Transfer Portal

Herein lies the problem with our program. Nearly two decades of 55% basketball is considered acceptable. Get real. Pro Mooney? Nice guy, pedestrian coach. Record proves it. Beyond debate.

What other school would put up with this in their "signature" sport for nearly two decades? Athletics at my beloved school have lost its way.

But isn’t this why we extendddddd him?

Here's your Monday morning transfer tracker update. I also included a view with just the uncommitted guys to take a closer look at them as well. Should be a BIG next two weeks in the portal. I'd expect us to have two guys committed by 4/30.

This is nice...I will say there are at least two names that aren't up there, one was just here this wknd and the other I think this week. Can't say who they are but one is from a P6 school and the other seems very solid. We have some more coming in this week I believe. Also for those that said we would never go after Joe Bamisile couldn't have been more wrong. Hopefully we here something good this week.

Thanks for the insight. Great to know there are other names not on this list that we seem to be making real progress with.

Did we get Joe Bamisile though? It is easy to swipe right, make a few phone calls with a kid, but I doubt he seriously considered us, given that fact that his former teammate is leaving cause the offense sucks and going to our crosstown rivals.

Also, we need more than "solid" players in my opinion. We need star players coming in the portal in order for us to be anything better than we were last year. Right now, with Grace, Goose, and Nelson gone from a very mediocre, underperforming squad last year, next year is looking downright depressing. If Burton leaves, we are staring at a preseason Bottom 5 roster in the A-10.

Hopefully, we can land a few studs in the portal, but this is Mooney were are talking about here. We all know better than that.

You are wrong on this part...can't say what happened but we were a legit landing spot.

Thanks for the scoop sdad. I think Basimile is an all A10 type of player, based on what I saw from him previously. Seems like he was stuck behind guys at Oklahoma, but from what I recall, big SG, could shoot it and athletic. Double whammy that he went to Odom and VCU. The multiple schools is a concern, but very well could be a story that we are not aware of, and these are young guys - and they get bad advise sometimes that they follow.

MDspider8, appreciate the efforts!!

Def a story...mentioned in another thread. I'm pretty sure he had coaching changes at each school he was at. He also has a very sick family member and this is the reason he needed to come back home. I believe he had to apply for a hardship waiver but should get it based on family situation...but you never know about the NCAA they aren't very consistent. Had solid battles with Joe throughout AAU.

The unfortunate bottom line seems to be that when Richmond players want to come home or play for their "hometown" team, almost none of them think of us. They all want to go across town – even when there's a brand new coach and almost no one on the roster. They'd rather start from scratch there than buy into the "consistency and stability" we allegedly have here. And I imagine that if vcu had made Nelson a legit offer the first time around, he would have gone there to begin with instead of here.

This is what we have lost over the years by failing to capitalize on the Sweet 16 run and then failing to capitalize on last year's NCAA run.

I def wouldn't put it that way. There are more details...
I'm sure there are details that we don't know, but the fact remains, we didn't land him. Which is the story of Mooney, a day late, a dollar short, a missed recruit here, a bad coach decision there. Been that way for most of his 18 years. It's a pattern that fans are well aware of now.

I'm personally just exhausted by it. Those of us who have been here for the entire Mooney tenure know that life truly does not get better until both he and Hardt are gone. Neither of them are equipped to take our program to a place, where we think it could and should be, but they sure as heck like UR's money for trying to do what they are incapable of doing.

Yes, the stability is way over rated with Mooney. It's called molasses slow to adapt, culture of comfort, and lack of self scout/awareness.

As previously hashed and re-hashed, the dummies on this board saw the match up zone lose it's effectiveness year over year, with mismatches used and abused by opposing coaches. The official word was that it took a few years to learn, so guys could not get it. Rocket science, RIGHT. Finally, finally it got scrapped. Always seem a few years behind the trends and curves.

If we can land a couple really good scoring threats and Burton comes back, we will have some optimism based on the players this season. But I am with 97, it is exhausting being a fan, Mooney just seems to be able to miss or lose and their is always an excuse. I think my favorite is the kid who went to Tulsa, he commits. We feel good b/c we see coaches visiting with him after he commits - to seemingly just ensure that we are keeping in contact and crossing t's. We can show him Geriot, TJ, Golden and the numbers how this is the perfect basketball fit. Then he decommits to a program that is in worse shape. BUT he might have wanted to play closer to home, or some other excuse. EXHAUSTING.

Could be NIL/money related? 🤷🏼‍♂️ I know if I was 20 it would be hard to pass up a big pay day regardless of the other circumstances.

ok what are the details then? He isn't coming here, the ship has sailed so what's the harm in telling the "full story" if it supposedly puts our program in a better light somehow (that seems to be what you are suggesting)
I completely get Sdad can't tell. BUT WHATEVER it is , it is just another EXCUSE.

Could be admissions. EXCUSE. 80's fan came on here and told us no longer an issue on our leafy campus.

Here are some of the possibilities:
• vcu has a better history of winning than we do;
• he has some personal connection to vcu that he doesn't have to UR/his sick family member is a vcu person;
• vcu paid him more than we would have;
• Nelson and the other 2 guys he played with in AAU all decided they were going to vcu together;
• Nelson told him not to come to UR for the same reasons he is transferring out;
• he didn't want to be part of another transition year.

Yet at the same time UR80sfan also said Bamisile would not have gotten into UR

Admissions was what I was inferring in my earlier take. It is tough to transfer once and Joe has done it three times. Credits just simply do not line up especially at a small private school like UR with limited majors.

Those are all solid points, so it is time for complete change, start over from scratch. I have heard since my youth that if continue to do the same things over and over again, you will get the same results again and again!!

Remember Mooney has said our #1 recruiting area is Richmond. That u have to own Richmond first something along those lines but it's definitely been stated by him. & that we've had someone from Richmond area on roster every year of his tenure. VCU is like um yeah we can kill that whenever we want to. What do they say "We run Richmond" after they beat us by double digits regularly.

maybe that is why he went after Bamisile to keep his Richmond thing alive. idk but I was skeptical of us considering a Bamisile type bc normally would not be in Richmond's M.O.

Hey we still have Robbie Beran out there. Go get him Moon and u can take back Richmond lol. But yeah we could really use him too.

Jalen Benjamin decision coming today. We are a finalist alongside Santa Clara, UNCW, and Duquesne.

Beran visited Miami this weekend. I'm sure he's going to opt to come home and play for us rather than a Final Four team.
Miami also has the best NIL around. I'm sure we can and probably have but a line in the water, but our bait is just not very enticing.

I will say this...We know Jalen and his dad well. Haven't heard of him being on campus and if I'm willing to guess, he may end up at UNCW maybe bc of the NC State connection. But highly doubt its us.

Not that it means anything for our chances, but there seem to be some questions about whether Ruiz is even going to be able pay the millions in NIL he's promised. His company has delayed filing its annual report saying previous financial statements can't be trusted, and the stock price has collapsed.

But look how close he was w Bamisile! No way he gets denied by another Richmonder with how much a focus and strength it is of Mooney's.

This gave me the best laugh of the day so far. That would be funny if the players start suing him. It's a wacky NIL world.

Well crap. A dude who looks like a good fit for what we do. Care to share any info on who we have had on campus recently. Not sure what that would be a state secret or anything but understand if you don't want to share as well.

Jalen is def a dog and fits, but we can always hold out hope😀…I’m not sure of everyone but I’m not sure I should say the ones I do know of…Idk if it’s top secret or not so I’ll stay quiet.

Good three-point shooter two years ago (43%), not so much this season (31%). Definitely a scorer. Might be a Blake Francis type guy?
