Transfer season

He seriously needs the summer workout TJ did. To me it has to be a question of dedication ; which to me is both desire and determination ALL the time . Hiow can you not get better to where Kwesi beats you out.

Have been told by coaches that Paul works as hard or harder than anyone.

It would be really nice to have 10+ solid minutes from PF per game. Hopefully injuries are the main reason he hasn't been playing. The only time I remember him on the court was when we were in foul trouble against Wake a few years back and he looked good in the minute or two he was on the court.

PF looked healthy and moved up and down the court well today. Needs to keep working on his free throws. That was not pretty to watch.

What were people really expecting of Kwesi last year?
Exactly what we got, not much. What really bothered me was time after time seeing him calling for the ball in the low post. Are you kidding me? CM didn't tell him only to set picks out there?

At this point, I'd take Kwesi again for this winter.
As much as I detest seeing UR killed on the defensive boards, I'll take my chances playing small ball with the frosh over that.

Been hoping that myself for too long now 2011, but I think we have to finally realize that probably isn't the case. If CM had PF penciled in for court time this year, why interest in a guy like JMA or an equivalent talent?

To bring a clone of Kwesi back, would cause me to lose all faith in the recruiting by our staff.
Has to be by far one of saddest examples of a big man I ever witnessed, but great voice.

If accepted, will be interesting to see where JMA fits into the rotation. At 6-8, 240 he should give us frontcourt depth and rebounding. I expect our starting five to be Sherod, Solly, Golden, Buck and Fore. JJ and JG first off the bench. From there, I see two frontcourt players playing minutes. Guessing JMA is in the competition along with PF, NC and AJF.
Believe Savannah is Jordan's sister; would be a good recruit for the women Spiders.

A few on this board have had a chance to watch the guys personally, over the last 2 weeks. Any impressions of PF so far from those who may have "updated"/recent observations?

The main observations I have are that he is not wearing any kind of boot or brace anymore, appears to be fully healthy, and appears to be working hard. I still do not see him having nearly the same skills or athleticism of Grant, but he does look to me like he will be able to provide better quality minutes than last season. If the transfer is better than Kwesi (Please make this true!) and Paul has improved (and is healthier) then we may finally have acceptable depth at center.

Also, I may be an "outlier" on this (which would not be anything new), but fully expect Solly to get some "back-up-center" minutes. If he does we will at least have a 6-8 guy who can "bang" (and score) in there, and that would be a much better situation than last season (forcing Buck to play the 5, even for only a few minutes, was not optimal!). We should have a larger version of "small-ball" this year. Would like to hear other's impressions of PF, so far this summer...

I was only there to see PF practice twice this summer. He moved well as you said and was running hard. Certainly not as athletic as Grant, but will hopefully give us some foul trouble relief minutes. He cocks his shot behind his head a bit, but releases with a decent back spin. What I saw of his free throw shooting was iffy. He rebounds well if the ball is near him. As TJ finally learned, he needs to keep the ball high when rebounding and driving to basket. To be fair I have not seen enough to make any guess at amount of playing time. He is a nice young man, Mooney seems to like him and like Grant he had the benefit of learning from TJ. Hopefully he will be a solid player for us. Easy kid to root for.

I am with you K, Paul seems like a good guy and easy to cheer for. I always say his h.s./aau highlights he looked like a Jim Shields clone. Shields really blossomed his last two years, but got a lot of playing time early as well. Hope Paul can get out there and contribute this year.

If the NCAA has not cleared the grad transfer yet, I wonder if we have some feelers out on Whitman. Who knows what happened at Kansas, but would think if he is looking we would be a good fit in many ways. Seems like the perfect one year plug in.

The point is moot, but unless there's some sort of exception due to him being a graduate student, I think Whitman's collegiate career is over. He was already practicing with KU, so switching to another school would be like a regular transfer and he'd seemingly have to sit out a year. He redshirted his freshman year at W&M, so he would need to be granted a sixth year of eligibility in order to play in 2018–19.

And any program taking him on now would have to be willing to burn two years of schollie for one year of play, perhaps without even a guarantee that the NCAA would give him that sixth year.

Notably, KU's top recruit for 2018 is considering reclassifying to 2017, so perhaps they needed Jack's scholarship.

I'm assuming he got a job offer and decided to start his career. he wan't going to the NBA or anything. probably a smart guy.

related ... KU has an opening to fill and now the #2 kid in the 2018 class (Marvin Bagley) is considering reclassing to the 2017 class. how exactly does that happen?! the school year ended a month ago, but he just found enough credits to graduate a year earlier than planned?

