VCU 1/29

I’m staying out of the coaching talk…for obvious reasons. No one read into that either way bc I sincerely mean it. I get where a lot of you are coming from. I think loyalty is that double edged sword but we are by nature extremely loyal as a family. Is there frustration and disappointment…yes. But I hear you 23 and from a personal standpoint I don’t believe in cutting and running at adversity(& taught Dji the same) which so many do in todays game..see portal. I truly believe and talk to Dji daily about believing in why God placed him here. I believe he can achieve all of his goals here. We would support any decision Dji made but he hasn’t been mistreated, he’s at a top academic institution(which is ultimately why he’s here) yes he’s had to sit more than we like but that’s fuel to his fire. People on here can laugh, shrug it off, think I may be delusional & it won’t be the first 😂 but Dji has the tools to make it professionally, he just needs the opportunity. He can do that here at UR bc that’s on him not solely on a coach. Sure a coach helps but it’s on the player. I would have liked to see more of our younger guys this season but it is what it is. For me next season can’t get here fast enough bc I think Dji will have his opportunity…sure COVID hit, your coach was fired, you decommited from a place you loved, there were other bigger schools you could have chose but you chose UR bc you loved it...so we are going to be patient and see what God manifests. We have had a string of bad luck this season with the injury bug but again we feel like we are in the right place, i have enjoyed meeting UR fans and making new friends 🕷🏀
Good post. For the record, when I have been posting about not having a legit 2 guard, this is in no way aimed at Dji. I see Dji as more of a playmaker, a point forward if you will, as opposed to a pure shooter. The injuries and lack of pt are the biggest obstacles this season. Hoping for a healthy next three seasons, and I think he can do big things here. Hopefully with a new coach :).

He would be the only one to bring something different I suspect. But we’re talking four games, plus 1 maybe 2 conf tournament games.

it’s irrelevant anyway. UR would only remove a coach in season for an ethics violation.

i suggested the mojo in season replacement or even an outsider weeks ago. Let’s start by acknowledging they wouldn’t do it.

but if they were smart & had any desire to make ncaa they would. 1 the players have checked out mentally w Mooney. Lack of confidence no changes etc. frankly our odds of winning increase w change over the status quo. As I-m-ur said could fire up team short term. Players seem to like mojo. 2 u eliminate the miracle run by Moon & the dilemma it creates for keeping him. He should be gone w/o a ncaa win not bid at this point but now it’s gone from equation. 3 if mojo succeeds & we go on run & make ncaa u have a coach u promote on the cheap much less than open market search. U just saved a lot of $. We’d pay mojo fair rate but under budget. 4 it would earn lot more publicity than alternative if we did well. 5 if in your mind u r already thinking there is a solid probability of moving on for Mooney (how can there not be) then it makes even more sense.

again too bad none of that will be considered.

Agree that the move to elevate MOJO could have provided a spark. Seems like a great guy but then you need to conduct a full search for best candidate, no matter what happened in the small sample size. His resume as HC is exactly the opposite of what we want to hire, he went from 20 wins to 15 to 9 wins. He probably gained some great experience but needs to go somewhere like Radford and prove can win first

I hate posts like these. Dji averages 1 shot per game for both this season and last season and has only taken more than 3 shots twice in each of the last two seasons. How do you know he’s not a pure shooter?

agreed 23. All very fair points. & I’m on board w full search personally, I’m just saying from the richmond admin perspective. Tho I can think of a couple wet dream scenarios in the small sample size that would preclude a search.

Well he’s not. Think even his dad would say so. If he was a pure shooter he’d be playing a lot more. If shooting comes around he’d be dangerous tho.

Disagree. I think he has a good shooting stroke but we can’t judge yet.

I think he’s not playing because Mooney can’t ever adjust. He’s the 4th or 5th person off of the bench, no earlier or later.

Don't hate the hater.

I hope like heck he can be a big time shooter. I do agree that he has not taken enough shots in games, and also it sounds like maybe some lingering effects of broken wrist. I was just making the comment that his overall game looks like it is geared to driving, dishing, a throw back floor game - which is great.

Limited time is biggest detriment to getting in flow of game and shooting, but he only attempted 5 3's total, so have to believe he didn't have a ton of confidence to shoot them, and coach probably did not provide the confidence either. Just observing what I see, no reason to hate.

Fair point #23. Thanks for clarifying and don’t disagree with that… he has missed all 5 of those attempts. That’s like a Wilson stat. :)

I mean, if you look at his HS youtube tape, he can shoot. I gave Mooney all the credit in the world for signing him coming off the Wake decommit. I am thinking of Jarod Stevenson possibly? Didn't really ever score a ton under Dooley, JB came in and guy became unreal. I think Dji has that potential under a new coach.

23, I have never seen a kid miss a shot on his HS tape. I bet Cayo made his HS free throws on tape.

🙏🏼 I gotcha and no worries …we see him pretty much the same…playmaker is his moneymaker.

Ain't it great to keep reading in the RTD day after day how the Rams maintain their mastery over UR? Epps get so much more space than you do John O!

Too funny, yes Cayo was a shooter - good point. Dji made the shots and looked like a shooter so I have some confidence for future results
You guys all make good points. Dji has a solid stroke. He lost some range of motion bc of the wrist surgery..(same injury/surgery Lamello Ball had) so he’s still constantly working on getting it back but will never be 100%. He has always been an old school pass first playmaker. I’ve said many times he’s played PG his entire career and growing to 6’6 gives him “good problems” I like the rest of you all want to see him shoot more …but let’s take it one step at a time and just get more PT 1st. 😃 For the record we (me and him) talk about him being really good in every aspect but he has to be great in something, why not shooting. Believe me guys he’s in the gym usually late & on the gun …getting at least his 500 makes bc he wants to be the best he can.🕷🏀

Dji is going to do great things for us next year. It is a shame this year got derailed because of injury. I'm glad you think he is staying, regardless of what happens with our coaching. He has a bright future in my opinion.

Mooney does a real disservice to younger guys with such a short hook. Look at Randolph against VCU. He got in there, made a mistake (pocket picked at mid court), and was immediately subbed out and sent to Siberia. This causes guys to play scared/safe because they don’t want to make a mistake, which is a terrible way to play basketball, and then is ultimately a self fulfilling prophecy because playing without confidence leads to mistakes.

For the record, I wouldn’t criticize Mooney if he had the quick hook, sat the guy down and coached him up/gave him confidence, and then got him back in the game. Instead, if you make a mistake as a younger guy for Mooney, you get hooked and buried in the bench. It’s a terrible and frustrating cycle.

Lol, I loved coach Tarrant, but nobody had a shorter hook than him. Make a mistake and you came to the bench immediately. He would give them a nice New Jersey tongue lashing and stick them right back in though.
