Vs Dayton

The only constant is Mooney's teams' ability to find a way to lose at the end. Whether it's a Davidson 3 from the top of the key, vcu's 2 from straight on, or Dayton's in your face jam, it's always the same.
Exactly. That’s my point. Not picking out individual players on a game by game basis.

What a way to lose a game! Feel like I’ve said that too many times even just this year. Idk who else listened to the post game show tonight but it was comical. Mooney and the crew talked all about how there should have been a foul called on the inbound play to Burton at the buzzer. Mooney said even if it wasn’t a shooting foul it still would have put them at the line and Bob responded with “wow great point chris”. Absolutely no accountability for allowing the inbound dunk play, just blaming the refs for not calling a foul. Even mentioned “we know we can’t beat any team in this league” which I also found hilarious. This the oldest team in the history of college basketball and still can’t close out these kind of games. Lastly Mooney’s tone didn’t sound like a guy who was dejected to lose that kind of game, any normal coach would be. Just an all around clown show and proves that he isn’t going anywhere.

My consistent view is that whatever you and VT say on here, the opposite is most likely true.
This one is a very, very good example of how this board can get totally ridiculous. Yes, we want Mooney gone. Yes, there are certain things in every game where you would have done something different tactically.

But to say this one was lost because we got "out coached" is absurd. We didn't make a ****ing basket. Burton was terrible. We missed layups repeatedly. And we gave up a basic alley oop on the last play.
Sure, it is just a coincidence that Mooney coached teams (multiple teams in multiple years) execute poorly and lose regularly when the game comes down to an important play or two. By that logic, there clearly have been some very bad players at UR in 15 of the past 17-years.

Of course, everyone with a brain knows that players have to make plays, but, when it fails to happen consistently game-after-game, year-after-year then you have a coaching problem.

When push comes to shove in important games against good teams, we get pushed and shoved, and we lose. The outcome of this game should not be a surprise to anyone who's been paying attention the past 17 years.

Have you completely lost your mind? Please explain to me how a game ending alley-oop dunk with no time left on the clock is not a coaching blunder.

Agree that Burton didn’t show up, but I think the alley oop is on Cayo. Cayo’s man screened Burton and there wasn’t much he could do to get back in position - I think Cayo should’ve switched

as much grief as Grace gets here, I would have felt better with him in at the end than Cayo. Grace is one of the few guys on our team that actually tries to play defense.

Grace has better post moves than Golden too, and he doesn't take half an hour to execute them. I hope he comes back next year.

Did not watch the game in order to protect my mental health, but sounds like this one was extra heartbreaking. I am very sorry for all Spider fans.
Yes Spidey, it was heartbreaking. We finally played a little defense, shot free throws ok, still out rebounded by double digits. Tied with 2.4 seconds left and UR coaches didn’t talk about guarding the only play Dayton really had left, Anthony Grant did talk to his players about it. We lose.

Agreed, and twice as likely to make a free throw.

By the way, what the hell was Anthony Grant doing on the floor when he got his technical in his ninja pajamas ?

Thank you, SpiderK for the run down. I am proud our guys made improvements. Too bad the conductor ran our collective efforts right off the track.

I don’t see this one as CMs fault. We just have a really bad pattern of being unable to close out on these games. Here and there we win one but too often we don’t.

we actually played decent defense but didn’t shoot well, some of which is attributable to Dayton being a good defensive team themselves. But winning teams make a few more shots.

Our back sides pucker up at crunch time. Reflection of coach.

We're right where we want to be... Needing to win four games in four days -- including, most likely, two against teams we couldn't beat at home during the regular season.

Offense stunk. Jacking up 3s and missing 75%, when attacking the paint was our best option. poor in game coaching, again and again.

There were a lot of shots blocked. More shots got through. They can't stop every shot, they must stop the launchers and the tanks down low. Leaving the heavies unchecked has devastating consequences for the future. Otherwise they will be encircled.

Worse charging calls I've seen in a long time.
Some Dayton fans after the game said the Spiders got the wrong end of the stick on those calls on Gilyard. And what was with the refs killing so much time reviewing footage at the end of the game? Anthony Grant got his way with a free timeout by questioning whether the last foul was intentional when a first grader could have said it wasn't. And thought he got off lightly on his childish flop on the side of the court with his arms outspread when he didn't like a call. No the refs did not cost us the game but the officiating was awful.

We didn't make any game winning plays. Refs have nothing to do with that.

Amazing defense for 59 minutes and 58 seconds.

But of course we couldn’t do it for the whole enchilada. Those final two seconds were a sorry excuse for defense. But of course Queally was at the win over SLU and not this one

I’m on record as being highly supportive of change, don’t confuse my statement above as any form of statement of support. Everything rolls up to the coach, I’m just saying that the team didn’t perform when needed which is a common occurrence.
