The coach and the team have quit

Honestly hard to imagine you guys doing well next year no matter who coaches. Cupboard seems bare. Got any monster recruits coming in?
I agree but with out Mooney, we’d have some hope there I would be a light at the end of the tunnel. And we could make this a rivalry again

It will be a breath of fresh air to have a new coaching staff and a new cycle of players, even if we lose a lot of games next year.

We’ve got our next lead guard sitting on the bench right now as a redshirt.

How are you going to feel when he transfers to VCU?

Why don't you just go back to your gloatfest and let the grownups in the room figure it out.

He could’ve gone there but didn’t. And at this point, VCU doesn’t really matter to us, we need to get our house right, so who cares.
Mooney has sucked the life out of those little nitpicks. We gotta get our stuff straight first.

When CM mercifully finally departs UR, hopefully by April (I can see the press release now: "The University of Richmond and Chris Mooney, the winningest coach in school history, have mutually agreed that...") it will be mildly humorous to see where he eventually ends up. Clearly not a higher conference and doubtful even a lateral move based on his resume. Would Patriot or CAA even have an interest since they are typically more focused on up and comers? Pitino was damaged goods for other reasons but even with his pedigree had to go way down to the MAAC. Maybe Alma Mater Princeton to save face, but can't even see them being interested and at 18-5 they're not looking.

Feed me the Duncan McLean/Mark McGonigal Backcourt version 2.0. Don't care if we go 5-25 next year. We might even if we do nothing.

If we hire the right coach, we'll be on a great trajectory in no time.

Serious question for you as a vcu fan? Do you guys somewhat fear what would happen if we got rid of Mooney because you know we might actually become a challenger? My guess would be no because y’all know that no matter who our coach is the attitude for the whole university is just to compete, not actually try to win anything.
The A10 needs Richmond to be an awesome ball club. In my opinion, it’s going to take a huge commitment by the University to right the ship. It starts with the coaches and a fresh approach. The AD has to be committed to rebuilding the program from top to bottom. We had several terrific conversations last night with Spider fans before the game (I saw no abuse or animosity toward any spider fan don’t believe the Ulla types) and it was apparent you have strong support in the fan base. I and other Ram supporters have respect for the Spider players but from what I see, player development is non existent. We had 3 freshman and one sophomore on the court last night - why not play the younger Richmond guys? There is no fear of a stronger Richmond team in the future. The fear is that Richmond will fall in that mid pack range and be removed from being relevant in the league.

I'm sure job security Mooney is selling the promise of some transfers, the next KA (Nelson), some promising red shirt freshman, Burton, Dji and Walz as a promising group. And it would be with a new coach imo. He is probably talking down the super seniors saying it was their fault, they came back unmotivated, etc. Hopefully jaba wakes up and does something.

We are already mid-pack and not relevant. Ever since the A-10 lost all the good teams and added VCU, this conference makes me sick to my stomach.

I see the A-10 groupings as:

Dayton & VCU - Consistent, resilient

Davidson, SLU, SBU, URI - Good more often than not with Davidson leading this group

GW, SJU - Large Variation (Way up, Way down)

GMU, UMass, LaSalle, Duquesne, Fordham - Average at best with GMU leading this group

So where have we been? Where can we reasonably expect to be?

I feel we should be above the middle of the second group, but that the administration overweighs our better than average performance against average teams but underweighs our under performance against much better and much worse teams.

We beat good teams just often enough to give hope, and lose to bad teams just often enough to be damaging.

Don’t forget Loyola Chicago is coming next year and would at a minimum be in the top of your second group.

We’ve heard so often the upsides of having a veteran team. It’s starting to feel like the downside is that the fire and enthusiasm wanes over time. You’re right, for the most part I haven’t seen it all year. The most fire I’ve seen is from Wilson and Randolph

If the head coach had more "fire" he would do something like bench all the starters when the game is going so badly as in the second half at VCU and put in five different players including the very enthusiastc walkons. Maybe the point differential loss is worse but a loss is a loss and at least it would get some players' attention. No reason for the same players to stay on the court when we are being throttled. The philosphy presented now is I'll stick with what we are doing and somehow things will change. That is naive and insane!

Midnight madness game at JMU. Tarrant pulled all the starters when we were getting destroyed. Probably mid point or a bit later of the second half. Then, with a minute or so to go in the game, he put them all back in to finish that mess. A friend of mine that went to JMU told me then he hoped they didn’t have to play us in the CAA tournament. We beat them in the finals that year. Tarrant was toughness!!

The only monster recruit we need is a lucid minded, non necktie wearing individual who can make actual adjustments.

But what would that do to our SRS rating?

I was at that midnight madness game unfortunately.

Then I was also at the revenge game in the CAA tourney. Post game I walked by and picked up Lefty Driesell's notebook haha.

If I recall, after that game myself and friends watching the game were milling around the court and Steve Hood, JMU star, came over and congratulated us and said we were good fans. Class act, never forgot that. He must not have heard exactly what we were yelling:).

Did the team quit at 8-22? Or when Golden had a heart attack? Or when Covid shut their seasons down? No. Nor will this team quit on Coach Mooney now.
You forgot about Cedrick Lindsay's knees, the slippery spot on the floor in Brooklyn, the lousy officials and technical fouls against Charlotte, Derrick Williams' offcourt "challenges", 3 covid pauses, the blizzard at St Bonaventure on the bus....
