I'm wondering if it's not Mooney sharing the info, though.
he just doesn't benefit in any way. if the kids aren't going public with their interest, the easy answer is "I can't talk about recruits until they sign". because you literally aren't allowed to.
 
When's the last time JOC wrote about two "targets" like this with any level of detail and we didn't get them? It may have happened but I don't remember it. He's not really a recruiting reporter who writes about every rumor. My bet is we have both guys locked up.

You mention he doesn't benefit, but how does it hurt anything if JOC asked if we are looking at Maddox, and he says yes? No reason to say "I can't share that". I'm pretty sure you can. UVA just put out a pretty cool video on Jarin Stevenson's visit, so if you can do that, I would think you can tell a reporter you have interest in a guy.

probably right. I just doubt JOC has his finger on the pulse of recruiting to the point of specifically asking Mooney about Maddox. he's a busy guy. more likely he'd ask how's recruiting going? anything you can share? and I'm surprised Mooney would say anything specific as he's usually pretty vague.

JOC does have a special relationship with UR since he is an alumni.

I actually would expect JOC to specifically ask about Maddox. He is a VT guy, and the company he works for covers VT so many would be familiar with him. I doubt he would have throw in a random P6 guy from just anywhere. Like with Funk last year, he mentioned him because we played Bucknell and readers would remember that. That's good reporting in my opinion.

He’s pretty accurate. But if Maddox hasn’t visited yet some unknown. He has visited the Goo Moos & I think Tony Skinn recruited him at MD.

Where did JOC ask mooney about these two guys. Not in article. Maybe it was off the record. I have some issues w JOC questions or lack there of in some pressers but he has plenty of sources he’s been on the UR beat forever. Could get from current players, other athletic staff, etc.

Of course. He could get this info from anywhere. I was responding to sman wondering why Mooney would share anything. My point was why wouldn't he if asked, but not saying it was him who did.
 
Those two names seem to have been floating around for a while internally as high-priority targets. So yes, any number of people associated with the program could have volunteered that info to JOC.

JOC is a reporter. He has sources and knows when to use them both on and off the record. He could be getting this from our SID, Mooney, one of the assistant coaches, or any number of folks. Obviously, it is off the record though. Again, good reporting. JOC often does a lot of rehashing of old news, throwing softball question to Mooney and Hardt, but this is not that. He actually broke some news which was not widely known.

Was he on the CSUN team that UR absolutely demolished a few years ago? That team was putrid. Had Ron Artest's kid, I believe.

We're getting a visit from Brown. Dude is on the Grant Golden plan...has played four full seasons plus a medical redshirt year in 2021–22 in which he played 8 games.