Scuttlebutt in college hoops circles regarding Bagley upgrading into the Class of 2017 go back more than a year. Only now, with him trying to get summer coursework done, does it seem real. A likelihood? That's still very much to be determined. That's why it's taken this long: the required coursework isn't yet completed.

Would he need the same process if he simply walked-on after enrolling as a typical non-athlete Grad Student? ;)

Was he definitely practicing? Is that the standard by which they measure this? Isn't the formal practice period not officially underway until mid-October?

Maybe it's just that he was enrolled and was under scholarship, which may disqualify him from going elsewhere now.

Yeah, he was practicing with them. Got elbowed in the head last month and missed two weeks with a concussion.

Self: "Hey Jack, how are you feeling during practice today so far?"

Whitman: "Great coach! Can't wait to play for the Jayhawks!"

Assistant Coach to Self: "We have a chance to get a 2018 5-star in school this year."

Self: "Still feeling good, Jack?"

Whitman: "Yeah, coach, like I said I'm --- "

Self: *Smashes Whitman in the head with a 2x4*

Team doctor: "Yep, looks like a concussion. Better sit out for a few months, Jack."

Yeah I'd be surprised if job related. 1 thing is certain Kansas should stay away from big men transfers out of VA. First Evan Maxwell now Whitman.

Is this thread now officially dead, since Jordan has now officially been accepted by admissions and we have no open spots? At least we can now be fairly certain which transfer will be playing for UR in the fall of 2017....

About all the players... do we know who will be playing or simply who will be on the roster?

You be the judge; side by side highlights of both Kwesi and Jordan. Open your eyes and be honest.

I have to hand it to Kwesi's videographer or video editor. He looked like a beast on the video and we know that was not the case. Seems the new kid is more versital on offense. We have to get rebounding or defense out of him though. I don't expect both or he would not have been at Rahm Emanuel University. Looking forward to seeing what we really got.

Thanks for posting the side-by-side video highlights above. That definitely increases the odds that posters will take a personal look!

The first question I have about Jordan is whether he is likely to be competing for minutes at the 5 or the 4 or both. The answer could be both. My guess is that the coaches will take a look and make this decision in the fall.

The comparison to Kwesi (above) strongly suggests that Jordan will be playing only at the 5 for us, and I doubt that. If he were strictly a 5, and he is compared strictly to Kwesi, then so far I prefer Jordan's hands, ball-handling and jump shot to Kwesi's (a very low standard).

5 or 4?
First, if we look at Jordan strictly as a "5," I do not see him adding value unless we have injuries. However, last year we had no injury insurance and no depth (with Kwesi) so the "insurance" policy alone is nice to have. This season we should have a much lower need for depth at the 5, because we have a rotation that can include: Grant (starter), backed-up by Solly (1st back-up), backed-up by Paul. If Jordan can beat out a "new-and-improved" version of Paul, at the "5" (I think Paul will give him a good fight), or anybody loses time due to injuries, then Jordan could add value at the 5.

Second, another point of view is to look at Jordan as a back-up to the 4 position (power-forward) since that might allow us to not force Buck to play the 4 at all. Without Jordan, who would our back-up 4 be (assuming we don't use Buck or Nick in that role)? If Nathan might be seen as a back-up 4, then adding Jordan may take "developmental" minutes away from Nathan at the "4" (which is where I see Nathan eventually earning most of his minutes).

So, if Nathan plays this year, and Paul is "new and improved" as I expect, I see the net effect of adding Jordan as neutral or negative, by stealing developmental minutes from Nathan. If Nathan does not play (and red-shirts) or we have any lost-time injuries, then I see adding Jordan as a very likely positive, as bench strength at the "4," and insurance at the 5. Will he "move the needle" overall? Even a little movement may win us an extra game or two.

There is no reason to think Paul will be a factor. He couldn't beat out kwesi last year for minutes, and he was on record with the RTD saying he was healthy.

I think he will see time at both spots, we basically have 4-5 guys who have the height to play either and none of them except grant has played a minute of actual game time for the Spids.

I am hopeful that Paul will be a "late-bloomer" for us and will show steady improvement and start to provide some "good" minutes. Hard work in the weight-room and in practices usually leads to productivity growth.

Those who are closer to the program, and have watched more practices, can likely comment on whether they feel Paul will be "slightly improved" or "significantly improved" this coming season. I have not seen enough to pick between these two options... I think there is at least a 50/50 chance that Paul will beat out Jordan for "3rd-center" minutes. And, Nathan, if he plays, may be able to beat out Jordan for 2nd-Power forward minutes. Too early to tell on either count.
