VCU 1/29

My point exactly. They're Wagner and killed VCU. We didn't.

They also played us when we had freshman who were getting their first tastes of college b ball while Ace was out injured vs a senior team. There was zero leadership during those games. All individual play. Context is important. The team we were early on is much different from now. All our players have had to step up at some point. Now it’s paying off as they actually play as one unit.

Not getting enough attention on the Lambs board so you have to come here?

Guess what, we don't care what you have to say. Go away.

Yalls fans gave me plenty of attention yesterday actually. Got cussed out multiple times by men, women, and children for simply cheering for my team. Then one of your drunk fans tried to start stuff after Vince’s 3 but his wife made him leave. Oh and VCU fans all wore masks. Most of the UR fans weren’t. Always great having a maskless person getting in your face yelling at you while you respect the arena policies. Classy folks.

(Wasn’t gonna say anything but since you decided to respond like that.)

I doubt you’re confrontational in real life as most people use the anonymity of the internet to act tough, but after only reading a few of your posts I can understand why you were heckled. Best part about is you come on here and look for sympathy.

For all the complaining about the refs I don't think anyone mentioned my big complaint last night. Once again, OUR MIISSED FREE THROWS. Especially early. That alone might have done it.

I'm sorry we didn't have Bailey or Crabtree. A couple of other "pesky" plays or even one or two more threes would have won the game for us.

Our opponent wasn't nearly as good as usual. The problem is that we were worse than usual.

I don’t care about the sympathy. He responded the way he did so I gave it back. I’ve been heckled plenty of times as I’ve attended VCU at UR every year since 2008. I’m use it. I go there to cheer for my team. If anything those fans were pissed that I didn’t take their bait. Last I checked cheering for my team isn’t a crime.

If you are obnoxious enough to go gloat on the opponent's message board after a win something tells me you weren't innocent in these "confrontations" yourself, that is if they even happened and aren't just the product of an overactive imagination.

Great job on being the mask police though, you should apply for an usher job at the RC. Probably a big pay bump from what you currently earn part time at Taco Bell.

100%. This is what I tried to say in my post, but you did it much better. I laughed pretty hard at “great job being the mast police”.

Last I checked I responded to a fan talking about why Wagner beat us. I explained why the team is different now. I didn’t gloat. Nor did I do anything to provoke your fans (Need a witness? I got some.) But I should have known better than to venture over to this irrational place.

Worse than usual? We suck. A team with the kind of experience we have should never be 13-8. When you have a roster full of pussies like we do this is what you get. They don’t know any better because they’ve been coached by mooney their whole career. We aren’t beating vcu anytime soon either because they’re a young team and beat our ass again. What’s the excuse now too old?

Grow up guys. When you've become VCU's whipping boy thanks to Mooney, this is what you get. Get used to it, yet ignore it, it's a stink that's going to unfortunately be here as long as Mooney is here.

Sorry you had a bad experience. Most likely you encountered several frustrated fans…y’all have owned us forever now so some folks might be testy unfortunately. I had the same experience yesterday with VCU fans that I had with JMU football fans lately….they felt sorry for me and had no reason for animosity. I miss the days of (cordial) animosity. No reason for that when one side is dominating.

I think you are a lying sack of ... Richmond fans have never shown the type of energy or enthusiasm you are accusing them of.
VCU fans are the Antifa of the A-10 and every school will agree with that.

Antifa of the A10. Ok I laughed out loud at that one. Might have to steal it & claim as an original. The noodle arm comment years ago got u in trouble around here but u have really grown on me K.

I enjoyed the game and the energy in the Robin Center. It was great seeing the students show up. Cayo getting his 2nd foul early hurt us a lot in the 1st half by making it more difficult to score in the paint. It is also hard to win when your top player is 1 for 12 shooting and only 4 rebounds. I do not blame the coach for the loss.

How can you not blame the coach for that loss? We are home, favored by 3 and lost to a young and questionably talented VCU team.

Lots of good comments in this thread if you filter out in-game noise. Here are my favorites with PhillySpider summing it all up the best
This game is who we are and who we have been for many years. We are a skilled team. We aren’t athletic or, most importantly tough - either mentally or physically. Our players are who they are and basically stay that way. The coaching adds nothing to our guys. We can run a good offense. That’s our singular team attribute. Defense, rebounding, toughness, strategic etc are all a hard no. This is especially galling because I believe most of our guys play hard and want it, but Mooney has no idea how to get better. Just same old same old everything.

But hey we competed !

I don’t want to hear how we are unlucky losing these games. We lost this with horrible interior defense and missed FT and the worst last 25 secs strategy I have ever seen.

Mostly unforced. Don't block out. Move at half speed. Same old issues. Poorly coached. So what else is new.

VCU hasn’t shown me anything. Just scrappy.

Just spent 30 seconds looking at the box score. Grant was 7-9 while Cayo was 4-5, and it seems like we never gave them the ball inside. Rather we kept letting Burton and Sherod chuck up bad shots. The big men should’ve taken over the game. Sigh.

