The Fight in Ukraine and its Heroes

"Millions have died unnecessarily" BECAUSE RUSSIA INVADED THE GODDAMN COUNTRY. What in the actual $@!? is he even talking about? Pathetic excuse for a human, much less president.

I suppose he thinks that if Ukraine had agreed to be a Russian province immediately then there would have been less deaths. Maybe that is his idea of a business negotiation?

You realize Ukraine started the conflict when they moved their country east of Berlin…

From the National Review... this explains Trump's hostility to Ukraine. Trump is mercurial and petty.

"I instead am going to draw a much straighter, cleaner line to explain Donald Trump’s ferocious hostility toward Ukraine and Zelensky. Donald Trump was once impeached over Ukraine and Zelensky. ....

It’s really that simple. His tone can be explained by personal history more than anything else. Back in 2019, Donald Trump’s presidency — already under siege after a brutal midterm election in the House — was derailed by what he considers to be a spurious impeachment attempt by the Democrats. Trump was arraigned for improperly “interfering with the 2020 election” by pressuring Zelensky to probe the details of Hunter and Joe Biden’s financial entanglements with their government...

From a separate article...

So forgive me if I doubt that Trump is just negotiating like a “great dealmaker” or playing the geopolitical game of a chessmaster by keeping Americans and Europeans alike shockingly off-guard with his intemperate public rhetoric....

Trump is incapable of seeing straight when it comes to America’s long-term national interests in Ukraine, as compared to his private resentments there. ... I have always doubted him on this score, which is why I have always doubted his ability to serve the national interest when it conflicted with his own.

Republican Senators are getting death threats if they don't do what Trump wants. Not shocking, but they knew what they were getting when they didn't put another candidate forward. Or were they getting death threats then, too? Regardless, our country is being run by a mob leader.

This is a very Reaganesque view of the war in Ukraine.

"My fellow Americans,I speak to you today not as a Republican, not as a Democrat, but as an American who believes in freedom, in democracy, and in the sacred duty we have to stand against tyranny wherever it may rise.
For decades, the United States has been a shining city on a hill—a beacon of hope for those oppressed, a defender of liberty, and a friend to those who fight for their own freedom. That is who we are. That is who we have always been. And that is who we must remain.
Today, we see a tyrant in Moscow—Vladimir Putin, a man who mourns the fall of the Soviet Union, not because he seeks peace, but because he longs for empire. A man who crushes dissent, silences opponents, and wages war against a free and sovereign Ukraine.
And yet, we hear voices here at home—some even within our own party—who would rather appease this dictator than oppose him. Who would rather shake his hand than stand firm against his aggression. Who mock and belittle a man like President Zelensky, not because he has failed, but because he has dared to succeed. Because he has dared to resist. Because he has dared to stand on his feet and say, not today, not ever!Let me be clear: America does not cower before tyrants. America does not abandon its allies. America does not betray those who fight for the very ideals upon which this nation was founded.
Some would have us turn inward, retreat from the world stage, and cozy up to those who despise our way of life. But we have seen this story before, and we know how it ends. Weakness invites aggression. Silence encourages oppression. And appeasement? Appeasement is but a prelude to disaster.
So I ask you, my fellow Americans: Shall we stand with the man who jails his critics, poisons his opponents, and invades his neighbors? Or shall we stand with the man who fights—not for conquest, but for the right of his people to live in peace and liberty? If America is to remain the last, best hope of Earth, we must choose wisely. Because the free world still looks to us, as it always has. And I say, as I have always said: Mr. Putin, we will not yield. And Mr. Zelensky, we stand with you.

God bless you, and God bless the United States of America"

I'm sure most of these Republican Senators know just how bad Hegseth, Gabbart, Kennedy and Patel are for their respective positions. They are the worst appointees in history for each position, the Republican Senators have to be afraid for their and/or their family's safety to vote these people in. Most politicians are power hungry, its very discouraging that the Senators and House members are willing to do whatever Trump wants, they no longer have any power and are willing to just give it up. I guess death threats against them and their family explain it.

Let all this play out before making judgments based on political preferences. Judge results.

If recent actions move us forward as a country, I'm all for it regardless of who is responsible.

I don't object to the idea of something like DOGE. I do object to it having the same name as Elon Musk's crypto currency. I do object to hiring him -- the world's richest person and someone also holds countless government contracts -- and giving him and a bunch of high school nerds the ability to oversee it. Convenient, too, that he's not investigating or cutting funding that goes to his companies. Do we really need to go to Mars? Does Elon Musk deserve to get billions of dollars from the federal government? Why is no one bothered by that?

I also object to slashing funding immediately without a clear sense of what or why they are slashing, which has been evident repeatedly as they fire a bunch of people, then realize what they actually do and scramble to try to hire them back. We get it, you allegedly want to cut spending. Fine. Do it in a normal way, phase things out, give people some warning and the chance to find new jobs. Don't fire people who are labeled "probationary" when you don't realize that people who have been promoted are labeled that way for a year.

These are just asinine, inexcusable actions. I won't even call them mistakes because they're doing them all intentionally, just in a clueless fashion.

