home. Don’t u mr positive think of UR as surefire ncaa team with all that returning?

How is that being a fan of our program?
Fans come in all shapes and sizes. Some are perpetually negative when things aren’t going well and can’t see the positive even in positive things. Others are optimistic in spite of significant evidence that they perhaps shouldn’t be so.

Welcome to being a fan.

Hard to say surefire being a mid major. We very well could be deserving and end up being left out in favor of a 9th place P6 team. Remember when St. Bona. went 14-4 in the A-10, tied for 1st, won 22 games, had 7 top 70 wins, and when they were using rpi had an rpi of 29, and didn't get in? If we do that and don't get in, it would be hard to call that a bad or underachieving season. But, no question, we have some good talent and I expect us to have a very good season.

Damn don’t know what we have to do to expect great. No big hat no cattle. No excuses.
