The Andre Weir situation is becoming very concerning. Don‘t think we have ever had anyone sit out before for “not doing everything we need him to do” or whatever it is Mooney said. Only other guys to ever sit out healthy that I can recall didn’t end well (D Will, Buckingham). And the fact that the original sit out was open ended and continued today implies that whatever is wrong is ongoing too. Hard to imagine what that is. Almost impossible to me that it’s a class attendance or similar problem because that should be fixed almost immediately. Also, this could have been dealt with without having to make it so visible, but Mooney has opted to go this route and I presume there is some reason for that- - which adds to my concern.

I can’t and won’t speculate, but very concerning to me at this point. Won’t likely mean much for this year, but we can’t really afford to lose him.

Anyone have any insight on what is going on here?

Are you not speculating?

Anyone else hear that he was spending too much time practicing rebounding & free throws???

Sorry. Just trying to inject some humor - seems like we can’t leave this topic alone so thought I’d throw in some of the greatest hits from the message board.

He also was overheard saying that Andrew White III “wasn’t really all that.”

How would he make it invisible? Lie about an injury?
Well you could do that, but I was thinking he could certainly discipline him and bench him, but not have to put him in street clothes so as to make it obvious and invite all the questions. Andre and teammates would know but no one outside. I am not saying he SHOULD have done that, but it seems clear that he felt like he wanted/needed to get the word out! Why is the question?

That is what I was thinking too Philly. He could bench him, while he still suits up. Must say it is a very very odd situation and only others I can recall are Buck and Dill too. Hopefully just an innocent mistake and if so Mooney's wording is very odd. Remember, he has only one rule as we know.

I feel like this is probably a veiled suspension of some type, but he’s not wanting to come right out and say it. I don’t think it’s a matter of Weir being told he needed to do something differently before the Morehead game, then him not doing it, then being told again before Kentucky, still not doing it, etc etc. I suspect something happened, Mooney gave him the punishment of X number of games and that’s that. I could be completely wrong though.

Who knows but my guess is something to do academically and maybe he misses OCC schedule and has to meet standards established. He looks interested when part of huddle and cheering on team. I was hoping maybe Crabtree would be in uniform but no such luck.

Darius Garret was in Mooneys doghouse freshman year and turned out fine. I’d be far more concerned if this was a ability thing rather than discipline which is what it sounds like.

If you bench a guy

I have no problem with Mooney getting the word out. He is being asked about Weir and giving as honest an answer as he can while still keeping what happened private. No need to give too much information about this. Just give the short answer and move on. You don't want to be dishonest and make things up. And, I don't think it's a good idea to dress him. Why lessen the punishment? The goal is to not him him do whatever happened again. If he is dressed, what happens when a player gets asked when they thought Weir would be ready to be part of the rotation? Or, if we have a blowout and everyone, walk ons included, played and Weir didn't? You don't just sit a team down, dress a guy who is being disciplined, and have a meeting with the team saying here is how we are going to lie to the media about this.

Weir is being punished for some unknown violation. Mooney was asked by the media about it and responded to me the only way he could. Mooney has had excellent relationships with nearly every player he has recruited, which a couple notable exceptions. I trust Mooney is handling whatever happened in the best way possible.

Much like other players who have disciplinary issues, the ball is firmly in Andre's court. Hopefully, Andre for his own sake and for the teams sake is taking steps to correct whatever was wrong.

Yep. Say as little as possible...keep it in-house...but don't lie.

I think if it was separation-level serious it would have already happened. That he’s sitting suggests an end is in sight.

Academics seems likely to be the culprit, although I wouldn’t put it past being covid-related. UR has employed fairly serious rules to boot students who don’t follow the protocols, maybe he has made some errors there.

I think this will pass.

We have no clue, lot’s of speculations, but if you were a freshman and you had to look Gilly, Golden, Cayo and Francis in the face how long would you try to justify your actions if you want to play on a good team?
Sometimes the best schooling comes from your peers.
