VCU 1/29

What the heck was Mooney thinking when we come out of a timeout down 3 with 25 seconds left and we work the ball around the three point line till 4 seconds are left and the worst shooter we have on the floor throws up a desperation 3 pointer. If we drive to the basket and take a 2 pointer we extend the game as VCU was three fouls from the double bonus and we could press before even having to foul. Frustrating to watch.

Remember, our coach went to Princeton so his advanced basketball strategies are too much for us average Joes to understand.

I already made a few suggestions but a few that immediately come to mind.
1. Stop playing Wilson and give all those minutes to Dji and Connor in the future. Goose should play all 40 unless Sherod can take some of the minutes at the 2 again.
2. We need to press more, particularly when we start off slow.
3. If your “shooters” are missing every shot, then you need to give the ball inside to the players that are shooting 80% for the night.
4. Call better timeouts — Mooney never changes the momentum of the game at the right time.
5. Tell cayo to revert back to his old form on free throws. It’s embarrassing.
6. Gilyard should drive the ball more and look to dish or take his acrobatic shot.
7. Bench Burton if he continues to play soft defense. Might as well have Sherod in there as he’s a better shooter
8. Stop complaining to the refs after every play.
9. Need to win >60% of all hustle plays — we aren’t scrappy enough.

Somebody also said on here we should try a zone, but I haven’t seen it enough to make this one of the points. I can’t imagine zone being worse than our man defense though.
1. Both Crabtree and Dji were out yesterday.
2. VDU would kill us if we pressed
3. We really do not have an inside game because we are soft.
4. Yes, Mooney never calls timeouts
5. I am sure he is working on it.
6. Dish to who?
7. We all play soft defense, not just Burton. Sherod plays like an old man in a rec league.
8. Agree, it is a bad look
9. See 3 above. We are soft.

We need a culture change which starts at the top.

It’s so easy to be an armchair quarterback.
It’s also easy to simply say “trust the people in charge” and “these coaches know best”. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no basketball expert and I’ll defer to anyone who has experience coaching, scouting, etc. But I’m not stupid (my UR degree hopefully reinforces that) Don’t tell me 2 ncaa appearances in 17 years is good enough for this program and don’t tell me we can’t find a coach who can accomplish so much more. The level of denial and loyalty to this coach is insane. It goes beyond being rude…nobody is attacking Chris Mooney the person…but the lack of success is impossible to defend unless you are a friend or family member. At this point I simply do not trust the people in charge.

This! If I could like it more I would.

1. I know that obviously, I’m saying going forward.

Crabtree seems to have a good stroke and court awareness. I thought when the season started he'd be good for reasonable points, but he looks more like a role player now than a points contributor. Doesn't appear to look to score except on occasion. I suspect next year he'll add meaningful points.

I was debating 2 or 3. But if a 3 you need someone who can shoot on the move (Gilly?). And 1 or 2 in position for the rebound (Burton & Cayo)?

If not you go for 2, twice…

Someone may have posted this earlier I did not go all the way back but USUALLY when a coach gets repeatedly owned by the cross-town or state rival they get canned much earlier. His record now against VCU (they may be paying part of his salary at this point): 7-21--if I counted right from the media guide and this weekend's result.

But hey, offsetting that pathetic record is all our postseason success and A10 conference championships!

It’s literally the point to how we can improve. Crabtree needs to play more if we want to improve.
This team has shown us over and over again what it is. This is it. Many of these players have been in the program 3,4,5 and some 6 years. If they were going to improve collectively as a team, logic would dictate they would have done that already.

The die is cast with this bunch. They are a slightly above. 500 squad, most of their wins comes against inferior opposition, anytime they are up against a good team, the come up small.

Playing Crabtree more isn't gonna make any difference, the ball is going to be in the hands of Grant and Gilly at crunch time and neither of them are clutch players.

You’re probably right and I can’t disagree with your last point especially, but you likely cant argue that Crabtree doesn’t have more promise than Wilson at the 2. And if that’s true, it could only help us improve — look at the bump we got with Goose taking over the starting role.

I think you are a lying sack of ... Richmond fans have never shown the type of energy or enthusiasm you are accusing them of.
VCU fans are the Antifa of the A-10 and every school will agree with that.
Not true. Our double overtime loss a couple of years ago I had to listen to nearly 100 students sitting near the pep band chant f u VCU for five minutes (rams had a double digit lead at that point). Antifa of the A10? Not even close. Have been around numerous fans from other teams who had a good experience at the Stu. That being said we occasionally have some jerks like any school. I had to escort out a friend who is a UR grad after the game where Briante got injured.

Can anyone tell me about the parking situation at VCU...easy, difficult, best place to park....etc

Parking sucks. Get there early. I usually try to park on the Broad Street deck (over the bookstore), opposite side of Broad from the Siegel Center. Getting out of the decks even worse. So, maybe that is not the best place to park, but where I park.

I go to this game every year and I usually park north of broad street to avoid the parking deck nonsense. Usually plenty of off street parking if you’re willing to walk but need to show up half hour or so before game time. They also have metal detectors so be prepared to wait in line a bit. Area isn’t nearly as bad as it’s portrayed on here.

*disclaimer this is prior to covid*
Good spot to go to pre game is village cafe which is within walking distance of the arena. There is also Christians pizza and Bo Dillaz. If you’re a walker like me there are some better options further away.

Any other Spiders venturing out there tonight?

Normally head over there early and have never had issues finding street parking on Monument or the other streets off that. May have to walk a few blocks, but pretty easy to get out after the games.

So you are saying this isn't Mid 1990s 3am Gilpin Court? ;)

Haven't had as much reason to be in the area after 10pm recently but 10 years ago I would walk from Comfort to the Byrd Theatre at Midnight. So yes, not that bad then.

There may be some more risk with rising crime since COVID...

There is a parking deck behind Aroma Cafe (Hookah bar) but don't know the cost or how long to get out.

Also don't know if the Lowe's across from The Camel tows after they close at 9pm...
Yeah, I was thinking the Lowes might be a good spot. But I know they have towing signs up for Lowes customers only. Not sure how they determine if you are in the Lowes or not, but also don't want to get ya vehicle towed.

Just say you were shopping in Lowe’s for 2 hours and you’ll be good.
