UR still looking to add games

The reality is the we are a terrible game for UVA in general in any year. They gain nothing by winning (and in most years it will hurt them to lose) and we gain a lot if we happen to win - - - not only in the NET and similar rankings but in just plain old rep. Add in that it would be a HUGE, signature, build your season around it game for us and a another ho-hum non-conference game for them and its just a bad spot for them. Covid, travel and our standing this year make it "less bad" game for them, but they got the #1 team in the country - - don't think anyone can fault them!

I'm sorry, but didn't Virginia just add WILLIAM & MARY?????

The primary advantage for UVA to play W&M is that UVA can beat the Indians, like a drum. They are not so sure if they can beat us.
Exactly. The worst game to schedule is the one where you have nothing to gain but could actually lose. Top 10 teams try to avoid these like the plague! They, however, love the everything to gain and nothing to lose game. Schedule another Top 10 team, no problem!! Given their schedule, Gonzaga and Willian and Mary are good games for them and us not so much!

We are in a tough spot on scheduling. Not an attractive opponent to top teams based on rep, ranking etc. but too good to take a chance of losing. There will always be coaches with the "we'll play anyone" mentality so we can get some games, but I bet we get hung up on a lot when we call for games against P6 schools.

there's no chance we aren't willing to play UVA. we probably ask them every year.

if they would play us on a neutral floor we may just do that

I suppose Duke, UNC, Florida State, Louisville, Virginia Tech, etc. have been blocking our phone number as well. It's far more plausible that we're quite satisfied targeting the bottom third of the ACC for our OOC schedule.

You guys sure have a short memory, and/or severely overestimate the fear we strike in the hearts of UVA or other power teams. Between our 2011 tourney appearance and this season, we beat one ranked team OOC - an extremely overrated Cal team in the losers bracket of a tournament. The number of perennial doormats we lost to over that stretch is, well....greater than one.

UVA was not afraid to play us.....c'mon.

Mooney has said many times that because it's so hard to get home-and-homes with the P5 programs, his staff works very hard to try to get as many of them as possible on neutral courts. That usually means we're largely at the mercy of the event organizers and the proximity advantage of a UVA-UR matchup is missing if we're playing the game somewhere else.

Wake obviously has the history and BC was due to the football game cancelation. Vandy gave us a home-and-home, so we took it even though they stink. Georgetown and Texas Tech also gave us ones in recent years and Minnesota a few years before that, so those are the programs we've been matching up with.

How many P5 buy games do we do? Not that many...Kentucky was one that morphed into an MTE, last year we did Alabama. Then you have to go back a few more years before you get to seasons where we played Florida, NC State, and Kansas. With us doing one P5 buy game a year, if that, you won't see a specific matchup very often if ever.

So I think the broader question probably is, why isn't UVA willing to do a home-and-home with us? They've given VCU a couple in recent years, and they also did ones with GW, Mason, and JMU earlier in Bennett's tenure. So there's certainly precedent, but they seem less common recently. Maybe with UVA perenially being one of the top teams in the country now, they're less willing in general to do it, or maybe Bennett really does hate us.

On target SF and the last line really made me laugh as Bennett is such a humble man that if even really deep inside he hated you there is no way you would ever know it.

Why would he hate UR?

At least it's a logical question to ask. It's not like we are William & Mary who have never danced, ever. I know we are not on par with Virginia year in and year out, but we have been to numerous NCAAs and two Sweet Sixteens. I imagine that it's difficult to find two schools with the pedigree of Richmond and Virginia who are geographically so close to each other and never play. Especially in a pandemic with cancellations and schools need to fill in the gaps in a very short amount of time; and with the added safety concerns that go with traveling and staying overnight somewhere. What's the downside? It's certainly a winnable Quad1 win for either school, with no expenses other than paying the bus driver...

it's a long time ago ... think it was Gillen at UVA who came out and said he wouldn't schedule us again. maybe it was Leitao. he said we're too hard to prepare for, offensively and defensively on short notice. now that we play man to man defense, I'd think that concern would go away. and it's not like our offensive is unique.

I wouldn't be surprised if Mooney is always looking for home & homes. and I'm fine with that. every good team from a good conference should get a home game out of a P5 series. I'd offer 2-1, as long as we get 1. I know some of you would just take the road game, but if you do then you will never get the good home game.

Don't think we need to "grovel" for 2 for 1's....This season we are a top 30/25 team. Would play them neutral site or home and home. No advantage in anything less. Acknowledge P5/6 Conferences think their in conference schedules are good enough that they can be very "picky" OOC. Only have to look at 'Zags/Bulldogs to envision possibilities...................

I call BS on that. uva has had more success in the last couple of years. But we are even this year, and over the last 2 decades we have generally had the better team. They have not had much success until recently. We've had our bad or disappointing years, but overall better over a large period of time.

If we don't value and have some confidence in our basketball program why would anyone else? Better to dream big.

Aren’t virtually all courts basically neutral this tear? Secondly if the just familiarity with the building is important doesn’t that diminish the value of practicing in another facility?

KenPom had an article saying so far the data is showing about a 40% decrease in home-court advantage.

I call BS on that. UVA has been to 9 NCAAs, advancing in 6 of them, over the past 2 decades. They have won several conference regular-season championships (we have none) and conference tournament championships (we have one), in a far tougher conference.

Once covid has subsided, and Bennett resumes his annual trip to Roanoke for alumni gathering, maybe I can have my mom sit in the front row and pepper him with questions about his unwillingness to schedule us.

Let's keep it real. UVA has had huge success well past just the last couple of seasons. They have made the last 6 tourneys, all with high seeds, and 7 of the last 8, and won a national title, made an elite 8, and made a sweet 16 during this stretch.

Is this a UR board or UVA board?

UR board, but does that mean we are just supposed to lie about other programs? Or, does that mean we can't even talk about other programs? I find it funny that it's okay to criticize our program on here, but you get called out if you praise another one. Although other programs have actually been praised a lot on here, and no one calls anyone out for that. Strange.

Go Spiders.

Yes, in the last few years uva has been better. I am not disputing that. Prior to their recent run, though, they were bad for 2 decades. We were better during that stretch.

From November 2011 until now they have been good. From November 2001 to April 2011, it depends on how bad winning only 5 or 6 conference games in the ACC is...

And now back to us...

Former VT poster? Yes, but you don't know why. I can think of about 10 reasons that could true. Not sure why it is such a big deal.

VT in name? Yes, but you clearly don't know why.

Huge UVA fan? It's called respect. Yes, I love Tony Bennett and they are easy to root for.

UR grad? You better believe it and damn proud of it.

Go Spiders? Always!

No, sorry, but they were not bad for 2 decades. Jeff Jones took them to 5 NCAAs in 8 seasons in the 90s, including an elite 8 and a sweet 16. They had less success under Gillen and Leitao, but still made the dance under each of them, along with 5 NITs. Try again.

They are an ACC program. You play .500 ball and you got yourself an NIT bid. That isn't anything to hang your hat on. In fact as an ACC program, an NIT bid, is considered a failure of year, that's why Gillen and Leitao both got canned.

7–0 run by UVA to close the half gets the Gonzaga lead down to 13. Looked like the Zags were going to completely run away with it, and they may yet, but UVA at least gave themselves a chance.
