Secret Scrimmage vs ECU 90-90

Maybe needs it own thread - but what has gone wrong this year. I will admit - I had some excitement about this team entering the season. I thought we had a decent core coming back led by DLO, and then support by Roche, Tyne, and Walz. And I thought the addition of GW3, Neskovic, Beagle, and Apostolos - would produce at least 1 if not 2 high impact producers to support DLO. But it just had not happened. We have not seen GW3 and Apostolos, coming from UCONN, has not lived up to expectations I had. But this is a gamble in taking transfers, especially at the higher level - who may not have played - but were well touted/recruited out of HS - they might not live up to that original rating or expectation. Just seems like to me we may have struck out on all of them at the same time. And struck out might be too harsh - Beagle and Neskovic are okay, but we needed more than okay from the portal this year to keep up - and just seems we are not getting it as of now.

How about just 5 from 30%?

Our top 5 volume 3 guys are at 49%, 28%, 24%, 23%, and 22%. Yikes!!!!!!!!
I agree. But looking at the scrimmages, it appeared we had lots of shooters…

And I think if you only count D1, that 49% may be 40.7%

Counting only our 5 high volume guys, only Roche and Dusan are better if you take away D2 games.

Hunt was 1-5 from 3 against D2 teams.
Tyne 2-10.
Dusan 3-7.
AP 0-8.
Roche 9-14.

what’s the scouting process for portal guys who have minimal D1 game minutes? Are coaches basically looking at footage of them from high school and whatever nominal tape there is of them at their current school?

Just trying to figure out how much is they are mid-assessed versus unable to assess these guys. It seems weird that they’d mis-assess this many guys at once.

Russ said they will also speak to a coach of the player as a minimum.

They have to rely on HS tapes if the kid only plays garbage time. What else can you do? Coaches are not likely releasing practice footage, just in case they ever play us at anytime. And relying on coaches to give assessments? They will always be complimentary of the kid. I think I read Hurley recommended UR to Apostolos because he was a big guy who could shoot and thought he would fit our system well. But remember - the faster those kids transfer (at least the ones they don't want) - the faster they can replace them. So it benefits the coach to give a good review of a departing player.

not sure even UConn saw HS tape on AP.
if it's out there, it's not on the internet.

Correct. Not a lot out there. Hurley never saw him play in person. Sometimes a 13th scholarship is just a body for practice, so maybe Hurley was thinking that.

I'm guessing someone he trusts said this kid has a lot of potential. and he might be right.

Congrats to Spider23 who somehow gleaned enough information out of a stat sheet of a game--- that he didn't watch, doesn't know anyone who did and that doesn't count---to come up with 11 posts in a little over 8 hours. critiquing our offense, defense, scouting ,etc.
And guess what lover of mooniocrity, I've been watching Richmond hoops for 35 years and if it smells like a Mooney, quacks like a Mooney, walks like a Mooney, plays soft like a Mooney. It probably is. But you tell us what to glean from watching this team??
