It’s definitely ok to be excited as long as you’re prepared to be disappointed. I also think it’s more than acceptable to not be excited when there are more recent examples of disappointment than success.

Oh, got it. Thanks mite. Maybe I should go check out one of these cool looking TV shows.
Mooney had a team of TJ Cline, Kendall Anthony, ShawnDre Jones, Alonzo Nelson-Ododaand Terry Allen. It did not make the NCAA tournament. Are we really supposed to believe that all of a sudden next year he's going to take a relatively similar group anywhere?
I'm done expecting anything other than what we've gotten the last eight years with him.
I think this is should be the most feared scenario. There has already been a large investment in coaching and there still is a potential to further said investment. What I hear on the forum is a desire to change the basketball culture and an administration that may be OK with the existing culture.if we somehow make the NCAA"s in two years and then go several years again without going it won't be worth the time and $ we have invested in Mooney.
I really think some of the recruiting drop off for Richmond and the league as a whole has to do with the loss of the Marquis names of the old A-10. Losing Temple and Xavier diminished a lot of the “street cred” the conference once had. VCU and GMU were decent replacements, but nowhere near as good.I think this is should be the most feared scenario. It seems to me that the drive that was present to “upgrade” to the A10 from the CAA has been lost and now UR is back to the previous level, where the NCAA chance is limited to “win and you are in”. In other words, the goal is to get the pieces together every once in awhile versus having a consistent NCAA tournament level team. I really do think the St Bonny blog post hit it on the head - it has been a major letdown.
Man of Straw!Yup, they probably get depressed reading all the negative stuff on this board. It almost seems like some of the people on this board are encouraging are best players to transfer to better conferences. That would be great, we could turn into a farm club where all our top players leave as quickly as possible. What great fans we have!
You guys are not going to like this, but Mooney has done a great job of holding onto his players this year. Unless someone announces they are going to transfer over the next couple weeks, he deserves an A in that part of his job. Time for you guys to bring the negative spin.

So reasonable question...isn’t that to be expected? They all said they had his back during the season, between that and a general expectation that you retain your best guys every year, I’ll give him a “Satisfactory”.You guys are not going to like this, but Mooney has done a great job of holding onto his players this year. So great, no more excuses. Time to actually win.
Except Belicheck is a known cheater! Was listening to a podcast the other day and they were talking about the incredible success of Belichick. One of his top tenets is "I'd rather cut a guy a year too soon than a year too late."
Obviously football players <> basketball coaches, but the overarching philosophy of not holding on to a guy because "next year he might do well" rings true. If he's already trending in the wrong direction, you've waited too long.
Similar to the business maxim "Hire slowly; fire quickly."
Well, he better be back filling this group with new recruits now otherwise we will be looking at another long tournament drought after these veterans move on
Good point. Extend Mooney because..Except Belicheck is a known cheater!
WHHYYYYYYYYY??????? This makes me think you are a VCU troll.
Easy with the big words, bully.A little sunshine never hurts. Admittedly, it’s more fluorescence and less solar than most folks care for but he’s working with what he’s got.
You may be on to something here. This guy shows up out of the blue this year spouting all sunshine and rainbows and completely ignores the dark clouds over this program. Either it's a bored VCU troll or it's an athletic department plant.
Says the athletic department plant.Or, maybe he's just a Spider fan who disagrees with you.
I love Gilyard's twitter page. Seems confident about the team and his commitment to the program.

Yes, he was all super confident last Fall too and then we came out and lost to Longwood on opening night. The players may be confident, but the coaching staff (the master mind at the college level) leaves something to be desired. I wouldn't trust them to make a ham sandwich properly right now.

You might as well give him an A for breathing. Under your logic Mooney did a great job at that too since he is still aliveYou guys are not going to like this, but Mooney has done a great job of holding onto his players this year. What do you want... a cookie? You’re supposed to hold onto your players.

Yeah, they'll be legendary while never playing an NCAA tournament game...I'm sure that'll make them feel good.Sorry, I have not been active on the board, but all the negative post depresses the heck out of me. Below are why I think they will stay:
1. Both of these guys have the opportunity to be Spider legends, remembered decades after they graduate. Grant is on track to be one of, if not the best center the school has ever had and Gilyard might blow by Beckwith as the best point guard we every had. Most people would much rather be a legend than a “flash in the pan” traitor that has no home once their college basketball days are over.
2. The team has a terrible record, but many of the losses in conference were close games, where a Sherod, Frances or Burton could have made the difference. This team is going to be loaded the next 2 years and win a lot of games. They would have been a great team this year if we didn't lose 3 starters from last year.
3. Cayo, most improved player from last year. How much better can he get? The Dude got game!
4. Players get recruited by coaches and most players getting a lot of minutes like their coach. The greatest catalyst for players leaving is a coaching change.

There are a lot of NBA players you could say that about.Yeah, they'll be legendary while never playing an NCAA tournament game...I'm sure that'll make them feel good.
