Transfer Portal

Mooney says we'll likely take 2 transfers, possibly 3.
does that mean saving one, or expecting Burton back?

We've made the final five for Chavez...Oral Roberts, La Tech, Southern Indiana, and CSUN.

Maddox is the type of guy I am glad to see us involved with. A lot of experience at a higher level, in theory could come here and be a leader and scorer for us at a better clip than at Tech.
Maddox would be a big get as he has multiple years of eligibility and is definitely a scorer. I don’t know what happened to him at VT because he was a very productive player and then had some “family issues” to attend to and then returned to campus to never see the court again. Obviously there was some sort of basketball related unhappiness since he is in the portal.

Less than enthralling list. Can we pull the offer?
Yeah, I'll pass. I have to think guys like Benjamin and Chavez on our our B list, with guys like King and Maddox are more A listers.

So, if these B listers, are making announcements right now before we hear from our A listers, they aren't coming here. That is my hypothesis (or maybe hope) at least.

I'm curious about these "final" lists in general. Calling us a "finalist" implies to me that we are willing to give a scholarship to these kids. But I have a hard time believing we were just sitting around today waiting to see if one of our two or three remaining scholies would be taken by Benjamin or Chavez. So I feel like some of these kids know where they are actually going and understand where they actually "can't" go yet (i.e. in these cases, maybe Richmond) but just list some schools like us as "finalists" to make things look better?

Could be...as Dad pointed out, there's been little sign we were actively involved Benjamin. Think that's true of Chavez as well.

Yeah, I would bet our coaches would be the most surprised people in the room if Chavez says he is coming here. More likely we are the best school that has shown interest in him. Cause lets be real, if he chooses South Indiana, there is no way he is choosing a "South Indiana" offer over a UR offer. Mooney is bad but not that bad.

Correct, USI just began its transition from D-II to D-I this year. Not sure whether the "South Indiana" oversight is on Chavez or 336Edits though.

Admissions was what I was inferring in my earlier take. It is tough to transfer once and Joe has done it three times. Credits just simply do not line up especially at a small private school like UR with limited majors.
Admissions would be my guess too. Genuinely wonder though, how does a guy like this graduate? 4 schools in 4 years, I’m sure some credits transfer but doubt everything does. Do schools make exceptions and take more transfer credits? Would be a real indictment on the whole transfer system if a guy can play 4 years in a row and not end up with a degree

If Burton back & we take 2 transfers we still have 1 left. Saving one makes even less sense in this era of extreme player movement imo. Nothing to be saving for. Guess small chance we could still take another incoming frosh but the Fall is when we should have. I’m not saying take a warm body that doesn’t fit the team but that’s why we have a staff. An open scholarship is not maximizing your chances.

Guards - DJi, Randolph, Roche, Smith
Forwards - Noyes, Bigelow, Tanner, Burton,
Centers - Walz, Quinn

Agreeing with your math Gkiller. With Burton back we should have 3 scholarships open. Agree that we should be looking at a play now transfer. If we land two starter level transfers now, and Burton is back, you could bring in another high school guy. But I don't think we would be able to land a good HS player at this point, so to me, lets say we land King and Maddox - I hope. In that case we just go after best 6'7 and above guy we can find.

The JOC foreshadowing - if I recall the article basically indicated there could be transfers out if we land some targets in the portal? I guess we could say pre-emptive strike by Nelson. Not sure if Maddox is the score off the dribble guy at 2 guard, looks like he could be if we land him. If they think of him as more of a wing shooter/ 3 and D guy - we could still use a starter type at 2. I do think Roche and Randolph (like them both a ton and think they could both have good years) have similar skill sets in that they are shooters, but not guys that can score at the rim. I am hoping for King and Maddox and one more.

Darius Brown out of Montana State, was at CSUN before that. Was named the Big Sky DPOY in '22-23. Grad transfer with one year left. Entered the portal on Friday, so we're still jumping on newer names that enter in.

just seems strange that JOC would name King and Maddox without some inside info. we've called like 40 kids, and those 2 weren't even public. Mooney throwing him a bone? but why? what's the upside here? can't figure it out.

maybe because VCU has they hype of the 4 local kids possibly joining up? looking for something to get Spider fans excited about?

I’m telling you there are several guys that haven’t listed or tweeted about us and we are on their list. Not sure why it’s not being made public other than players just keeping their business to themselves…King was here for I guess you would call an official for this past wknd & I know he got that official visit treatment.

Could be just as simple as mentioning King because he was just in for a visit, and Maddox, not only being a P6 guy, but a guy from VT, so many followers would be familiar with him. JOC could have asked have you contacted Maddox, and gotten a yes answer so he put it in the article. No doubt they would be massive gets.

Because these are serious options who are making visits to campus.
Mooney is communicating with the media about important status of our program via backchannels, so yeah JOC got the scoop of who are real main targets are. VCU is bringing back Nelson entire AAU team and that is also being communicated via backchannels.

And if you don't land those primary targets, well then Mooney didn't say anything himself, it was JOC reporting it out from his "sources".

"Received interest from" has no definition when it comes to portal recruiting and could reference dozens of different things. For example, we could call up a player, have that player tell us he's not interested, but then still have that player list us on these "received interest from" lists to make it look like they're highly coveted. Meanwhile, we have guys coming for campus visits that we don't hear a peep from until after the fact, sometimes not at all. Definitely makes it really difficult to identify who our real leads are, which is why the JOC articles are better indications for us.
