Vs Dayton

Golden was clearly emotional in the post game presser. I feel for the guys tonight because the effort was 100% there - just didn’t get the win

but Mooney was “looking forward to Friday”. They splice these videos up so much, now it’s a highlights press conference. No way that was just 2 minutes long for Mooney u can tell it wasn’t over but they cut it. I don’t get it. Maybe he comes off even worse & it’s a sort of a mercy kill idk. But something seems amiss in the halls of the RC.

Have you completely lost your mind? Please explain to me how a game ending alley-oop dunk with no time left on the clock is not a coaching blunder.
Positioning Grant on Holmes at top of key who does not shoot away from basket was first mistake. Second someone like Diji or Grace or Cayo should have been on inbounds and like someone said Cayo should have hedged or we should have held the screener or shooter cause we had three fouls to give. Mooney when seeing lineup should have called TO to reset players. I do blame coach on this.

Hell no. Burton is a unique talent and I love watching him play — he’s improved immensely over the last 3 seasons.
But the reality is he’s cost us a few big games with poor play that shouldn’t be ignored. Too simple to just blame Mooney for all issues.
No it’s not. It his team, players come and go but the results continue. You can’t fire the Team. Mooney recruited the team, Mooney is supposed to build a team, Mooney supposed to help the players improve. We need a change

Exactly this. He's had 17 years here. Every single thing associated with the program has his stamp of approval on it. He owns all of this. This is basically the third full recruiting cycle to miss the tournament under his watch. The same bad tendencies are evident every year. What more evidence is necessary?

Lots of game photos in this Times Dispatch link . are you the fan with his head in his hands in the last photo? Sums up the season............

We should put this one on a banner

Separate note, can we talk about Dayton's guard Kobe Elvis? No pressure on you, kid. "Thanks Mom and Dad..."

At SLU, at VCU, off the top of my head. Honestly, we had a pretty easy road schedule this year, come to think of it. No away game at Dayton or Davidson. The SLU and VCU games were our toughest away. And we still went 1-5 in all those games. Pathetic.

That play was absolutely poorly coached or the players ignored the coaching and didn't execute. No objection.

But we aren't there if we make ANY open three pointer for the last 30 minutes of the game, or any number of layups that we missed. Players got to make shots sometimes. My view is we lost because we shot 35% and missed 11 of our last 12 threes, most of them wide open.

Maybe our middle ground is that we got outcoached on the last play.

I agree we lost for all those reasons and being out rebounded by double digits again.

The last play should not have determined the outcome. I'm with Kneepad. We missed so many wide open 3's in the second half that on a normal shooting night we would have been comfortably ahead with less than 3 seconds left. Obviously, we botched the in bounds play defensively.

yeah, Dayton was very good defensively. as were we for the most part. Nick and Tyler rarely had clean looks. Jacob got a few and made some shots, but a lot of his were just a little long and hit back iron. Goose usually only takes open 3's but he forced 2 contested ones. I don't know how Crabtree can't get more time especially with Tyler sitting. he made a big play ... then sat.

that's uncalled for. yet again. it's offensive.

I love seeing TJ and Julius and Ryan supporting the team. and of course, SpiderDad. nice to see Dji get some time too. he was moving well.
It was great seeing Coach TJ at the game. By the way, has gotten skinnier than Sal?

The fact is that this team sucks at shooting. There's no way around that. We cannot make threes against good teams, and for that matter we miss an awful lot of shots from within three feet against those teams, too.

Against bad teams, sure, we make a lot of shots.

I promise I was yelling something positive to that amazing official 😂
Like your attitude, but sorry to inform you that now you have been identified the refs are coming to take you away - haha! When I yell "positive reinforcement" to the refs about getting more "ref training" my wife does her bit to silence me. Maybe I should take the Ryan Butler approach and sit a few seats away from my wife.................

agreed. Cayo may be the best smallish inside offensive player we've had. he's very good finishing around the basket. but his lack of perimeter shooting skills is a killer for our offense. if Burton plays big forward next year I think it makes a huge difference. or if Noyes is ready.

I hope Nelson is a shooter. Dji and Isaiah need to hit 500 per day off the gun this offseason.

We only have two guys who’s feet ever leave the floor and one of those is 5’7”. We just can’t win against good teams while using the “hope they miss” defense and “hope it goes in” offense.

Not sure I'd say we suck at shooting, but we're definitely not elite...70th in 2pt and 158th in 3pt. Pair that with a subpar defense, and it's not good enough.

Not to mention in the 300’s in rebounding

That’s a stat are we’ve lived in for a number of years. To me, that’s an awful neighborhood to hang in. Yeah…Am well aware of CM philosophy, but maybe I’m too old school or rebound impact appreciative to buy into his way. It’s a liability. Be better than that.

That game was frustrating on so many different levels. We played pretty good defense until the time it mattered most. Our three point shooting was off--another game where if it was even close to our average, we could have won by double digits. Burton was completely out of sync--don't know if it was the early fouls or something else.

Even with all that, I was hoping for the fairy-tale ending to win one more at home in their last game at the Robins Center. I even thought it might happen as the second half was winding down.

I should have known better. And the way we managed to lose another close one just epitomizes the season.