My tribute to 80sfan, the positives:
1) Student section was packed and packed early. Too bad they didn’t get anything to celebrate.
2) Definitely the best attended game this season - the sellout status was closer to reality.
3) Grant got to celebrate a new milestone and TJ got another visit to the RC.
4) The ticket sales strategy worked once again and the number of VCU fans was low and although they cheered it was just a murmur.
5) The team didn’t give up
6) There was an effort to get offensive rebounds
7) Spiders won the turnover battle by drastically lowering turnovers in the second half

It happens. I’ve traveled all over for VCU so I’m use it. I know when I’m in someone’s house especially a rival to keep it in check. odu on the road was downright dangerous alone in CAA days sometimes. I figure some of those fans(Like the drunk one that got pulled away by his wife.) only come to the VCU game and aren’t representative of everyone. You all will bounce back. Facility wise you all have one of the nicest arenas in the conference and have alum ready to support a real vision. I think it’s overdue that some changes happen in the b ball program though. I don’t think Mooney is an awful coach. I just think his way has gone stale and he isn’t changing with the times. UR needs new people in the program to refresh if it’s to be a regular A10 contender.

The atmosphere was very good as previously mentioned. Students showed up and made noise and the home crowd was into it as well. A lot less VCU presence than in the past. For all the folks that say we are lucky to have Mooney and we could do much worse I think you are seriously under selling our arena and even our fan base. This isn’t Rose Hill gym. We can attract a really good coach who can recruit and win here. The Robins Center could be rocking weekly but that would require vision and just a little ambition.

questionably talented VCU team.
If your team questions "talent" as much as your fanbase does, therein lies the real problem.
Rhoades recruits players who befit a specific style of play, is upfront on expectations, gives these guys a chance, and chemistry is everything. Each is far from flawless, but they are cut out for what you see them doing out there and they are given the chance to get better at their craft. You guys might not understand it, but you'll never respect it, but know this... depth and it's benefits doesn't just happen. It comes from the head on down, and having that chance to play instead of 4-5 players given 35-40 mins per game gobbling up all the experience paves the way for the next year's squad, and prospective recruits who fit that program SEE it for themselves, they're not signing on to wax the pine for 40, game after game, their first/second season. VCU will always hit you in waves. You might question their talent, just know this, when wave after wave of VCU players hit you on that floor, they have been granted the chance to improve by a coach who entrusts them with minutes during tough games- the second team isn't just filling in the blank til the star players are rested. Most have been slept on by the public at large anyway, everyone but their coaches.. the chip on their shoulders displays exactly that. Keep on sleepin.

Wow, with all of that being said (without apparently taking a breath) it's amazing that you only won by 2.

Not sure you should be bragging about how everyone on your team gets all these minutes when 4/5 of your starters played at least 31 minutes yesterday (Ace was the lowest at 31 and probably would’ve played 35+ if he didn’t foul every possession).

Sadly it is a real stretch to call us a "rival" to VCU when we win 1 out of every 4 games. A rivalry has to be closer to 1 out of 2. VCU totally owns us and it is embarrassing but we have no choice other than to donate $10,000,000 to the school................

Good post. The only additional positive I can add:
8) we didn’t wear the red uniforms

The students don’t like mooney by the way. Not that anyone cares but they don’t like him. I used to think the student body was not interested in sports but they do show up and make noise like yesterday and a few other games this year. A lot of that perception has been developed by the fact that our program hasn’t given them much to cheer about. Students wanna win just like anyone else. I have now started two very loud fire money chants while walking out of the robins center and the students got very into it both times. Pretty sure they view him as a pompous, arrogant snob who is terrible at his job just like the rest of us. Give the students better and the robins center could be en fuego.

Just curious. What can we do to improve?
I already made a few suggestions but a few that immediately come to mind.
1. Stop playing Wilson and give all those minutes to Dji and Connor in the future. Goose should play all 40 unless Sherod can take some of the minutes at the 2 again.
2. We need to press more, particularly when we start off slow.
3. If your “shooters” are missing every shot, then you need to give the ball inside to the players that are shooting 80% for the night.
4. Call better timeouts — Mooney never changes the momentum of the game at the right time.
5. Tell cayo to revert back to his old form on free throws. It’s embarrassing.
6. Gilyard should drive the ball more and look to dish or take his acrobatic shot.
7. Bench Burton if he continues to play soft defense. Might as well have Sherod in there as he’s a better shooter
8. Stop complaining to the refs after every play.
9. Need to win >60% of all hustle plays — we aren’t scrappy enough.

Somebody also said on here we should try a zone, but I haven’t seen it enough to make this one of the points. I can’t imagine zone being worse than our man defense though.

I wonder if having Tyler so far from the basket is the best use of his talents. He struggles to drive even against token opposition. Often he is either stripped of the ball or fumbles it.

And you think some of us has not ever received similar treatment at your place? There are good and bad fans on both sides and I bleed blue and red and true to my training from an early, age, I think all Rams are in the same class as Siberian Sheep Dip. You are a rival and that Is a fact and why I hate you but respect you.

What the heck was Mooney thinking when we come out of a timeout down 3 with 25 seconds left and we work the ball around the three point line till 4 seconds are left and the worst shooter we have on the floor throws up a desperation 3 pointer. If we drive to the basket and take a 2 pointer we extend the game as VCU was three fouls from the double bonus and we could press before even having to foul. Frustrating to watch.
