Schedule changes

This is a risk vs. reward situation with this game. The risk of playing is someone can get injured or we catch another COVID pause as a result. Yes - these are risks in any game, but in a game that will count for nothing - it is probably more. And of course - there is the risk of losing the game, but I consider this extremely low.

The reward - a tune up before VCU so that maybe our guys are in better position to win that game.

In terms of COVID though and our 3 pauses - since this our 3rd time around and I have to imagine we had more than 1 player positive this last time for such a long pause - are we at a point yet where maybe most of the players have had it, so maybe they will be cleared for the rest of the season. Meaning - can we really get another pause if most guys have had it?

karen there is risk reward in everything they do. running sprints, lifting weights, intrasquad scrimmage. Sherod blew his knew out practice.

I don’t think Mooney ever wants to play St Mary’s ever again after the ncaa tournament game. It’s sad because that St Mary’s is really who UR has the ability to be but no...
Agree, St Mary's is a little down this year, but there are a pretty large group of mid majors we could aspire to, and St. Mary's is definitely one.
NCAA appearances:
2010
2012
2013
2017
2019

Wouldn’t playing a an inter squad be equivalent to playing a DIII team?
I had this same thought. Of course, the usual excuse is that the scout team knows the plays and tendencies etc. But in this case, it definitely would be less risky to play a full regulation inter-squad game.

The guys in the quarantine have not been able to do ANYTHING for 14 days.
So the instructions to players were to lay in bed and eat bon bons all day. Give me a break. Other teams like Villanova were out for a longer period of time and were able to play their normally scheduled next game. I am sure there are ways to get work in. It just takes effort.

In a season where we are going to be fighting tooth and nail just to get the damn games played period I think it is an embarrassment that we are using this available date for a game to play a D3 school.
Agreed. It is weak. If this isn’t a sign of total desperation, I don’t know what is.

On top of all that, I find it very hard to believe that the team will be “into” playing this game. I would expect to see a marginal amount of effort. It is simple human nature against an inferior opponent. Then there is the question of how much difference can one “tune up” game make. In an earlier post, I cited the results of such DIII games at the beginning of the previous two seasons, which definitely do not show any true benefits.

Good luck Spiders. I will listen to the game out of pure curiosity.

The most important thing for the regatta is that we need a win. Losing games doesn’t help us. If a D3 game is what we need, fine.

My annoyance is purely that we broke a long silence to say “we’re scheduling the best games we can” and then have a D3 game. The communication “strategy” is what kills me. Just be transparent, we’re looking for wins.

If by "St. Mary's" you actually mean "Butler", then you are dead on.

no, SMC defeated VCU in an NCAA tournament game. That is what I am talking about. Although as a card carrying Mooneyphile you probably couldn't care less about silly things like March Madness appearances and winning big games over our rivals.

Makes sense, since y’all can’t keep your own team from infection, so you might as well prevent another A10 team from participating in the NCAA Tournament. Good plan! You guys really do have superior academics😄 And sense you are a nazi moderator I’m sure I’ll be banned for having a contrarian view. 3, 2, 1...,,
Man I wish UR would take athletics a little more seriously. This rivalry could be a lot more fun if they did. It’s hard to even hate y’all so much because I respect the commitment to basketball success that is backed by the whole university. I think most people on here thought vcu would be the program that wouldn’t take cOViD seriously and have to miss a bunch of time as a result because of the stereotypes most people think of when they think of vcu. UR shows once again that they are very far behind vcu in all aspects of running a legitimate basketball program.

Please point me to the ""final four tournament win" that St. Mary's has over VCU. I'll wait.

And you have me pegged wrong. I'd actually support a coaching change, for much the same reason that in soccer they recommend not having the same coach for more than one or two world cup cycles. The message gets stale.

I just seem like a Mooneyphile by comparison, because I don't write "it's Mooney's fault", "I guess we better get the auto-bid", and "looks like the #bestclassever forgot to get off the bus!" every time someone misses a jump shot.

RE: "best games possible" He was referring to the open dates and A10 games.

The problem with that is that every other A10 team already was scheduled to play either tonight or tomorrow. Dayton-St. Joe's is the only one that's not happening, but I think that wasn't announced until right around the same time we announced the St. Mary's game. So realistically we would have had no one in the A10 to play.

Perhaps. But scheduling changes have been made in past by A10 and they are going to be made down the stretch here by A10. Have to be fluid on scheduling we've heard that all along. Things can be moved around. Had we pushed for it maybe something gets rearranged. Maybe not but moot point bc we didn't push for it. And that's fine but no need to sell us. Like Mooney trying to sell us that he doesn't know what spooked SLU leaving. We want the best possible opponents...when it is absolutely convenient for us even tho we're the ones who have had 3 covid pauses.

I said there is a risk everytime they take the court, just like in any other game. But if they are going to take the risk - I would rather it be in a game that counts and matters. I don't want anyone to get injured or get COVID, but if I had to choose - I would rather it be in a game that matters - like VCU or another D1 game that hits our resume, rather than a glorified scrimmage mid-season.

I haven't heard of our league or any other ones cancelling a regularly scheduled game where both teams were cleared to play in order to schedule a game between one of those teams and another team. Has that happened?

anything else I can help you google?

Thank you for proving my point.

That game did not occur in the final four. It occurred in the first round of the tournament. You wrote, in post #84 above, "they have one feather in their cap that we would especially like to have, a Final Four tournament win over VCU."

I bolded the important part, since you seem to be pretty slow on the uptake. If you said "a tournament win", I would not have replied, because that would have been a correct statement. But you didn't say that. You said a FINAL FOUR tournament win. And then you attempted to lob an insult about me somehow only caring about Chris Mooney and that I "couldn't care less about silly things like March Madness appearances" because I can tell the difference between the first round of the tournament and the Final Four.

So maybe it is you that couldn't care less about silly things like March Madness, since the distinction between a first round game and a final four game seems to be beyond your comprehension.

"Final Four Tournament" is the entire tournament you moron and you ****ing knew that. Guarantee you I have attended more NCAA tournament games than you have and then you try to sit there and lecture me on stupid semantics like this. That's rich.

Enjoy the last bit of attention you will get from me sweetheart.

Yeah-the difference between Saint Mary’s college of Maryland, which is the Division III team y’all are scrimmaging, and the Division I Saint Mary’s College of California, which is the actual team that beat VCU in the NCAA tournament you cite. But what do I know? I graduated from a public university.

so when you attend a 1st round game, do you claim to have been to the Final Four?

no, the tournament is not referred to as the "Final Four Tournament".
Ever.

nice try Karen.

if you go back to my initial post that sent all the glue sniffers such as yourself into an uproar you will see that I was replying to someone that was talking about Saint Mary's College. I'd be willing to have a jury of our peers decide this one. I'll put up a vote. The person who wins gets exactly one post to just go off on the other, and the person who loses may only like the post and may not reply, and then we virtually shake hands and move on. Agree?