The companies owned by Musk average receiving 8 million dollars a day from the federal government, and he's in charge of cutting waste from our government spending? He's unelected, has not been approved for anything by the Senate, and has the mentality of a 7th grader (just like Trump), as evidenced by his bringing a chainsaw as a prop to his CPAC appearance yesterday. I guess he thinks its funny, while the people he has fired for no cause and no notice have lost their incomes and no doubt have children, mortgages or rent, and all the other expenses associated with living. He has just indiscriminately chosen these people to be fired, and has no idea if they were awful or great employees. He and his little computer twerps have no idea how to cut waste and inefficiency, they are not forensic accountants or auditors. Plus he claims to have found fraud, okay so if that's the case tell us what the fraud is and start criminal cases against those defrauding the government. All I've heard is that social security was being paid to 150 year old people (determined to be a lie) and that US Aid was sending $50 million ($100 million per Trump) for condoms to Hamas, another claim determined to be a lie. Musk may be the richest man in the world, but he thinks he is God, his role in trying to accomplish a legitimate goal, cutting government waste and inefficiency, is disgraceful.

And Musk gets to amplify all of these lies (most of which I'm sure he knows are lies already) on Twitter, and because he has the most followers and many people are idiots, they become accepted "truths" by half the nation. Meanwhile, the beauty queen reject Trump hired as his White House press secretary has the nerve to get on her high horse talking about how they are going to call out lies from "the media" (like the AP choosing to continue calling it the Gulf of Mexico, because that's what it is), yet she has no interest in calling out actual lies from within the administration.

The hypocrisy and idiocy knows no bounds.

There are idiots all around. You'd think a party who calls men women and women men, pushes for changing the names of schools, military bases, law schools and dormitories wouldn't have a problem calling the gulf by a different name. It's all in perspective.

Really, you are going to compare these relatively minor things with what the Republicans are doing? I don't necessarily agree with some or most of these things that you are complaining about but how can you compare these things with what Trump and Musk are doing? I could give a rat's ass about the name of the Gulf of Mexico, surprised Trump hasn't named it the Gulf of Trump, although his Barbie press secretary sure makes a bid deal out of it. But I sure as hell care about our standing in the world and the destruction of this country, and that's exactly what Trump and Musk are doing. Our allies have become our enemies and our enemies are now Trump's butt buddies. Trump, Vance and Musk are loving the far right extremist parties, those similar to the Nazis. And eventually its going to come back to haunt this country, Putin and the other far right wing extremists will play Trump like a violin.

I mostly agree with you on #1 and #2 although #1 is probably illegal based on current asylum law.

#3, who cares about preliminary talks? Trump promised to end the war on day 1 or before he even took office, instead he has thrown Ukraine right under the bus. Trump will allow Putin to go unpunished for his invasion of Ukraine and he will probably end sanctions against the Russians, and Ukraine will have fought its butt off for nothing. Poland better be ready.

#4, I guess you agree with cutting cancer research and research on Alzheimer's, and cutting funds to combat the Bird Flu? I guess you agree on cutting funds for food safety? I guess you agree on cutting funds to the FAA for air safety? How about nuclear safety, Musk fired some nuclear safety employees and now is trying to hire them back? You okay with firing those employees?

You okay with firing 6000+ IRS employees, even though its been shown that every IRS employee hired results in thousands of tax revenue collected over and above the employee's salary? And those hired to audit extremely high income individuals result in large additional tax revenues because high net worth individuals tend to cheat on their taxes. Surprise, I guess the billionaires don't have enough money so they cheat. I'm sure Trump and Musk are thrilled with the IRS employee reduction, they can really cheat on their taxes now.

USAID provided goodwill around the globe and with the absence of the US, China will move right in. China has always wanted a naval port on the western coast of Africa, and Trump and Musk are saying have at it. And to hell with the farmers and other contractors who have signed contracts with USAID, why should the government honor those contracts? Trump never has honored contracts during his lifetime. He has cheated many contractors with whom he had binding contracts with out of their money. The US farmers and others can join the Trump screwed me on our contract club.

I submit all these actions move us backward as a country.

Haste makes waste. Yes, agree some cuts will prove ill advised, but believe will be corrected based on further data. Musk admits this openly. "Fat v muscle" common challenge in any downsizing endeavor, private or public.

Nevertheless, applaud the effort to carve away the fat, and there is plenty. The alternative is to be Biden, do nothing, while we teeter toward bankruptcy.

Many have fallen victim to the DT bait, the left the media, and even here. He has ripped off the bandaid, after many predecessors campaigned to do the same but didn’t have the balls to do so after elected. Mistakes made, absolutely; corrections made, absolutely. He has and will win every challenge, in court or otherwise to accomplish what he believes is best for the country. With pleasure I will enjoy the Maine governor crumble trying to support men in women’s sport. Much better than SNL.

I realize much of Trump's "mandate" (solid Electoral College win with a marginal popular vote win) evolves from anti-woke backlash but the majority of his hires are affirmative action hires based solely upon a single attribute - fealty to Trump.

Accurate. There's never been a less qualified cabinet than this one, and it's not close at all. The irony of the "DEI hires are bad" mantra compared to the slop he has put in leadership roles is comical.

Do you applaud the effort to carve away fat when most or all of the savings will go to tax reductions for the extremely wealthy? And maybe the US can up its average daily payments to Musk companies to $10 million a day.
