We'll probably be in the mix for a transfer, so here's a place to post news about guys who are transferring from other programs.

I'll start it off with UVA sophomore forward Jarred Reuter (6-7, 240). He hasn't played a ton but did score 11 vs. California last year. He's from Massachusetts. Good sized-kid. Of course he wouldn't be eligible next year, but is the type of bigger body we could use.

We don't have the scholarship to give unless someone currently on the team transfers. Difficult to have a conversation about acquiring transfer players without actually having the roster space.

I suspect we'll have a transfer. Regardless, we end up discussing transfers a lot on this board in the offseason, so I figured we might as well have a thread for it.

Marial Shayok also leaving UVA, with one year of eligibility left. Wondering if he will graduate and be eligible immediately? He's a 6-5, 200-lb SG.

Reuter is a big unathletic stiff. No thanks. Shayok is not a good fit for our system and not a position of need.

It's a fine thread if we are watching who is moving, I genuinely doubt we will have an opening. I just don't see either of the two likely prospects going anywhere.

Robert Morris has a 6'11" frosh transferring out. He's a 39% free throw shooter, so he'd fit right in here.

Oooh, the truth hurts. I think we should implement a rule, if you are not at 74.5% for FT's in a game, you will stay after and begin practicing 100 FT's Rick Barry / Canyon Barry style:

I am thinking about having my son try it, but will probably pi$$ him off.

But seriously, this works - though I bet the Barry's would have had a decent percentage chucking it overhand.

This year was the highest free throw % year in college basketball EVER. Players today are more skilled as a whole than they used to be. We were above average in FT% this year, shooting 71.3% compared to the national average of 70.4%.

we have 14 guys for 13 ships. even if someone leaves, we don't necessarily fill the spot.
anyone know what Grant's up to? is he cleared and working out? a lot hinges on him.

Are you counting JoeK? I think he was probably a one year scholarship, at least in terms of commitment.

This was his second year on scholarship. I've always assumed they were one-year "as available" deals for him, but it's never explicitly stated. But yeah, unless someone leaves, we don't have a 'ship for him next year, much less someone else.

exactly. and since he was getting playing time, I think if one person left he'd get the ship again. if nobody leaves, he doesn't.

Joe's gotten two years of scholies – two more than he expected when he came here – so if he doesn't get one next year for whatever reason, I doubt he's going to be upset. If we end up with an open spot, I hope we use it wisely. We are fairly well set at the guard position, so I can't really imagine him having a scholarship next year.

just because he didn't get one out of high school doesn't mean he hasn't earned it.

I'm sure his parents appreciate the scholarship, but I bet he appreciated the playing time more.

I appreciate your attempts to be nice to the players, but your strategies from this and another thread could have led to

Joe Kirby
Kadeem Smithen
Chandler Diekvoss
Kovien Dominaus

all taking up scholarships on next year's team in addition to a couple other upper class men that haven't shown much so far. We just can't operate our program that way if we want success.

If we have the so acclaimed very generous scholarship program, need, academics, etc. I assume those options might be available as well?

Considering we signed 5 players with 4 open spots I'm guessing that Joe was told he will not have a scholarship next year. Meaning that was always part of the plan when they put him on scholarship. So he will be back to walk-on status next year and we have still have used our full allotment of scholarships.

If someone leaves then we will have 1 opening and my guess is that we use it with a grad transfer to keep a spot open for the class of 2018. If we don't find one or can't get them admitted, which appears to be commonplace at UR, then Joe would likely get back on scholarship.

Remember we have no scholarship Sr's on next years roster, so we need to find at least one opening for the HS class of 2018 (hopefully Bryce Golden).

This sounds all nice and good and I'm sure would own Mooney some extra bonus points to get into heaven, but we have got to run our program not as a charity case for overachieving little engines that could but as a program that expects to win and compete for championships.

Generally agree, I actually think Joe can play, he is clearly athletic and his a super-high motor. But we need front-court help from an experienced grad transfer type, so if any scholarship open up, we have to look to fill it with someone. If we fail in that regard, then sure, extend it to Joe, but not in advance of looking at other options.
